*All games against India A

Squads

India A: Mohammad Kaif (capt), Aakash Chopra, Cheteshwar Pujara, Manoj Tiwary, S Badrinath, Suresh Raina, Parthiv Patel(wk), Ishant Sharma, Yo Mahesh, Pankaj Singh, Pragyan Ojha, Arjun Yadav, Ashraf Makda, Amit Mishra

Coach: Paras Mhambrey

South Africa A: Morné van Wyk, Alviro Petersen, Robbie Peterson, Boeta Dippenaar (capt), Hashim Amla, Justin Ontong, Ashwell Prince, Werner Coetsee, Dale Steyn, Thami Tsolekile, Friedel de Wet, Yusuf Abdullah, Rory Kleinveldt, Charl Langeveld

India A's batting line up is very strong and I fully expect them to put up a fight against what will be a strong South African A side. Badrinath and Parthiv Patel will look to build on their three centuries and a fifty which they both got in the four day games against Zimbabwe and Kenya. Aakash Chopra will no doubt be looking to once and for all secure the disputed opening spot and Kaif, Pujara, Tiwary and Raina will be looking to try and oust the big four in the period of two four day games and three one day matches...good luck.

I really rate Aakash Chopra, his technique is beautiful to watch and each run with him is earned. He also seems to bear the brunt of the opening bowlers and although he does not score at a heavy rate, he seems to often survive till the first bowling change. These days opening attacks include Akhtar/Asif, Anderson/Sidebottom, Clark/Lee and so are starting to become quite formidable again. It will be interesting to see if he plays in the one dayers as he is quite a defensive test batsman.

He has a poor Test record, this is likely due to the fact that his four series have been: two against Australia, one against New Zealand (the one he did well in) and one against Pakistan, hardly easy, he has matured a lot since then though, averaging 80 for his Middlesex based club and 50 for his Indian FC side. Someone with such an impecable technque should be able to convert a FC average (which is 44 btw) well into international cricket...but time will tell.

The bowling is less impressive but still quite strong. Ishant Sharma, still growing and hopefully having corrected the awful spinal twist in his bowling action may hope to be the tall fast bowler than India have wanted for so long. Touching 140kph in Bangladesh it would seem that just an extra yard or two of pace would make him the fastest in India and with fine control over line and length, he will be looking to earn a place in the Indian seam attack, all places are up for grabs as I believe that only Zaheer Khan is an assured seamer in the team. Pankaj Singh was the strike bowler with Pathan in the tri series and constantly outperformed him, him and the young Yo Mahesh will also be looking to break into the team too. Ojha was impressive in the Tri Series and good in the four day games against Zimbabwe and Kenya but he will have to be extraordinary as it seems that both Harbhajan (on the back of fantastic showings for Surrey) and Chawla would be ahead of the pecking order than him. The mysterious but proven at domestic level, Ashraf Makda is my pick to make a storm against his former countrymen and Amit Mishra will look to build on comparisons with Shane Warne by destroying South Africa, just as Warne enjoyed doing time and time again.

Manoj Tiwary looks a good player with a very fine record.
India might want to get him in the team sooner rather than later.

Sharma looks a good bowler from what I've seen of him from under 19 level.

Looks a good A side under Mohammed Kaif.

Day 1: Stumps

India A 354/4 (Chopra 137*, Patel 110, Badrinath 77*, De Wet 2/56)

I hope Parthiv Patel can field because with a fifty and four hundreds in his last five India A innings, he can do little more to get into the India team as a specialist batsman. The same goes for Badrinath who is aiming for a hundred too.

Aakash Chopra did what Aakash Chopra does, he stonewalled in tough conditions until he was 'in' and then played his shots. Luck or no luck, the end result is what matters and a century will be good for him in attempting to force Jaffer out of the Indian team and force himself in in the process.

Unlucky for Kaif and Pujara to get out to what cricinfo said were good deliveries. I do not think this is too bad for Kaif, I believe he has more chance of getting into India as an ODI player than a test one, mainly due to his fielding. The same may go for Raina and explain why he didn't play today, but I doubt that is the case. Tiwary did not score any runs either but I think he scored enough runs in the Ranji Trophy to allow for one bad score against what is (based on my limited knowledge and FC records) a decent South African attack.

They're showing the match Live on NEO Sports at the moment :)

Ojha the left-arm spinner had a close LBW turned down against Coetsee.

India A doing well... :D

Two double-centurions! Tiwary and Kaif failed to get into the runs, though. I hope Tiwary has recovered from his injury.

Badrinath certainly deserves a place in the side after that performance. I do hope he'll be tried in the tests against Pakistan.

Akash Chopra should be hoping he gets another chance here. Chopra and Karthik would make it interesting. Chopra can stonewall the opposition while Karthik can take the risks. If Sehwag comes back, we have the famous Sehwag-Chopra combo back again.

Badrinath certainly deserves a place in the side after that performance. I do hope he'll be tried in the tests against Pakistan.

Lets see if he gets that chance. He has been a consistent performer in domestic cricket. Age is catching up with him, so he needs to be tried out soon.

I would like to see both Patel and Badrinath tried in the test squad, considering the form they've been in of late, but if it ever comes down to picking one of them, that would be reason I would prefer Badrinath over Patel. Parthiv still has time on his side, but Badrinath is approaching the back end of his career. He would be the perfect replacement if one of our three batting stalwarts choose to retire sometime soon.

I saw the highlights on NEO Sports. What a thrashing South Africa A took. And they have some test players/former test players in their side as well...

Except Amit Mishra all the bowlers for India A looked impressive.

Were there any paces (mph/kph) for the India A bowlers?

No, but Ishant Sharma looked quite quick at times. He does have potential to play for India, this fellow.

At least he should play instead of Agarkar, in the name of God...

But Amit Mishra looked like crap. I don't think he has a chance against Piyush Chawla to make it to the Test squad..
