Asif arrested in Dubai

Because 709 wickets speaks for itself so it's obvious to all he's a legend. I'm not gonna defend Warne's drug taking because he took drugs simple as. But what seperates him from Asif is that he served a ban and rightly so for breaking the doping rules. Asif didn't.
He served a 3 month ban, and paid a hefty fine.

Guess what.

Ian Botham was suspended for smoking cannabis in 1986.

Fleming, Hart, and Nash were fined for smoking cannabis in 1994.

Gibbs, Nel, Kep, Paul Adams, and Roger Telemachus were FINED - NO SUSPENSION for smoking marijuana during South Africa's tour of Windies in 2001

This isn't new...

Secondly: The "suspected material" weighs 0.24 grams. How much (if it is ophium - lab reports haven't come back yet) is that?

I think before everyone attempts to decide to

Asif was carrying "Shilajit" which is an ayurvedic medicine.

From Geo News: The Dubai Police have confirmed this (Shilajit), and Mohammad Asif is currently on his way to Pakistan.

Also, I would like to say this - UAE Authorities don't let anyone go, it is not like Pakistan or India, where with a couple of thousand dollars, you can go scot free and bribe people.

It is more or less like the USA and UK in that sense.

Mohammad Asif PASSED the drug test that was given to him in Dubai - his blood and urine was both tested, and both came out negative for drugs.

UAE Authorities are definitely not known for any leniency at all, ESPECIALLY toward Pakistanis and Indians. If the report that he has been released is true, you can be 200% sure that he has done nothing wrong (or is an extremely intelligent man)
It's not true, he's still there as far as I know.

Yes, Warne is an idiot, but there's a big difference between taking drugs and smuggling them into foreign countries, or taking performance enhancing drugs.

No offence zmario, but you would believe anything the Pakistani players say.

From what I've heard Pakistan and the UAE have a good relationship, so they may very well be able to get him out of this one too.

Good relationship my ass. If Asif was an Arab, this process would go a lot faster

We know that there was no ophium in Asif's body in the last 6 months (blood and urine test), all we need to know is the identity of the substance which he had (no results on test yet)

What tests? I know that Asif doesn't know that drugs are bad because of his lack of education, but your phantom source inside the Pakistani camp seems to know more than every media source?

The media reported that the UAE and Pakistani governments have a good relationship, which ZoraxDoom, who lives in Dubai, also told me.

According to Botham's book, he didn't smoke dope, a fan thrust it into his hand after a victory and he just stuffed it in a drawer.

I don't know if that's true or not, but to be honest what's Both got to gain by lying about it now.

Also, there's a massive difference between smoking dope and taking performance enhancing drugs. Smuggling drugs through an airport is even more stupid. Smoking dope is still a stupid thing for a sportsman to do, but it's nowhere near as bad as performance enhancing drugs and trying to smuggle opium through an airport.

You'd think a professional sportsman would be doing something cooler than opium. What is this, the 1890s? At this point it seems plausible to me that such a small package could have been planted by someone looking to avoid prosecution.

Not being a character from a Sherlock Holmes novel, I can't say how much opium one uses when smoking it, but being similar to heroin, which is sold in small units called points, I'd guess it is potent enough that a quarter of a gram is a single dose. The value of the drug certainly outweighs the punishment for being caught with it, especially in a Muslim country.

If he wasn't caught with any appropriate paraphernalia, it's unlikely that he was the owner of it. Not that Dubai police care, mind you.

Hey, Manee brought the grammar talk into this not me.

Wasn't Shabbir Ahmed the one who was action banned?

yea he was, and he underwent surgery's and he supposedly changed his action but from what the people that follow the ICL say his action hasn't changed.

one the Asif thing, so what was it that he was carrying ?

Latest article on Cricinfo said:
Mohammad Asif's ordeal in Dubai will continue for at least a few more days, after his hearing today was deferred to Sunday.

Sources close to the case confirmed to Cricinfo that the substance found in his wallet was a banned, recreational drug, though the urine tests conducted on Asif have come back negative.

The PCB, it is learnt, is still working through diplomatic channels to have the case resolved as soon as possible, though no Pakistani government official has yet become involved in the matter.

That's the latest, still not known exactly what it was, but confirmed that zmario's source is wrong again.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!! There goes another Pakistani Fast Bowler.:(

Geo TV reporting it was in fact Opium. Though I have yet to find it elsewhere. Why Asif? Why throw it all away? :(
