Samson is one guy who you can pick based on IPL experience

The fact is he doesn't convert his starts into big scores and with the rise of Rishabh Pant and Ishan Kishan I don't see a reason why he should be getting a chance. And if we talk about middle order batsman Iyer would be a better option.

Rishabh Pant is the frontline keeper who will be taking over from MS Dhoni. I am talking about a backup keeper option who can also be a good middle order fit. We are in a generation today where batting is a more important skill to have than wicketkeeping.

Manish Pandey scored a 100 today and Shreyas Iyer another 47. Gill has scored some heavy runs as well. I really would want Gill opening with Rohit Sharma and Shreyas Iyer could be our number 4 batsman. For me the team we should look for the future is as below

1. Gill
2. Sharma
3. Kohli
4. Iyer
5. Pant
6. Someone here
7. Hardik
8. Bhuvi/Chahal
9. Kuldeep
10. Shami
11. Bumrah

There are too many options out there and it is going to be a challenge to see who fits in where. We have Prithvi Shaw, Shubman Gill, Shreyas Iyer, Manish Pandey, Ishan Kishan, etc. and we only have a few spots in the batting order. Rishabh Pant has shown this WC that he is here to stay and should get better with more experience (and with the next WC in India, Pant is going to be a massive factor).

Jadeja has to stay in the plans as he is just 30 and with his incredible fitness and fielding, cant see why he cant play in 2023. Until one or both of Kuldeep and Chahal drastically improve their batting skills, I'd not play both of them together for a consistent period of time. India has to start asking for more from Kuldeep and Chahal as far as their batting is concerned. Or else, find a new leggie who can bat (can Markande or Rahul Chahar bat?). Also get Krunal Pandya in and have him compete with the spinners. India does not need both their spinners to be leggie. One good leggie with a left arm spinner or an off spinner should be good. I am confident finger spinners will make a comeback in international cricket as this 'leggie' fad will blow over soon.

Deepak Chahar should hopefully come into fray soon and should compete against Shami and Bhuvi. Deepak Chahar can bat and is as attacking with the ball as Shami is. Also Khaleel and Saini should bang on the door too.

Tbh Prithvi Shaw is more deserving than Gill. I would rather have Gill in the middle order than opening.

I was just watching a news channel and it clearly mentioned Kohli will be travelling and will not be skipping the ODIs/T20s.

Windies are not a bad side, they got a decent team which can challenge our ability.

Not sure if Dhoni will play the Indian home season or not. Might be the selectors are wanting to move past him by not picking him for this Windies tour and letting him consider his own future. Good to see some deserving names selected in the squad, Sheryas Iyer was never given a real extended run in the middle order and Saini has some serious pace breaching 145 km+ from what I've heard. Hopefully, the quest to find a solid middle order is done right this time around.

Such a disappointing squad in the end. Some of my thoughts:

  • Dropping DK from T20s is strange. He has been a total failure in ODIs, but has been quite decent in T20s and is one of the few players we have that doesn't need an invitation to start slogging.
  • The lack of all-rounders in the ODI squad is a shame too. Was finally hoping that we would start playing with two all-rounders like every other semi-finalist.
  • Happy to see Mayank and Pandey in their respective squads. We've chosen players over IPL form instead of years of domestic performances for far too long now and this is a welcome sign that domestic performances along with India A performances hold good weight too.
  • The last time we toured Windies after a World Cup, we went in with just five players that played in the World Cup and rested plenty of seniors in ODIs. Disappointed to not see the same now, feel like Rohit, Kohli, spin twins and even players like Jadhav, Jadeja and Shami should have been rested. On the other hand, I would have fully supported a full strength squad for T20s seeing that we have the World Cup in a year but seems like the selectors have got other stranger ideas. :rolleyes
  • Bhuvi continues to be mismanaged in test cricket, the last game he played was in South Africa four test series' ago where he was outstanding. It makes even less sense when you remember that he is someone who can bat decently and is actually pretty reliable in overseas conditions with the bat. Three spinners seems like overkill for these pitches, particularly because Vihari can bowl part-time too and Kohli isn't really a big fan of spin overseas.
  • I only hope that Shaw wasn't selected due to his injury. Rahul has been a walking wicket in tests for a while now and not selecting a backup opener is a very poor decision. Desperately hope that Rahul turns it around as he has shown lots of talent in the past but India needs to be a lot more ruthless instead of hoping for another Rohit-esque resurgence if he fails. Windies are no pushovers in their home and any poor team selection like in previous series' can lead to an easy upset.

