Batting first on this pitch was never going to prove an easy task, but even so the Netherlands were going along fairly okay at 61/4. Then came Johan Schroder's dismissal, closely followed by a hat-trick from Frank Tarrant during which he dismissed van Waveren, Ernsthausen and Rincker in succession. A total of 187 appeared quite defendable given the conditions and with South Africa at 128/7, it seemed the West Indies would indeed triumph over their Test-playing peers. But the South Africans possessed an all-rounder of high quality in Aubrey Faulkner, who despite being hidden away at No 7 played a match-winning hand of 57 off 78 balls to take his team to victory with a little more than an over to spare.

Float Woods looked nothing like the bowler who was the leading wicket-taker of the 1904 Olympic Games at St Louis with 14 wickets at 11.07, ahead of legendary bowlers such as Sydney Barnes, Bart King and Jack Hearne among others. Here he was two years later, recalled mostly on past performance and having played no cricket since 1904/05. He performed as such struggling to send down any more than 5 overs and never once threatening to pick a wicket during his spell. His international career was all but over this time.
