ok guys, need your help on this. i'll be assigning every player with their primary fielding positions soon, so if you can share your knowledge...it'll be great ! :D

e.g (primary field positions)

Sachin Tendulkar - First Slip
Yuvraj Singh - Point
Ishant Sharma - Third Man

etc

Dravid- first slip. If he's not at first slip, Sachin is. However, Dravid is always first slip to spinners.

Some NZ ones,

Ross Taylor - First Slip
Daniel Vettori - Mid off
Martin Guptill - Square Leg
Jesse Ryder - Gully

Aus (I'm pretty sure)
M.Hussey and/or Clarke - Point or Gully
Ponting - Slip or short cover
Katich - Short Leg

More NZ:

Scott Styris: 3rd slip
Shane Bond: Third man
Kyle Mills: Fine Leg
Tim McIntosh: 2nd Slip
Daniel Flynn: Cover and also positions such as silly mid on and short leg

T. M dilshan - Cover, short extra cover, point
Mahela Jayawardena - slips
Malinga - short mid off or mid on
T samaraweera - Slips
M Muralidaran - Mid wicket
Jayasuriya - any place other then slips
Chamara Silva - Cover point
Ajanth mendis - Third man , fine leg

If you give us player list we can write fielding position next to them. ;)

Yeah I am great.

England:

Slips: Strauss
Point: Collingwood
Midwicket: KP
Short Leg: Ian Bell

I think you should concentrate on the "glamour" positions and get those right and then perhaps some notoriusly bad fielders could always go at fine leg or 3rd man. The rest could be fairly random I think with a bias towards bowlers going on to boundary positions...

The most important/distinctive for being a particular person postions are...

Keeper :p, Slip 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, Point/Gully, Short leg...short cover.

Once you've got these for each of the teams the rest don't really matter? Or am I wrong?

tom beat me to it,

yes, colly fields at point in odi's and slips in tests.

also, monty panesar used to field in 3rd man area, because he wasn't a great fielder.
