India tour of Sri Lanka - July/Sept 2017

Just noticed that vijay is not in the squad. What's his injury ?
I think it is the same injury due to which he missed the whole IPL season. He hasn't fully recovered from that yet.

@asprin sticky this and unsticky the WI-Ind one please[DOUBLEPOST=1501015513][/DOUBLEPOST]And unsticky Zim-SL as well

Holy! 190 for Dhawan? Well atleast he will settle the debate for the third opener. Abhinav Mukund has been really terrible. He is another one of those 'I love domestic attacks, but I tremble when I hit international cricket'. The Mukund experiment has to be scrapped for good. Rahul and Vijay should be the frontline openers. Dhawan as backup for now.

Good innings from Pujara too. Grinded SL bowlers along with Dhawan. A 550+ here should do it for India, I hope.

New stupid update from Cricinfo meant that I completed forgot about Sri Lanka game.

Damn good start from India - especially Dhawan. I feel a 600+ score and an innings victory is on the card. The bowl is starting to grip according to the commentary and India have the spinners to rattle the weak Sri Lankan line-up.

Typically Dhawan, he has made a score against a worthless attack!
Kohli has dropped Vijay before. I wouldn't be surprised if it's done again. Dhawan will be a sitting duck in SA. Vijay is much more solid.

It would be utterly stupid of Kohli (well he gets all blame from here on since he had his way with coach selection, citing that the captain is the ultimate boss) if Vijay and Rahul do not walk back into the XI once they recover from their respective illness (injury for Vijay; fever for Rahul). Dhawan at best is the third backup opener and way better than Abhinav Mukund, who is a disaster.

Vijay is solid and should play as the frontline opener overseas. Rahul also promises similar solidity with his technique.

Would be totally foolish to sit Vijay out of tours like SA. He is one opener who has scored runs in SA, NZ, England and Australia. If we drop him for Dhawan, it would be foolish.

Agreed, Dhawan only makes runs aganist attacks like the Windies and SL, but when playing top class teams, such as Australia or England, he's a sitting duck. He's going to eventually lose form at some point, that's just how he is. I've got a feeling Kohli will still play Dhawan regardless if Vijay makes it back.

India should aim for 550+ at this point. It's espacially a good time for Pandya to come in and show his talent and what's has created so much hype about him. I personally didn't agree with him playing Test cricket just yet, becuase there seems to be a recklessness with his batting for sure. But now I think he will be useful seam bowling allrounder for when india tour South Africa.

I am not discounting the Sri lankan batting they might appear inexperience and weak when compare to the Indian batting but the deck seems flat to me and Ashwin does look toothless in such decks. The likes of Tharanga , Gunathalika, Mathews and Kusal Mendis (His innings of 171 against Australia last year in still fresh in my mind also the best Sl batsmen for me in the current roster ) do have the quality in their ranks to counter the Indian bowlers.

Same here i have serious doubts about his abilities to play in the longest version of the game. He played against Australia and also England in the warmups last season and was tonked all over the park. Not sure how he will cope up in testing conditions of South Africa,New Zealand , England and Australia.

Those guys smashed Indian bowlers in the Champions Trophy. Sri Lanka still has a unpredictable batting lineup, they can either crumble or play with such finesse. With Gunaratne injured, it seems likely an innings defeat anyway.
