South Africa and Sri-Lanka on standby to host the 2022 IPL due to the rise in Covid 19 cases in India.
Sri Lanka is on the verge of a bankruptcy, I wonder whether hosting IPL will be a boon or a bane for them?

Ben Stokes: Batting Avg: 25.55 (134.50 S/R)
Bowling: Avg: 34.78 (8.55 E/R)

Marcus Stoinis: Batting Avg: 27.69 (135.80 S/R)
Bowling: Avg: 32.30 (9.50 E/R)

Shakib sucks in IPL, Morris is retired & Curran isn't coming so signing Stoinis makes sense IMO!

Signing Stoinis does make sense, just not for the 11 crore figure. He's a batting all-rounder these days for the most part and relying on him for bowling is risky. He is also a top order batsman being shunted down the order because teams believe 'long levers' must equate to a finisher.

Also, I've long claimed that Ben Stokes is an underwhelming player in T20s. No point in holding him up as the person of comparison.

11c is indeed a high amount but I think teams are worried at the lack of good AR's so they probably signed him up as to avoid a potential bidding war with others.

Agreed! Stokes in Tests & ODI is 10x the player he is in T20:cheers

If there are 10 teams, I would prefer two groups of 5 teams each and the best two of each group playing the semi finals.

Ten teams in a single league table is too much. Already feel there are too many group stage games in the IPL with 8 teams.

Actually the team are going to be divided in groups. The teams will play each other in both home and away matches in their group while one of the home or away match with teams in the other group. In all there would be 72 games as compared to 56.

The points table though is going to be a single ladder.

That’s interesting but I still prefer separate group tables.

By the way seems like this season may be played in India at Mumbai/Pune. But without crowds.

If there are no crowds and IPL is going to be played only in a couple of venues I would prefer South Africa.

IPL without crowds and proper home/away matches in India doesn’t appeal to me.

I would end up missing most matches then! I would not prefer a place other than UAE/Sri Lanka/Bangladesh unless it's a day match due to timings.
Yes I hadn’t considered that.
Sri Lanka would be ideal in that case.

I doubt if BCCI will host the tournament in a timing that's not "India primetime". The massive chunk of the league's audience is going to be from India. I think they'll ensure that the games are held at the usual time slots, which could mean that there won't be any actual D/N game (SA is 3.5 hrs behind India) and all games will be day affairs. I think games will start at 12 noon SA time (for the day games) and at 4PM for the evening games.

Which could mean that the dew factor will be really minimized and the chances of the toss playing a big role is really reduced.

India will be inviting them over soon for another ODI series. No doubt, to help the team cope with loss against South Africa.

In terms of IPL, they are the best suited, provided they charge peanuts for hosting. Seems that the BCCI has fallen out with the Emirates Cricket Board over the payment that was demanded and subsequently paid for the IPL 2021.

However, I still feel that they would prefer South Africa as a destination.

Indeed. 2 groups of 5 each is what they should look at for the time being. Eventually, the IPL ought to expand into 14/16 teams with relegations and promotions. Having 2 groups makes sense. Perhaps, they could do with a Super 6 after the conclusion of the group stage as well.

They could have two groups of five. Top four qualify for the super 8s who all play each other twice and then the top three qualify for the super eliminator where they all play each other again twice. Then have the standard knock outs.
