Slumdog Millionaire

Children Actors still living in the slums of Mumbai. WTF.

If it was Bollywood then I'm quite interested in what other movies India have to offer.

It wasn't Bollywood but there are some excellent movies made there that I'm sure beat the pants off that one. I would recommend Deepa Mehta's elements trilogy; Fire, Water, and Earth.

Not sure this film was worth the 8 awards it received recently. Great film, no doubt about it, but it wasn't 8-Academy Awards great. I think it prospered from the dire competition that it was up against.

The score, however, was superb. A.R. Rahman was well deserving of the couple of gongs he picked up for that masterpiece.

Was this a Hollywood or Bollywood made film? If it was Bollywood then I'm quite interested in what other movies India have to offer.

Its a mixture. Bollywood has seen many of such films before.

If you are keen on Bollywood, watch the right movies. For a start, check out the movies that 'jkartik' has posted in this thread (those are all bollywood films). I am sure you might start loving Bollywood after watching most of them.

That is a Movie and shows the reality of India nothing else.

Partly true. I saw the film yesterday. But it is way too overrated. Now let me be straightforward- Dev Patel was terrible in the film- at least I think so. A silly blank expression in his face always, be it fighting his brother or winning 2 crore rupees. So was Freida Pinto- quite overrated. The film really didn't deserve eight Oscars. It was "Luck by Chance" :p In my eyes the best pic of 08 was "The Dark Knight". And anyway, Slumdog partly portrays the reality of India. But at times it goes way beyond the true reality. Ok, there are numerous slums in India. But their condition is not this poor. They are at least better than what was shown in the film. And slums are not the only thing in India- there are numerous twenty -storeyed buildings, highrise offices- everything you'll find in the US is in India. That is why India has the third largest economy of the world. If you don't believe me just come to Mumbai and see for yourselves- the same city shown in SM. It's as good as New York or London. It's just that there are quite a few slums and everything there- but if I leave out the slums? The brighter side of India? Why only highlight the Indian slums? Britain, US - they all had slums in the last two centuries. It's that they developed and got rid of the slums. And we are developing, why so pessimistic about us? I'm saying again slums are not the only thing which India has. Judging India by seeing a film will not be right. I say, you guys come here and see for yourselves.

Just have to put it out there that this kind of thing is present in every country. There are Ghetto's here that are absolutely horrible in the US. Probably some in the UK and England too. India has slums.

It's hard to manage a population of 1 billion people. It's quite remarkable really that we've got 82% or what not above the poverty rate, remember thats like 820 million people. But if you look at the other side of the coin, it's 180 under the line, which is like 2/3rd the population of the US.

And its not like the slums can just be moved, either. There are literally millions of people there and from what i've heard 2000 people moving in from villages every day. They all want a shot at Mumbai. It's a great city, and it has its contrasts.

Bit of a sleep deprived post, hope it makes sense.

But people from countries such as Australia or even England who live in such good conditions, it just doesnt give a good impression. Thats why i said this film will shoot India in the foot for tourism.

Well I am going to see Slumdog tomorrow, and I will write a nice review of it, depending on how good it is. Going in with an open mind though :)

Personally I'm stumped at the reception the music score has received abroad. It's a good score, but still. If this is the reaction to this score I wonder what happens when you listen to some of Rahman's more accomplished compositions.

Slumdog was probably over-rated, but isnt that usually the case with Oscar winning movies? But to say the Dark Knight is better is pushing it a bit too far. I did not like the latter at all and do not even reckon it to be the best in its series.

I do not think that by showing just the slums part of Mumbai is by any means pessimistic or negative? No one wants to know about the rich and the skyscrapers. Certainly not the western audience who have enough of it. But the life in the sums is something new for them. And being from Mumbai myself (spent 17 years of my life there), I know exactly well how many slums there are in the city. But they are a part of the what is overall an amazing city. I am living in Dubai right now, which might not have any slums, but I still reckon Mumbai to be a better city. I miss the roadside Vada Pav, Chaat and Golas.
