Pollock and Rudolph dropped as Smith replaces injured Chanderpaul
There will be two major changes to the South African squad after their victory in the second test match. Firstly, Jacques Rudolph has been replaced by Hashim Amla after failing to convert two starts into scores. More controversially, Shaun Pollock has also been ommited in favour of Dale Steyn who is looking an impressive prospect with 71 wickets in 15 tests. Pollock said he was disappointed at being left out of the side but admitted he was not at his best with only 3 wickets so far in the series
In other news, Devon Smith has been named as the man to replace Chivnarine Chanderpaul, who is suffering from a knee ligament injury suffered in the field.
Hello and welcome to the third and final test in this series between South Africa and the West Indies. It's a glorious day here in Port Elizabeth and the forecast looks fine for the entire match.
There have been changes for both sides since the second test: the injured Chanderpaul is replaced by Devon Smith and Rufolph and Pollock have been dropped in favour of Hashim Amla and Dale Steyn. These two emerging players will be looking to put their mark on the match to secure a test spot in the future.
When we looked at the pitch a little earlier we saw it was very dry with a lot of cracks, this will cause unpredictable bounce and seam and make things difficult for the batsmen. The overhead conditions say bat but as it's likely to be like this for the next five days the best decision upon winning the toss would be to stick the opposing team in.
Let's go down there now for the crucial toss.
Graeme Smith calls HEADS and it's... TAILS.
Ramnaresh Sarwan chooses to field first.
There you have it, Sarwan won the toss and chose to put the South Africans in. Looking at the pitch conditions this looks like a good decision however early wickets will be needed to put the formidable South African batting lineup under pressure.
The players make their way out for the first session of play in this final test match. South African opener and captain Graeme Smith is under pressure to score runs having not made a big score so far in the series. De Villiers' morale will be high after his 230 in the last match but things will be much harder on this bowler-friendly pitch.
Looking to take advantage of the pitch will be opening bowlers Jerome Taylor and Corey Collymore. Neither have been outstanding so far in the series.
We're into the seventh over when the unpredictable seam of the pitch shows. Taylor bowls back of a length and forces the nick from De Villiers, Ramdin takes a smart catch to send him on his way.
Herschelle Gibbs is the new man out and has been on relatively good form so far with two fifties.
He cannot continue this form when he too hits a fine edge through to the keeper, this time off the bowling of Collymore. The West Indies are really taking advantage of the conditions here.
Jacques Kallis needs to stay out there and help rebuild this South African innings.
Smith wont be staying out there with him however. His run-drought continues as he fails to pick the slower ball and hits it straight back to Taylor.
Ashwell Prince is another who has been on fine form this tour. It's imperative he continues it to keep South Africa in it.
He has just two on the board however when Taylor fires in a quick yorker and pins him in front. The umpire gives him LBW and South Africa's crisis deepens even further.
I'm sure when new addition Hashim Amla woke up this morning he did not expect to be batting this early in the day!
Collapsing must be contagious and South Africa have obviously caught it from the West Indies as Kallis falls next, the unpredictable bounce surprises him and he gets hit on the pads. The umpire thinks for what seems like an age before finally giving him out.
He has a right to feel hard done by as the ball seems to be going over the top of the stumps! This is the second controversial LBW decision Kallis has had go against him in the series.
Can Mark Boucher get South Africa out of this mess and form a partnership with Amla to get them to a respectable total?
Daren Powell is brought on to bowl just before lunch.
Amla and Boucher have just begun to rebuild this shambles of an innings when luch is called. 5 wickets have fallen and for the first time all tour West Indies are on top.
Jerome Taylor was on fire this morning and picked up 4 of the 5 wickets that fell, a great effort by him.
Third Test: Lunch, Day One South Africa: 82/5
Amla 24 (35)
Boucher 13 (32)
Last Wicket: Kallis 12 LBW Taylor
