Pakistan v West Indies - DMC Trophy, 3rd One Day International - Pakistan Innings

With 6 runs required from 2 balls it was anyone's game but Saqlain Mushtaq heaved a six over the leg side to see Paksitan to a 3 wicket win with 1 ball to spare and wrap up the series 3-0. Salim Elahi was out in the first over when he repeated his dismissal of the first match and top edged a hook shot to be caught at square leg off Gibson. Razzaq then reached a powerful 50 off 20 balls before holing out on the leg side boundary. Hasan Raza played an entertaining innings before he and Yousuf Youhana were bowled off their pads in the same over attempting on drives to balls pitching outside leg stump from off spinner Powell. Moin Khan hit out well before being caught at deep mid wicket to leave the match evenly poised with Pakistan on 166/5 and 7.3 overs remaining. Shadab Kabir had batted patiently at one end for most of innings and he reached his second half century of the series off 37 balls before edging to the keeper when trying to advance and loft a straight drive. Shoaib Malik hit his first 2 balls for four before mis timing one to sqaure leg, to leave the score at 204/7 with 2 overs remaining. Azhar Mahmood played a sensible innings to ensure there was no collapse before Saqlain Mushtaq hit the winning 6 with a ball to spare. The West Indies bowlers had put in their best all round performance of the series wth Gayle the pick of the attack with 3 wickets with his tidy offspin. Brian Lara was named man of the match for his fine innings and Saeed Anwar man of the series for his match winning batting in the first two games.

Pakistan have made 2 changes to their squad from the DMC Trophy, replacing the injured Saqlain Mushtaq with pace bowler Mohammad Akram and bringing in allrounder Shahid Afridi as a 16th player. The West Indies have replaced Collymore with left armer Collins and have added McLean to the squad after he had finished his English county commitments. Sri Lanka have named a fairly experienced lineup although they plan to give some opportunities to some young batsmen as the series progresses. Sri Lanka v West Indies - Coca-Cola Champions Trophy in Sharjah - preview

A Normal pitch and Humid conditions may help the seamers early on but the pitch is unlikely to offer much spin so it may help the West Indies batsmen nullify the Sri Lankan spinners. The Sri Lankans have opted for a bowling attack containing 3 left arm seamers while the West Indies have surprisingly given a game to left arm orthodox spinner McGarrell after overlooking him for the DMC Trophy on more favourable wickets.

Sri Lankan team: S.Jayasuriya (c), A.Gunawardena, M.Attapattu, R.Arnold, M.Jayawardena, H.Tillekeratne, R.Kaluwitharana (wk), C.Vaas, N.Zoysa, M.Muralitharan, S.de Silva.

West Indies team: P.Wallace, B.Lara (c), C.Gayle, F.Reifer, S.Chanderpaul, R.Powell, R.Jacobs (wk), O.Gibson, N.McGarrell, N.McLean, F.Rose.

The West Indies have won the toss and elected to bat.

Windies bowling looks little weak comapred to Vaas,Zoysa,SdeSiva and Murali! But still Gud luck to Windies! Tough task ahead for Windies bowlers, hope they do better!

also very interesting to know,

Why u chose McGarrell? ( I have no idea abt him though :) ) Becos u want to play with old spinners.... Isnt harper a better spin option over McGarrell and also there was another spinner called Nagamatoo ( I am not sure of the correct name )!

Sri Lanka v West Indies - Coca-Cola Champions Trophy in Sharjah - West Indies innings

The West Indies were given a good start by the steady Wallace and an aggressive Lara as they posted 65 for the first wicket inside 6 overs. Lara was out caught on the leg side boundary attempting his 4th six off Jayawardena's medium pace. Muralitharan then bowled Gayle with a quick arm ball as he attempted to hit across the line, and then Reifer fell in the same over when he edged to the keeper when attempting to advance and loft down the ground. Wallace and Chanderpaul then added 111 for the 4th wicket to place the West Indies in a strong position, Wallace reaching 50 off 36 balls before holing out and Chanderpaul reaching his 50 off 23 balls. Powell struck a couple of sixes before holing out off Arnold. Chanderpaul then hit 26 off Zoysa's final over including a six to reach his 100 off 39 balls, before Vaas bowled Jacobs and Gibson in the final over of the innings as they swung across the line at yorker length delvieries. Muralitharan and Vaas lead the attack well as usual but lacked lack support. A target of 254 seems set to produce a close finish though the West Indies will need to take early wickets to put pressure on a strong Sri Lankan batting lineup.

