Why does career mode feel broken?

I'd give the match experience 6/10. I'm not sure what's easier as a developer; to build on what you have or start a fresh.

I'm probably gonna go completely off topic here and ramble about the academy.

I think the academy is great in terms of getting around licensing issues. However, having used it as much as playing the game, the are still glaring problems not just to the academy but that then seemingly effect other areas (placement of fielders and probably international selections in career mode). Simple things are really annoying: not being able to apply downloaded bats when in the equipment page of a player are really annoying or not being able to share kits like bats or transfer for them (from a men's to women's team).

The kit creation itself allows some great kits to be designed but it's also hindered by basically painting a blank canvas. It can take ages to get things in the right place or symettrical. Slots on sleeves, chest, collars etc for sponsors might be better and would make it easier. I reckon one possible reason we don't see long sleeve shirts in the game is because when you add a logo design to a short sleeve shirt it can look great, when you preview the long sleeve variation it looks silly because there's some big random patch of colour or a design from the logo that is hidden when designing in short sleeves. In PES when you create a kit you can use a template and just upload a PNG like this: https://www.pes-patch.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/Milan-Kits.png and the kits in the game look great.

This is something I've said before but player creation and editing could be made more consistent and straight forward by removing the skills from view. Instead just have a rating system for a player (World Class, Amateur, County etc). With the set ratings for different levels you'll get consistency for the most part, it'll make it easier testing the game for one. I've been tweaking skill settings for six months to see what difference it makes and I couldn't tell if you a World Class player should be rated 90 or 40 or a tail ender should be rated 5 or 20. It's difficult to know when they are underpowered or overpowered. Alongside this add different individual specialities each player can have for batting, bowling and fielding. Back foot specialist, Death Over specialist, Run Out speciliast. Stuff like that.

You could also incorporate these skills into career mode so rather than just going up in skill points you learn new deliveries, shots, fielding techniques or getting a faster progression at them - bascially like a skill tree you see in other games. You could become a 'Wrong Un Specialist' if you get five wickets bowling googlies or bowl 500 googlies. In the background your skills go up for bowling the googly. Same with learning to execute the Dilscoop or that thing where fielders jump in the air on the boundary and push the ball back in and catch it, could make fielding more interesting. I dunno I'm waffling now.
I agree mate gameplay is at least a 6 out of 10, the idea of the academy is a 10 out of 10... the execution is probably 5 out of 10... the creators in the academy vary from a 0 to a 10, the get best option is absolutely ingenious but obviously is flawed by the very nature of its process, and also maybe some technical difficulties. Also even in a ideal world where all the correctly linked and skill team and player creations were to function exquisitely with the get best option there's still the problem of the skills attributes effect being a complete unknown before the game and in this case like you say "still an unknown even 6 months down the track". I like your train of thought about the skills, and I think pro evo soccer has similar ideas skills and traits wise as well as a better functioning get best design (think you can only change the kits, names.. not skills.. I think but not 100% sure). Your not rambling pal this is a good talk lol!

This started out brief but there are so many things that I think could take the game from good to great.

I've suggested before that a 'collection' system would be good to run alongside the Get Best. So individuals or groups of individuals (e.g. those of us who create on here for example) could create a collection of teams that could be downloaded. Mainly this could save time in having to download all teams individually if you don't want the Get Best.

For player creation have a set number levels and you set the level for bowling, batting and fielding and for keepers a wicketkeeping rating:
Legend, World Class, Senior International, Established International, Junior International, Senior County, Established County, Junior County, Amateur

Then the additional skillsets increase or decrease values in certain areas. I'm inclined to say rather than increasing skills it'd be more interesting if they affected mentalities or confidence. I've been thinking you could have a 'Finisher' skill which makes a batsman, if they come in with 1/3 of an innings left, have +10 confidence start compared with others. A 'Dead Eye' for fielders, so they have a higher chance of hitting the stumps or are more likely to throw at the stumps. When you look around the field, the skill could be shown underneath their name, so you think: I don't want to risk a run to that fielder. Hell, you could even add in captaincy skill sets that influence the types of field (defensive so the field is spread and looks to keep runs down, agressive so that fields are set to take wicket, bowling changes - long spells, a spinner coming into the attack early, short sharp spells). You could have 'negative' skills too but some could work in both ways, a Dead Eye who has a low skill rating for fielding might end up resulting in more overthrows than run outs because they keep trying to hit the stumps but miss. To use everyone's favourite word it would make the gameplay a bit more 'dynamic'. There's dozens you could implement with silly but fun names. Gimme a blank piece of paper and a pen and I bet I could come up with 50 across the board. And wouldn't it be more fun from a career perspective to say 'I've got a Slogger who is great at Finishing and is a Dead Eye in the field', instead of my career player is a 71 batting and 45 bowling?

I meant to reply to @blockerdave about the skills. It feels like there is a 'can't' in terms of telling people how skills effect the game. There's the programming of the gameplay and then way too many variables to really know how well it's working. You have varied player skill (in game players and the person holding the controller), multiple formats, five different difficulties and four/five bowling and batting difficulties. The only difference I've noticed in the difficulties is that the catching gets more difficult and to be honest sometimes it seems like the AI is better on Pro/Veteran rather than legend.. Unless you simulate you're always playing a full match not 90 minutes of football crammed into 10 minutes. I imagine if you played a full 90 minutes every game on FIFA or PES the results would look pretty stupid.

If I were to say one thing for the next game it'd be have three difficulty levels - without the HUD, with the HUD and with the HUD but with basic foot movement for batting. I started playing without the bowling HUD and it's far better than with it. As an aside, based only on a handful of games, the smashpad issue, which didn't seem to come up until it was too late with patch 4, since I turned off the HUD this seems less frequent.
Maybe because I'm not bowling 4 or 5 out 6 perfect deliveries each over? It also seems to make spin bowling less powerful because you don't see if you're getting a green on the spin effectiveness. Still, it's a pain in the arse to have to write down on a piece of paper what I need to do with the stick to get variations for flight and bounce otherwise I'd never remember them. Picking a delievery would be straightforward if you just have the ball pop up in the middle of the screen and you press XYAorB to pick and press LT to get cutters for seamers or variations for spinners.

I believe that for career mode to be better is that it has to do with the Batting lineups for all formats. There needs to be an option for all players where you can pick there batting postion for test cricket and limited overs cricket. Like now where you can say there an opener or top order batsmen or a middle order batsmen, wicket keeper or lower order. So for example with a player such as De Kock in test cricket I would put him as a middle order batsmen and for limited overs I would put him as an opener. Also you need an option wher you can make a player retired form certain formats like MS Dhoni for example he's retired from test cricket but still plays the limited overs format. A little fix like that would make career mode so much better!! And way more realistic.

I would be delighted if BA make a note of these suggestions here and implement. Implement in their next version (at least). Implement without any bugs.
Note: Lost hope of patch 5 for DBC17. :(

Such suggestions were already mentioned in the DBC17 wishlist thread so don't get your hopes up.

You guys should lose any ounce of hope of betterment from BA, for dbc and all! Lets "engrave" your "great expectations"!! If some game franchise can't deliver the product as advertised, do hell with them!

Generally, Invest in some other "professional" franchise to get a game (not talking about cricket) as we desire!

Just to add a note about my "potential career mode fix" post here earlier, I'm not seeing any more changes/ alterations happening in team lineups anymore. It seems to behave just like dbc 14 now. Nothing "dynamic"! Anyone yet tried that out?
