Day 1

Australia off to a flyer at the SCG

Day 1 turned out to be a great day for Australia as they pounded the english bowling attack from the off , Hayden (39) was the first 5th test victim lbw to Flintoff then Ponting (13) soon followed lbw to Harmsion leaving the hosts 114/2 ,that is where England`s joy for the day ended as Justin Langer on his farewell test match looked composed to reach his ton ,it was an exellent innings from the veteran he had plenty of support from Brad Hodge who was called up in place of Mike Hussey and he certainly didn`t dissapoint as he soon reacherd his 50 off 77 balls .
Langer`s innings came to an end when Hoggard got an inside edge onto the off stump , Langer walked back to the pavillion to a standing ovation after a knock 125 , Hodge also joined Langer on three figures what possibly could have been better after being called up and giving the selectors a problem, he stayed there till stumps on 116no along with Michael Clarke who is on 31 , Australia ammasing 340/3.

Day 2

England stage fight back with the bat

England by far had their best days cricket of the entire series ,with Australia starting the day way in control on 340-3 england got at them early with century maker Hodge only adding 9 to his overnight total when bowled by Harmsion ,Symonds had a brief stay at the crease out for 14 , Clarke who started the day on 31 went onto make 50 , his fifth of the series ,but five runs laster Flintoff bowled him .the Australian tail blown away by a hungry looking England side .
The reply was going to be important , the top order hasn`t played to its full abilty throughout this tour and after a nervous start which had numerous lbw appeals turned down and Cook dropped on 4 by Hayden off Lee England slowly but surley began to get the upper hand ,the boundries were quite remote but the singles seemed to frustrate Australia more and McGrath got himself in a slagging match in the crease centre after Strauss got an inside edge past Gilchrist for 4 two deliveries running , England kept the momentum despite a hour being lost to rain after tea and reached close on a very respectable 122 without loss.

Day 3

England contine good work with the bat

Michael Vaughan`s innings of 102 kept up England`s impressive start to the 5th test , England started the day on 112 without loss and they knew an early Australian wicket could spark a collapse ,but the openers started where they had left off on day 2 ,Cook especially went after the Australian attack .
Strauss was the first victim caught at 2nd slip by Hayden off Lee for 77 , Cook soon reached his 50 , the youngster again showing the cricket world he is more than able to cope with the pressure ,he now had Michael Vaughan at the crease and the two of them played brilliant , Cook eventully bowled by Warne for 72 , Vaughan also reached his 50 he now had the aggresive Pietersen as his partner , and he wasn`t holding back as he also reached 50 off 69 balls , Australia for the first time the series didn`t have an answer , England looked confident and Vaughan became the first England player to pass three figures in the series just before tea .
Tea came as a godsend for Austraila who needed to regroup , and it payed off as early as the 2nd over when Vaughan who had lost his momentum during the tea break was bowled between bat and pad for 102 , Pietersen soon follwed for 61 , Bell & Collingwood added some vital runs before both being removed , this left Flintoff(22) & Jones (6) at the centre at stumps with England on 388-6 all in all a good day for England they started off at a fast pace but slowed things down after the Vaughan wicket .

Day 4

Flintoff adds to Aussie misery as England press on

England are in pole postion to get a consolation test after a solid display with bat and ball , Flintoff was racing away as he added to his overnight total of 22 , he was taking most of the strike although Geriant Jones looked in good shape as well , 20 off a Tait over brought up Flintoff`s 50 ,Jones was looking good as well that was until McGrath removed his off stump with a peach of a delivery , Harmsion came and went for 5 again McGrath the main destroyer ,But Flintoff was going about his job and it was a great relief when he reached his ton , his knock coming off 184 balls with 18 fours .
After lunch Flintoff found a unlikely batting partner in Hoggard who was stroking the ball nicely picking off some lovely fours ,but Flintoff went trying to loft Warne for 4 he was bowled for 121 , Panesar then was bowled by Tait for 3 leaving Hoggard 35 not out and giving England a huge total of 562 a lead of 157.
The Australian reply got of to a nightmare start when Langer on his final innings in a Australian shirt spooned one to square leg for 1 , Hayden & Ponting went cheaply , Hodge started well having hit a ton in the 1st innings but Panesar out foxed him when he edged to Cook for 26 , Clarke & Gilchrist steadied the ship with Australia 120-4 at stumps

Day 5

England wrap up consolation win

England produced a good profesional performance to wrap up the 5th test , with Australia in trouble on 120/4 at the start of the days play England had to get at the batsmen and not let them settle , and they did just that when two wickets went in consecutive overs ,first Micheal Clarke was bowled by Hoggard for 46 and then next over Gilchrist was caught at first slip by Pietersen off the bowling off Harmison , this left two fresh Australian batsmen at the crease in an awkard position ,the wicket of Symonds had England players estatic ,they knew they were onto the tail ,a brief onslought by Tait & McGrath only held up the ineviatble , Australia 231-all out ,leaving England a target of 75 right on lunch.
The England reply hit the skids early on when Strauss(5) and Vaughan(6) both went off the bowling of a aggresive Brett Lee , but in-form Ali Cook & KP saw England home just a few overs before tea to secure a 8 wicket win.
