Preliminary squad: Graeme Smith, Hashim Amla, Jacques Kallis, AB de Villiers, Alviro Peterson, Loots Bosman, Jacques Rudolph, Morne van Wyk, Jonathan Vandiar, JP Duminy, David Miller, Colin Ingram, Albie Morkel, Robin Peterson, Mark Boucher, Thami Tsolekile, Faf du Plessis, Dean Elgar, Heino Kuhn, Morne Morkel, Dale Steyn, Wayne Parnell, Lonwabo Tsotsobe, Johan Botha, Ryan McLaren, Charl Langeveldt, Rusty Theron, Ethy Mbhalati, Roelef van der Merwe, Johan van der Wath

South Africa as usual look the strongest team in any world event but then as usual crash out in either the semi's or finals. Will the bunch chosen here change this? I'm thinking that the final squad will look something like this, although Rudolph will be a good batsman I dont think there's space for him.

1. Graeme Smith (c)
2. Hashim Amla
3. Jacques Kallis
4. AB de Villiers (wk maybe?)
5. Colin Ingram
6. JP Duminy
7. Albie Morkel
8. Johan Botha
9. Dale Steyn
10. Morne Morkel
11. Wayne Parnell

12. Charl Langeveldt
13. Roelof van der Merwe
14. Mark Boucher
15. Rusty Theron

They might end up not taking Boucher at all, the South Africa-India series will be the telling point for fringe players such as Miller & Tsotsobe who would be unlucky to miss out if they do.

Does anyone know why Jandre Coetzee has never played for SA? His stats suggest he's well worth a try (as a bowler) - in all forms.

I'm guessing his lack of pace, but not entirely sure.

Tsotsobe has to be in the side, he is killing it. Every game he is in the wickets and when hes on he grabs you 4 wickets.

I was reading about Faf du Plessis, he is very consistent with the bat, good strike rate and bowls leggies. If their latest squad is anything to go by then Albie has been ditched.

idk about tsotsobe, he'll have to perform throughout this series otherwise i dont think he'll make the cut.

And why has albie been ditched :facepalm, he hasn't been out of form and he is used to playing in indian conditions so i hope he does get a game in the series. with faf du plessis his leg spins are pretty much part-time so he'll get smashed by any decent batsman at the world cup. so he isn't a suitable replacement for morkel.

I'm sure he'll be in there, from your 15 he would go in over Langeveldt at the very least.

His part timers will be handy if SA need them. But the main reason hes in the team is his batting which reads 99 matches, average of 44 at a strike rate of 91. Morkel has been very average, if you think Afridi was inconsistent then Morkel takes the cake.

I'd call South Africa my favourites for winning the world cup (unless they choke in the semis).

If we scrutinise their main batsmen's averages and bowlers' strike-rates, i.e.

Batting averages

Graeme Smith - 39.94
Amla - 59.27
de Villers - 45.4
Duminy - 40.8
Kallis - 45.8

I could also add Ingram here, but for his inexperience, I won't.

Bowling strike-rates

Steyn - 34.2
Tsotsobe - 27.6
Morkel - 31.6
Parnell - 26.9

A formidable attack there, and Amla can well surely come back as the man of the series.

i see that morkel & langeveldt aren't even in the india series squad so you're probably right, neither will make the cut. :(

Langeveldt has been pushed out of the scheme of things by Razzaq's belligerent innings in UAE. I don't see him play for South Africa again. They have a very potent pace bowling attack in any case. South Africa have to be one of the semifinalist along with Sri Lanka and India. How they handle the pressure remains to bee seen? They badly need the chokers tag off their back.

He has been too inconsistent with both bat and ball for SA and the titans.

Your squad has a lot of errors. This will be the squad barring any injuries, only question mark is maybe rusty theron in ahead of robin peterson but then you have qouta problems so its unlikely.

1.Smith
2.Amla
3.Kallis
4.AB(wicket keepr)
5.JP
6.Ingram
7.Miller
8.Faf Du plessis
9.Botha
10.Parnell
11.Steyn
12.M.Morkel
13.Tsotsobe
14.Peterson
15.Tahir

I believe the selectors will then go with 1 of these 3 variations for the playing 11.

1.Smith
2.Amla
3.Kallis
4.AB
5.JP
6.Miller/Ingram/Faf
7.Botha
8.Parnell
9.Steyn
10.Morkel/Tsotsobe
11.Tahir

or

1.Smith
2.Amla
3.Kallis
4.AB
5.JP
6.Ingram
7.Miller/Faf
8.Botha
9.Parnell
10.Steyn
11.Tahir

or

1.Smith
2.Amla
3.Kallis
4.AB
5.JP
6.Ingram/Miller/Faf
7.Botha
8.Parnell
9.Steyn
10.Morkel
11.Tsotsobe

The top 5 are very solid and steyn and botha are consistent performers. Questions mark areas are who gets the number 6 spot and whether morkel and tsotsobe can cope on india pitches and whether tahir can adjust to international level.

There is also the death bowling with only parnell who I would back each and every time, the others are quite inconsistent.

But I think we definitly have a chance.

according to cricinfo imran tahir isn't in the 30 man prelim squad so he cant be selected for the world cup, i rather see him there though him and botha would make great partners.

and the quota system was removed wasn't it?

1.Smith
2.Amla
3.Kallis
4.AB
5.JP
6.Ingram/Miller/Faf
7.Botha
8.Parnell
9.Steyn
10.Morkel
11.Tsotsobe

this combination would either work really well or fail really bad, the top 5 are really good so they can get you off to a flyer but if they fail then the lower order batsmen aren't that good just as yet and they could be in trouble.

Tahir wasn't in the original 30 that was selected because he hadn't gotten his SA qualification yet. He was added and janathan vandiar withdrawn last week.

Officially the qouta system was removed but CSA still have their targets. It basicly comes down to the same thing...

Tahir added to preliminary World Cup squad

NASHUA DOLPHINS leg spinner Imran Tahir has been called up to the Proteas’ preliminary squad of 30 for the ICC Cricket World Cup in the place of bizhub Highveld Lions batsman Jonathan Vandiar.

“We feel that we need to widen our bowling options,” commented Cricket South Africa (CSA) selection convener Andrew Hudson. “I have discussed the matter with Jonathan and I would like to express my gratitude to him for withdrawing gracefully. He knows he is very much part of our plans going forward.”

Yeah the side isn't ideally balanced but we either take a risk by playing the extra bowler or the extra batsman. On the type of wickets the wc will be played on I would rather go the extra bowler. Even with that I feel that botha and parnell can do a decent job.

In today's sunday times Andrew hudson said the side that played last night will all go 100% to the world. He said there are 4 spots up for grabs the extra spinner, reserve keeper, seamer and extra batsmen. Who they take I think will depend a lot on whether they see kallis as being able to fill the extra seamer role, I think they do. In that case they will take him and faf. If they think they need a genuine seamer they will take rusty and leave faf at home. I think tahir has the spinning slot.

So this is the squad we have so for.

The reserve keeper should be morne van wyk but with the targets they will take thami tsolekeli. Don't be surprised if robin peterson goes as well in place of faf to get closer to that 7 players of color mark.

What will be interesting is how they classify tahir now that he is a SA citizen. Previously he was classified as a "white" player, absolutely hilarious if that's still the case with amla being "colored".

Technicaly they actually want 7 "coloured" players. Lets see if they can achieve that or whether will accept slightly less. Such a frustrating situation.:mad
