England in Ireland

Joyce vs. Ireland would be wrong on so many levels...
Agreed. I've nothing against players playing for a country they weren't born in, if they qualify by residence. But as far as I'm concerned, once you play for one country, you shouldn't be able to switch. Ed Joyce should be playing for Ireland in this match, not England.

Yeah, I'm annoyed enough England having uncapped foreigners in their team, but taking capped foreigners is just wrong. How is Irish cricket going to progress like this, if when we get a half-decent player, he is stole away from us?

It was Ed Joyces decision, remember that though James.

I also agree he probably should be playing for Ireland.

Hardly a first for Cricket though.

Not a first for sport either. In football you can do the same as long as you have played under a certain amount of games and I seem to recall a swimmer in the commonwealth games who swapped countries and was way into her international career. Its the players decision to play for a country or not (as long as they are eligable of course).
Whats the point in forcing Joyce to play for Ireland, he clearly doesnt want to.

Football doesn't allow you to change countries once you've played for one at Under 15 level or above.

If Joyce wanted to play for England instead of Ireland, he should never have played for Ireland in the first place.

An English swimmer transferred to Italy as her husband was Italian and they moved to Italy, so just for convenience.

Don't forget that with Joyce making his way in the England ODI squad, we could have the ridiculous situation where he played for Ireland in the World Cup qualifiers, and for England in the World Cup itself. He'd could essentially play for two different countries in the same tournament. That is completely unacceptable, in my opinion.

I'm pretty sure that law was ammended in recent years to 21 as there were repeated complaints that players had to commit whilst being too young to make such an important decision.

But yes it is silly that a player can play for 2 countries in one competition, maybe he should be "cup tied"

Not a Sonia O'Sullivan fan, are we Nixon? :p
Her situation was an absolute disgrace though, but as it turned out, she didn't compete after being selected.
Anyway, I've gotta agree there; I don't have a huge problem with overseas players gaining citzenship, thereby being elegible for national selection, but playing for two countries is just wrong.

Kepler Wessels played for both Australia and South Africa in the big time.

Is he the most famous cricketer to have played for two different teams in Tests?

With Football you can play above under 15 level for one country and play for another. Tim Cahill is an example, he played under 20s for Samoa (at 14), but had to wait 10 years to play for Australia.

I don't see the problem with Ed Joyce playing for England. What about Graeme Hick? Gavin Hamilton? Both played for different countries before playing for England.

I don't know about Kepler Wessels being the most famous (or best), back at the start of the 20th century there was a bit of swapping between Australia and England. Not sure how good any of those were off the top of my head.

Graeme Hick only ever played for Zimbabwe in friendly matches, never in any ICC sanctioned match. Ed Joyce has played for Ireland in the ICC Trophy, which is a different thing.

Gavin Hamilton should never have played for England, but not just because he'd already played for Scotland!

This is ridiculous now. Middlesex have now decided not to release Eoin Morgan to play for Ireland in the ODI!

The ICC need to step in now. As far as I'm concerned, release for ODIs should be compulsary!

Is this an official one day international? If not, then I can understand why clubs would not want to release their players.
