Why Bowlers Can't Bat

I want to know what is so special that good bowlers cannot bat. With the exception of Waqar Younis Wasim Ahkram, Pollock, Kallis, Vaas, Drakes and Lee...why? It can't be that they spend more time practicing bowling.

Examples: Warne, Walsh, Dillon, Murali...

put your ideas and look at this table

I think most bowlers give priority to practice bowling tactics rather than batting

It doesn't matter how many hours training you put it, it all comes down to your actual batting talent. They are in the team because the are gifted bowlers and even if they spent hours in batting practice, i doubt this would make them international standard batsmen.

I think the best lower order batsmen in the world are Shaun Pollock and Abdul Razzaq, they are both very powerful batsmen when they need to be and are very solid and dependable number 7's - other than there's Gilchrist at number 7 for Aus, but hes not a bowler though!

Heath Streak's always good for some runs, and Andy Bichel (with Bevan) saved Australia from what should have been defeats in the world cup against England and New Zealand. And when you consider John Davidson normally bats at number 9, 10, or 11 for South Australia and plays as a bowler, his fasted world cup century and his follow up fifty were absolutely sensational. What a gun. I'd be very suprised if South Australia didn't give him a bit more time in the middle in the season coming.

Heath Streak? no, maybe in the one day game but not in tests, he's pretty useless cos he just cant help but attempt to smack everything - I loved the way he ran himself out against England ( :D ). Shaun Pollock is definitely the boy, before him I would have said Wasim Akram without doubt. Andy Bichel can play but he is yet to show a great deal of consisitence at test level with his bat. I was impressed with Omari Banks during the Australia tour, shame he didnt get another game cos he did quite well I thought  I can never understand these West Indian selectors, I always thought good performances are rewarded, not the other way around  Banks definitely plays some nice pre-meditated shots and hopefully the West Indians will nuture his potential, it would be a waste to throw it away.

Dude, what are you talking about? He played for the whole Sri Lankan series, ODI and test. In the rain-affected first test against Sri Lanka he scored 50* took 1/74 and 0/28 (West Indies batted only once). In the low-scoring second match he took 2/31 and 0/6 and scored only 2. But that was a low scoring match and the scores were

1)Sri Lanka - 208 all out
2)West Indies - 191 all out
3)Sri Lanka (17 ahead @ start) - 194 all out
4)West Indies (target: 212) - 213/3

So I really must say that he is unlucky with the ball. Although he bowls very well the fielders fail to support him. In his first innings in test cricket he got 3-204. If the fielders supported him he would have gotten maybe 6-70odd. I think he and Murali need to swap skills. Murali should teach him the ducler or whatever they call it and Banks should teach Murali to bat LOL :D

Expecting bowlers to bat is about as useful as expecting batsmen to bowl well... some can chip in now and then, but most have buckley's. Next you'll be asking why Langer's not taking wickets.... The fact is, that during cricket at such a high level you need to be naturally talented as a batsmen to be able to score runs of balls coming down at 140km/h at razor sharp accuracy.

And by the way, Streak has 8 test fifties and averages 20, and 8 ODI fifties at 25. Not bad for someone you carries along the whole bowling attack, and has the weight of the captancy. And his good knocks seem to come at times of pressure. The reason i rate Bichel so highly is because his batting during the world cup saved them completely in two games. If he got out cheaply, then Australia would have been bowled out for under 150 against both England and New Zealand which would have cause the team inevidable defeat. Wow, sure some bowlers can get centuries on dead pitches in a game in which a draw is inevidable (think Mushtaq, and nearly Warne), but if you can support a batsmen at the other end and allow him to play his strokes, then that is most important. If you can hang around for 80 balls and only get 15 runs this allows the good batsmen at the other end to score another 50 or so, which is of much more use then you getting a run a ball thirty and getting out, leaving him stranded.

Kallis is the master.
Test Batsman ranked #6 with an average of 50.40.
Test Bowler ranked #10 with an average of 28.61.
ODI Bowler ranked # with an average of
ODI Batsman ranked #18 with an average of 43.22 (as at June 22nd)

I think You are being a bit unfair on Warne as well sure he has alot of ducks but he is quite a good low order batsman.

Infact Warne holds the record for most amount of FC and Test runs without a 100. Instead he has that bloody 99.

Yeah, that was funny. Out slogging on 99.

The answer as to why bowlers can't bat is because if they could they would be allrounders, not bowlers. :D

<_< That's a real corny and corky answer. Keep it serious please.

(mod edit :zimrahil: :what do you mean by corky and corny?)

I am a fast bowler myself, and i can bat a bit.
my bowling ave is 8.4 and batting is 40 something.
I concentrate a lot more on my bowling and hardly ever practice batting but when i go out there i still make runs, why can't the professionals?

are you referring to the Bangladesh as professionals   :karind:
