Get in Rahane as stop gap captain. Tell him he has a year to bring Shreyas/Ruturaj upto speed. That should be enough. Reminds me of the scenario back in 2007-08 when Kumble was appointed to helm affairs.
 
As expected, Gill has been announced as the new Indian captain. Not in favour of Pant as his deputy, as they needs to really buck up.

What surprised me the most is the exclusion of Shreyas Iyer-really wonder what the grounds are here. Side lining him after a stellar year just doesn't make any sense at all.
 
What a glorious day for Gill fan! How about revoking his ban for 24 hours ? :grinning:

I also noticed Easwaran's name in the squad. If so, we might be looking at a new opening pair.
 
It's mind boggling that Shreyas has been left out. He should have walked in as captain let alone as a player after a stellar year in domestic cricket.

Gill the batsman has not been up to the mark so far and I hope that changes for the better. There are some good selection in Easwaran, Sai Sudarshan, Karun and Arshdeep. It's a shame that Shami isn't fit enough at the moment to bowl long spells. He would have been a real asset in English conditions.

Sarfaraz on the other hand is rightly dropped as he needs to work on his technique for now. He is a wonderful player who likes to play on the up which is not easy in SENA and we have seen him struggling because of that. He is too good a player to be wasted. Hopefully he recognizes this and works hard on his technique.

Apart from Shreyas, I reckon Axar should have had a look in too but I understand they wanted an off spinner in the team as we already have Jaddu covering the role that Axar would have been in for.Screenshot_20250524_162711.jpg

Appointing Gill as a Test will gone down in the history as the biggest downgrade in Indian cricket.

His test overall record is average to say the least.

Right! India needed to replicate what Australia did with George Bailey few years ago in a different format - handing him captaincy while drafting him into the team. Shreyas was in a decent knick the last time he played Test cricket too. Should have been a perfect cog in the middle order and a vital brain that the team needs in the absence of couple of seniors now.
 
I see this as a composite failure of the Chetan Sharma/ Agarkar led committees + Previous Coach/Captain combo. The powers that be should have been able to identify a leader much earlier. In the recent past i.e. under Dravid- India has had many captains- we seem to have followed 'horses for courses' here. The numerous 'A' tours that have taken place should have helped identify leaders. It is unfortunate that we rely on superstars for this purpose. Had Ashwin not retired, he would have been my choice of captain for the England tour.
 
From Kohli to Sharma to Gill. What a downgrade in test captaincy....

Gill might surprise all of us but not having any high hopes on him at the moment. Jadeja would've been a better choice, atleast after this power vaccum created due to sudden retirements.

And Kohli was 'told' he won't be considered for test team anymore, reason why he retired and I believe same happened with Sharma too. Not because Kohli wasn't given captaincy and he decided to exit as 'assumed' by many. This is because BCCI didn't want to see fans riot for the way they are treating these players, specially Kohli, for the kind of brand he has built around him.
 
You know, the likes of Easwaran,Panchal, Ruturaj and Iyer have led India in more A games. It would have surprised many had they given either one of them the captaincy, but the way I see it- give it to a player who is in the scheme of things, not just any random one.

I'm very surprised they didn't do a farewell series of them (like Sachin with WI)—especially with a Bangladesh series in August and a West Indies one in October-ish. It's sad that he finished just 700/800 runs off 10,000.

Rohit Sharma was playing Test on borrowed time - never rated him in Test cricket, unlike in ODI.

I agree he may not be in 10k club, but the impact he made as Captain & Batsman especially in SENA countries needed to be respected more, he had more impact than our 90's fab 4 in test in SENA countries still his downfall in last few years in test cricket.
