Chapter 2: Sleep
I screeched to a halt into a parking space outside the club building, and jumped out of my car. I grabbed my bag and ran into the reception area. I saw Mia reading the same Heat magazine and rushed over to her. Mia looked up and started to laugh. I thought it was rather inappropriate considering the fact I was about to be bollocked by my coach on my first day, but what the hell, it was rather funny.
"Hey" I said with a wry smile across my face.
"You best get over to the changing room pet. Your going to get in even more **** if you stand here talking to me." She replied.
"Where are they?"
She pointed to a door down the end of the corridor, and I thanked her before walking briskly towards the changing rooms. I threw open the door to see all the players sitting there in their kit. After a couple of seconds they all lept up and piled onto me. I had no clue who any of these guys were, and yet I was lying in a heap below about 15 players. After half a minute of squirming and trying to breathe, they all jumped off and let me get up. I looked up to see all the guys laughing and then a smallish guy with very short hair came up to me and offered his hand.
"Kellog, I'm Alex Neil, the skipper. The boss is going to be pissed when he gets back. Told us we canny start 'till you get here." He said as we shook hands.
"Not the best start, but at least he now knows what I'm like."
"Well go sit over there by Lucas. Today the reserves and first team are training together. It's usually separate, but I guess the boss wants to see what you got."
"No pressure then."
I headed off towards Lucas, a black lad who looked a similar age to me.
"Alright mate." He said with an English accent.
"Alright. So, I'm not the only English one here then?" I said sarcastically.
"Ha, no, but there 'aint many of us. Heard you used to play for Bristol City."
"Yeah, too much of being late and getting in fights. Obviously I haven't changed much."
"Well I'm the new kid here to really. Signed from Huddersfield in the summer, so a bit of a change."
"Nice one. So what..."
I was interrupted by the sound of Billy Reid bursting through the changing room doors.
"Kellog. My office. Now."
I quickly shoved on my training top and headed towards the door. Lucas wished me luck, and I followed Billy to his office. He held the door and told me to sit down like he had done the day before. I went in and sat down.
"Right, I'm not going to bollock yous as yous might expect. But this is your one and only chance. If yous are late ever again, I will have yous running laps for the rest of the day. Understood laddy?" He said strongly.
"Yes, boss. Won't happen again."
"Damn right it won't. Now, onto today's training session. The reserves and first team will be mixed together. We'll do a few drills but I want to see what you've got in a game situation. So piss off and get ready. See you out on the pitch."
I got out of the leather seat and went through the door. I followed the route that was led by Billy, and managed to make it back into the changing rooms. A few of the guys made 'oooooh' noises and a tall Scottish man shouted 'naughty, naughty, Kellog!" I sat back down next to Lucas.
"So, a bollocking?" Asked Lucas.
"Yeah." I lied. "I won't be doing that a again."
"Right, get your boots on. Lets see what you got."