Khaleel and Saini style of bowling would be good for Windies pitches.. But they need to gain that experience to be consistent with their length.. Would be good to see how they go about it..

Umesh selected for tests.. Hmm.. Would have preferred Deepak Chahar to start off on the longer format too as he is someone who is consistent with the line and length and can swing the new ball too..

But honestly looking forward to Ashes than WI series.. Should be good month of cricket..

My team for India for the 1st T20I

Rohit Sharma:bat:
Shikhar Dhawan:bat:
Virat Kohli:c::bat:
Shreyas Iyer:bat:
Rishabh Pant:wkb:
Krunal Pandya:ar:
Ravindra Jadeja:ar:
Bhuvneshwar Kumar:bwl:
Deepak Chahar:bwl:
Rahul Chahar:bwl:
Khaleel Ahmed:bwl:

  • Would want to continue having our best top order and would rely on them to get us a solid and quick start
  • Having Shreyas at 4 would give us strength and confidence in middle overs and help in setting up platform for others to follow
  • I would like to have Pant at 5 as he can help us in accelerating the scoring rate in the middle overs which he has done so often in IPL Cricket
  • Both Krunal and Jadeja gives us good spin bowling all-round options, both can hit the ball long and hard when required and can also give us wickets in the middle overs when bowling
  • I would want Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Deepak Chahar as our opening bowlers and they have done well with the new ball in IPL and can give us wickets as well or at best can be economical in Powerplay Overs
  • I have gone with Rahul Chahar as we already have 2 off-spinners so having Washington Sundar does no good as we won't have any variation in terms of our bowling options which can cost any side in this format
  • Last but not the least Khaleel should be bowling middle overs and at the death as he has got good variety of slower balls and cutters and also have a decent rising bouncer which can trouble the batsman at death time and again to keep the batsman guessing especially when they are looking to get some quick runs for some late flourish

To me this is a good all-round team as we have our batting extending upto no.9 and have equally good bowling options with quality swing bowlers to bowl at start of the innings in Bhuvi and Deepak Chahar and have decent spinners to control the run-rate in the middle overs. Khaleel gives us option of using him as a floater while bowling as he can bowl decently at start of the innings, can give us wickets in the middle overs and keeps the runs down at death.

Surprised to see Kedar Jadhav being picked for the ODI series. I hope it's only because Vijay Shankar has not fully recovered (because Jadhav's part time bowling is seen as a positive; which Shankar can replace as he is an even better part timer himself). And why is Karthik dumped for even T20I's? The WC is next year and Karthik is good for T20's. After having played with 3 wicketkeepers in recent times, now we have only one keeper (with KL Rahul as the backup)? Ridiculous! Karthik should have been selected for either Manish or Shreyas in the T20I side.

The T20I squad looks way better now as far as batting options at the bottom goes. If you see among the spinners selected in the T20I side, 2 out of the 3 can bat well (Jadeja and Sundar). Also Deepak Chahar can bat too, along with Bhuvneshwar.

I see why Gill did not get through because they saw Manish Pandey as a better and more experienced option, but Gill should definitely be the hottest on the sidelines to come in if someone goes through a slump or injury.

Surprised to see Shaw not back in the Test XI. Also Saha no matter how good he is keeping wickets with Pant in XI its time over for him and should be given more chances. I see Shaw replacing Saha directly.

Atleast the entire squad is touring US and I am excited to see them all in action in Florida in weeks time.
