He had a decent stint as coach with Quetta Gladiators, so not a bad appointment.

Moeen isn't even in the squad at the moment and I'd say there's no guarantee he goes to India - unless it's one big squad as Pakistan and West Indies have had. And I wouldn't throw him and Bess up against India's right-handers (which is the entire top 7 I think... depending where Jadeja plays and if Pant plays). I'd want someone to turn it away at least, Leach would be my first choice. Parkinson and now Rashid I would guess are in the mix. Of course Ed Smith might fancy Joe Denly's leg breaks to be the key to winning in India. One option Mo would bring is batting him at 7 (in the same way Woakes has done).

If Rashid is fit, confident then all we need to do is make Eoin Morgan test captain to bring the best out of him.

With the over-abudance of seam bowlers it'll be interesting to see what the hell bowling line up England come up with in India.

At least Mo has a first-class contract and is still interested in coming back. Rashid is just too left-field for me and he is nowhere near the quality required to be good either. Rashid Khan for example was taken to the cleaners in his game and I don't expect anything different should Adil Rashid play. In addition, Mo bowled well the last time he played versus India although he does have a poor record in India (then again, so do most spinners).

The off-spinner point is interesting but I still would not want to base my selection around it. Maharaj is probably one of the best left-arm spinners in the world and he was nothing more than a bowling machine when he played here but on the other hand Lyon was very good when he toured (albeit with some help from O'Keefe and some friendly pitches). Bess is nowhere near the finished product but you would want to play your best spinners irrespective of the opposition particularly when the cupboard looks bare. I don't expect rank turners like Lanka when England tour here and it should probably be similar to the pitches that were offered the last time England toured. Leach is a very good choice on those pitches, he will keep it simple and accurate as a first and on the batting surfaces seen recently over here that is the most important thing. As long as Bess can do a better job than Piedt did for Maharaj, I would go with them as the first choice. Parkinson is always an option should you want another bowler to turn it away and then there is the dark horse in Amar Virdi who could do great things in the future.

As for the other bowlers, Wood has to be a starter although Stokes will need to bowl a lot more to share the workload in Indian conditions. Broad should on paper be the other pick given his form and general mastery of the seam but for some reason does not have the best of records in Asian countries barring UAE. Still would prefer him for the opening game. Archer should be a handy backup who rotates with Wood given how adaptable he can be with pace and seam while Anderson should do the same with Broad on the more friendlier pitches.

Yeah it really is a bugger! Southampton is supposedly the English Riviera![DOUBLEPOST=1598003116][/DOUBLEPOST]
Mmmm: am I the only one who doesn't actually rate Archer that much?

Bloody southerners and their crap weather :lol

As for Archer, I think hes doing fine. There seems to be this expectation that he's going to be "the English Mitchell Johnson", totally ignoring how long it took Johnson to refine his game to its most lethal. I also reckon he suffers under Root's captaincy, in that he was fully overused in the winter, so to compensate for that hes being underused now and never building up any sort of rhythm.

I doubt you'll find yourself alone given the criticism he faces in general. :p

Archer's situation reminds me a lot of Raheem Sterling in that he is judged a lot harsher and considered to be overrated when they both are performing quite well. He does not seem to be an out and out quickie who wants to just bowl fast, he has shown a lot of skill in how he often varies his pace and deliveries to adapt to the conditions and he does have a tactical mind that has not been given it's due credit.

I still don't think England need their own version of a Mitchell Johnson, they need better batsmen first if they are to win down under and as long as Archer can bowl those reasonably long spells of quality pace and accuracy that he is most suited to, he will still be a valuable option all over the world let alone Australia and that is something that most teams would take.
