Frank Worrell was a better captain than Waugh and Fleming. Fleming's batting was pretty over-rated as well I think. He was an ok batsman, nothing more than an average Test player, as his average indicates. Heck of alot of talent, but didn't capitalise on it by converting 50's to 100's.
Have you watched Fleming play by any chance over a long period?
Fleming-Astle-Mcmillan were once the most dependable of Kiwis if they are to win a game. And Fleming's capataincy was my 'The Most Favorite' one. Few years before, my first favorite capatain was Fleming.. Second - Vaughan and Third - Smith! But it's changed ofcourse with time. Dhoni's captaincy is what i have started liking over Smith's one.
He was indeed a captain of two semifinalists in WC right? If so, thats not a small thing. And I still remember, in 2003 Wcup, Nz Vs Sa.. Fleming's heroic knock saved Kiwis through D/L method rules(after 34 overs i believe) where the target was around 339 i guess. You know that in those periods, target of above 300 is a huge thing.
Fleming has indeed played a crucial role in Kiwis cricket, but unfortunately they had no luck to turn out as champs. And, Fleming in test level, though he might have less average which Dan was speaking about( I don't know), he is one of the toughest batsmen to get out. Once he settles down, thats it.. he would get firmly rooted like a fevi-stick

I still remember the boring opening partnership on Day 1 Vs SL on lankan soil itself with RR of not even 2RPO. They were some 150-170 for no loss after batting the full Day1. (i am not sure though about the exact total)Indeed the most boring innings I have ever watched!

I was the big fan of Kiwis which had Fleming-Astle-Mcmillan-Parore-Bond-Vettori. They always had more potentials than what the statistics are showing now under Fleming's captaincy!