In answer to your question Suren about McGarrell, Hooper had retired temporarily from international cricket at this time and Nagamootoo was yet to make his West Indies debut. McGarrell had toured South Africa during the 98/9 season so I thought he should be given a chance during this series.

what an innings by Chanderpaul and Wallace. I expected Lara and Gayle though to hammer the bowlers ;)

Oh yes, i forgot about Hooper! Having Hooper in the team gives an additional spin option as he is an nice bowler in my opinion. Infact Gayle plays that role i guess ;)

Gud Luck for McGarrel though :)

Sri Lanka v West Indies - Coca Cola Champions Trophy in Sharjah - Sri Lanka Innings

After dominating proceedings for long periods of the match, Sri Lanka lost their last 5 wickets for 17 runs to hand the West Indies their first win of a difficult tour. A brilliant half century off just 16 balls by Gunawardena took the total to 103/1 in the 6th over before a couple of quick wickets let the West Indies back into the game. Arnold and Jayawardena then added 60 and at 168/3 after 11.2 overs, with a further 86 required from 52 balls with 7 wickets in hand, it seemed like Sri Lanka would coast home. A double strike by McLean proved to be the turning point of the match, as it forced the Sri Lankans to abandon their aggressive approach and consolidate, and from that point the run rate required steadily rose. An indication of how much the balance of the game shifted late in the innings was that Arnold had reached his half century off 19 balls, before adding just 14 off his last 15 balls as the West Indies tightened the screws. Left with no other option than to hit out, Sri Lanka collapsed in a flurry of wild shots to leave their last wicket pair requiring 22 from 7 balls, before Rose ended the match with the first ball of the final over. The fast bowlers were particularily impressive and troubled the batsman with the short ball throughout the innings, with 4 wickets falling to top edged hook shots. McLean was the pick of the bowlers on his return from English county commitments, while Rose and Gibson gave aggressive support, and left arm spinner McGarrell also played his part with a tidy spell on a pitch which offered him little assistance. Chanderpaul was named man of the match for his unbeaten century which set up what proved to be a winning total.

Coca Cola Champions Trophy in Sharjah - Pakistan v West Indies - preview

With the West Indies finding some form and Pakistan full of confidence after their victory in the DMC Trophy, this promises to be a close game. The West Indies have brought in Hinds to replace Reifer after his failure in the first match against Sri Lanka, while Pakistan are missing Waqar Younis and Saqlain Mushtaq, who have joined Shoaib Akhtar on the injured list. A Dry pitch should make for a high scoring contest, though it will offer some turn for the spinners, and the ball may swing about a bit in the Humid conditions, meaning the batsman won't have it all their own way.

Pakistan: Saeed Anwar, Shadab Kabir, Inzamam-ul-Haq, Yousuf Youhana, Hasan Raza, Moin Khan (wk), Wasim Akram (c), Azhar Mahmood, Abdul Razzaq, Shoaib Malik, Mushtaq Ahmed.

West Indies: P.Wallace, B.Lara (c), W.Hinds, S.Chanderpaul, R.Powell, C.Gayle, R.Jacobs (wk), O.Gibson, N.McGarrell, N.McLean, F.Rose.

Pitch: Dry
Weather: Humid, Night

Pakistan have won the toss and elected to bat.

Pakistan v West Indies - Coca Cola Champions Trophy in Sharjah - Pakistan Innings

Pakistan have set the West Indies 260 to win after a solid but slightly dissappointing effort with the bat. Saeed Anwar scored a century but was tied down for much of his innings and it was left to Yousuf Youhana to provide most of the late innings momentum with an aggressive half century. Although the West Indies only managed to take 5 wickets they will be pleased with their effort of containing the Pakistanis and will feel confident of victory. McGarrell bowled another tidy spell and claimed two wickets to highlight the folly of his omission on the spinner friendly pitches in Pakistan during the DMC Trophy.

Pakistan - 259/5 off 20 overs

Pakistan v West Indies - Coca Cola Champions Trophy in Sharjah - West Indies innings

Chanderpaul scored his second unbeaten century of the tournament as he shared an unbroken partnership of 114* for the 6th wicket with Jacobs to steer the West Indies to victory. Although the winning runs were achieved with only one ball to spare, the West Indies were always ahead of the run rate required thanks mainly to an early onslaught by Lara, who reached 50 off 11 balls after again promoting himself to open the innings. The loss of three quick wickets left the scoreboard reading 95/4 after 6 overs, but a quickfire partnership of 52 for the 5th wicket put the chase back on track. With the score on 147/5 off 8.5 overs, and a further 113 required for victory, another wicket could have spelled doom for the West Indies, but Chanderpaul and Jacobs realised this and showed their experience as they batted within themselves to post a match winning partnership. Pakistan missed the injured Waqar Younis and were left a bowler short after Razzaq and Mahmood proved expensive. Wasim bowled Wallace with the first ball of the innings and was difficult to score off, but apart from Mushtaq Ahmed who exposed the West Indies traditional weakness against wrist spin, the bowling lacked penetration and discipline, with the young trio of Mahmood, Razzaq and Malik showing their lack of experience in pressure situations.
