Story Doesn't anybody want to wear a Black Cap? (ICC 2006 Ashes)

To Steve:

Are you looking for immediate results, or would that be asking a bit much this early?

Steve Moore, Phil Manning. TV2. Are you looking for immediate results, or would that be asking a bit much this early?

SM: 'Well, we are stuck in a difficult situation. I will try for immediate results certainly. It's not like we'll go out to lose! However, I appreciate it'll be difficult though. On the one hand, no disrespect to them, but there are much harder tours we could be starting with than the West Indies. Having said that, we are defending a 1-0 win on our last tour there.

(END OF PRESS CONFERENCE)

First Selectorial Meeting for trip to West Indies
1st March, after Press Conference

ME: ?Right lads, yourself and Ross are obviously in as skipper & vice. So we need 16 others. I?d like to look at taking 4 openers as I know Ross has played there and at No. 3, but I think at international level we need him in the middle order. Agreed??
*Nods of agreement*
MR: ?Right, if we?re talking openers, Nicholas Horsley of Northern Districts is having an immense year and I think deserves his chance.?
MG: ?Well, so has Craig Cumming but I don?t think anybody would recommend him!?
MR: ?Nicky has never had a chance yet, he might prove to be a decent find. Why, who would you pick??
MG: ?This is going to sound hypocritical because he?s played 4 tests and not averaged a lot but I rate Jamie How?s technique and think he deserves another opportunity.?
ME: ?Anybody else??
SR: ?I?ll throw Peter Fulton as a bit of an experience vote.?
ME: ?Well, can I just add personally, that I?m always been a big fan of Michael Papps. I went to see Auckland and I found that the two 21-year old lads that batted at 1 & 3, Martin Guptill and Carl Cachopa, look like very good prospects.?
EC: ?I?d agree with young Cachopa, looks very difficult to bowl too.?
ME: ?Any thoughts Jacob, it?s your squad??
JO: ?I?d like to see Fulton and go with 3 of the young guys, just to have the experience around. I?m not a fan of Papps as an opener in the least.
ME: ?O.K., if we take these forward and pick 4 from these names later, onto middle order specialist batsman, I?d like to look at taking 3 or 4. Ross is one of them. We have obviously lost a lot of our best players in this position to the ICL and IPL. Anyone ready to step up to the plate??
MG: ?Jarrod Englefield from Central Districts is the form man, but has never stood out before and he?s now 28, whether he?s a late developer I?m not sure. I like the look of young Sean Eathorne of Otago though.?
ME: ?I haven?t seen much of them but I saw Rob Nicol of Auckland and he?s another good player with potential.?
EC: ?These are all mostly right-handers, I?d like to throw in Danny Flynn of Northern Districts as a young lefty, to give us this option.?
JO: ?Now I?d want to ask for experience but they?ve ALL gone off to Indian so I think we?ll have to stick with this lot. There is Sinclair but to my mind he woefully off the pace at the top level. I wouldn?t want him.?
ME: ?Fair enough, we may cut 1 or we may take all 4, although 5 is a lot with 4 openers. We?ll see what make up we want. Right All-Rounders, obviously yourself Jacob, plus I think we were all in agreement when we were having a chat earlier that despite his sometimes, shall we say, less than professional habits, we have to take Jesse. Everyone agree??
CM: ?Think So??
ME: ?Cool, then that?s 2 sorted, anyone else??
CM: ?Luke Woodcock from Wellington? Gives us a 2nd spinner so we only need 1 more, plus he?s another left-hander.?
JO: ?I?m in agreement with that, don?t think there?s anybody else, unless you only want one spinner as it?s the Caribbean therefore I?d go with Ewen Thompson as a left-arm quick.?
ME: ?Fair enough, I?m not even sure myself. So we?ll take these 2 and think about the bowling make-up later. Steve, Keepers, get me 2.?
SR: ?There?s two 22-year olds, Bradley-John Watling from Northern Districts & Derek De Boorder from Auckland. These are the best 2 keepers in New Zealand, neither can bat that well though.?
ME: ?Right, I really wouldn?t want to take both, I?d want an older head or a better batter as backup. What?s the strength and weaknesses of them??
SR: ?Braders is your more consistant keeper, not spectacular just reliable. Whereas, Derek is the sort of guy who has unbelievable talent with the gloves. He will take spectacular catches, but he will shell the odd one he should take.?
ME: ?Well, we can discuss what type of strengths we want. I think there is 2 options to join them as back-up. Michael Papps again, for his batting & Chrisy Nevin for his One-Day international experience. Jacob, how?d you view taking Papps as a back-up keeper??
JO: ?I?d prefer it to taking him as an opener. However, I would like to have Nevin around the squad.?
ME: ?O.K. then we have 2 decisions to make there. Moving on, I only want to take 1 spinner, whether we pick Woodcock or Thompson. Who?d you think Funky??
CM: ?Jeetan Patel, Jeetan Patel & Jeetan Patel, it?s that simple, there is seriously NO contest, Nobody else.?
ME: ?Well, as a left-armer myself, I?ll throw Bruce Martin in, but I don?t think anybody would consider him, especially with Woodcock as a spinning option??
*deadly silence*
MR: ?I rather think that?s a no!?
ME: ?Fair enough, I think, the way things are shaping up. I?ll only go for 4 middle order guys and 4 quicks. So, which 4 quicks??
EC: ?Chris Martin is a dead cert.?
ME: ?Yep. No need for a discussion on that one. I?d also like to take James Franklin and I?ll make an executive decision on that because I have always rated him.?
EC: ?O.K., I like Warren McSkimming of Otago. He?s no more than medium but he is insanely accurate and deserves his chance despite being 28. There is a lot of hype in the papers about Gillespie but I think he?s too inconsistent really.?
JO: ?I like Gillespie though. Him and I think if we take one of these two I want a younger guy. Which for me, is young Te Davis from Northern Districts.?
EC: ?Well if you want a younger guy, I?d like to take young Hamish Bennett of Canterbury. His stats don?t suggest much but he is a fiery young bloke.?
MR: ?Whereas, I like his teammate Leighton Burtt.?
MG: ?& I like the pace of his other teammate, Richard Sherlock!?
ME: ?Right, we?ve gotta sort this out?..?

Excellent stuff..I like the format of your stories.
