Tremlett Tames Sharks on Day 1
15th April 2010
It was a case of two halves for Sussex on day one at Hove facing Surrey. On one half, Matt Prior (76), Ed Joyce (53), and Luke Wright (51) showed their class and international pedigree against a fired up bowling attack.
On the other half Chris Nash (8), Joe Gatting (3), and Yardy (6) have seen Sussex struggling on 273-7 after the first day. Chris Tremlett was pumped up on what looked like the perfect pitch for batting under a sun fit for the beach across the road.
The former England international made the most of the new ball, getting openers Nash and Gatting out early, the former caught by Gary Wilson, the one change in Surrey's lineup from last week's game against Derbyshire, replacing Steve Davies behind the stumps.
Joyce and Prior stabilised things for the home side with a 104 run partnership, reaching lunch at 74-2 and carrying on before Joyce caught a thick edge and was caught in the slips by Rory Hamilton-Brown. He was followed soon after by Prior who tickled one through for Wilson to take his second catch off the bowling of Batty as at Tea the score stood at 168-5.
Things went from bad to worse after the break as Tremlett trapped Yardy in front for his fourth wicket, before Luke Wright came in. The international all-rounder steadied things along with Sussex veteran Murray Goodwin, before Goodwin was given lbw by Nel as Surrey took the new ball.
That new ball was only six overs old when Nel bowled a snorter of a bouncer, which cannoned into new batsman Yasser Arafat's collarbone, causing him to retire hurt, and just before the end of the day Tremlett picked up his 5th wicket of the day, another nick, this time from Wright as Sussex finished the day on 273-7.
