Galvin Takes Over at the Oval
15 March 2010

Surrey_cricket_logo.png

Surrey County Cricket Club have appointed Kevin Galvin as their coach for the upcoming 2010 season.

The Irishman, who had a stop start career which included seven years at the Oval, along with ten England caps before hanging up his boots at the early age of 35 due to a recurring back issue.

Speaking today to ECB TV, Galvin said that the appointment offered him a chance to 'get back into cricket.'

'It's great to be back at my favourite cricket ground in the world. The mix of modern technology with tradition is perfectly balanced at the Oval, which I feel is a reflection of the club itself. I'm hoping to take this team out of the Second Division and back to the top where I feel we belong'

Surrey face Cambridge University in a warm-up game on Saturday April 3rd at the Oval.

Surrey v Cambridge University, warm-up match

Students frustrate Surrey
April 6, 2010

Surrey 506/5 dec. (U. Afzaal 187, M. Beal 2-100) drew with Cambridge UCCE 282 (H. Vernon 61, C. Tremlett 3-52) and 194/7 (A. Dial 44, G. Batty 4-58)

Cambridge-MCCU-v-Surrey---007.jpg

Despite dominating in the batting department, Surrey couldn't come away with a win in their first game of the season against Cambridge University.

A fantastic knock of 187 off 245 deliveries by Usman Afzaal, supported by a century by Michael Brown, 113 (159) and two excellent knocks by Steve Davies 70 (76) and captain Mark Ramprakash 86 (124) saw the hosts eventually declare on 506-5.

Cambridge came in needing a big score in order to avoid the follow on and did well with a partnership of 76 between Harry Vernon and Alan Neville seeing the University side to 120-2. The Surrey bowlers made light work of the Cambridge middle order though, and only a brave 46 by tail-ender Roy Collyer 46* (76) with two sixes afforded some resistance as the visiting side closed on a respectable 282.

That still wasn't enough to avoid the follow on though and new coach Kevin Galvin knew his side needed to take 10 wickets on the final day to win the game. They started well, picking up the wickets of openers Vernon and Marcus Ratcliffe for the loss of 37 runs. Then in came Neville and Aaron Dial, who ate up a lot of time in the middle with a 75 run partnership.

That partnership was enough to secure the draw that Cambridge wanted, and despite losing both men with Surrey attacking more, the result was never really in doubt, even with the loss of two quick wickets at the end.

Galvin's side were the only county team that couldn't get a win against their educated opponents, and they face Derbyshire on Friday who beat Loughboro by an innings and two runs.

In other scores Durham beat the MCC by an innings and 91 runs, Lancashire beat Durham University by an innings and 142 runs, Essex beat Leeds Uni by an innings and one run, Gloucestershire beat Cardiff Uni by an innings and 134 runs, and Northamptonshire beat Cambridge's biggest rivals Oxford by 10 wickets.

Should be a draw from here.

Just a suggestion, I'd be having a summary of the days play or something along those lines. The summary scorecards are good but it's just not enough imo. Just not engaging enough. Your story though so do what you want.

Thanks for the feedback Hedger. Yeah might be a good idea, just a bit lazy I was but will have a full match report soon :)

Surrey v Derbyshire, County Championship D2

Amazing Afzaal Cancels Out Romping Rogers
April 13, 2010

Surrey 593 (U. Afzaal 176, T Groenewald 3-89) drew with Derbyshire 482 (C. Rogers 160, G. Batty 5-91) and 266-7 (W. Durston 63, G. Batty 3-84)
Scorecard

115986.2.jpg

Excellent centuries from Usman Afzaal and Chris Rogers were the highlights of a bore draw at the Oval in the first game of the County Championship.

On a flat wicket the away side won the toss and inevitably chose to bat first and openers Rogers and Garry Park made light work of seeing off the new ball, reaching 100 without the loss of a wicket, and Derbyshire were on 174 before Park poked at a ball outside his off-stump and Andre Nel was there to catch at short leg.

Rogers was in fine form though and reached his century soon after, but lost Wes Durton and Greg Smith in quick succession, both trapped lbw by som fine bowling by Chris Schofield. That brought in Paul Borrington, the 21 year old didn't feature in Derbyshire's warm up game against Loughborough University and was keen to start his season on the right foot. He and Rogers added 34 runs together before the latter was eventually clean bowled by Gareth Batty on 160.

Borrington battled on well though, and saw team-mates John Sadler and Lee Goddard bowled by Schofield and Nel respectively before Jonathan Clare arrived at the crease with the score at 313-6. Both Clare and Borrington surpassed the half-century mark, before the youngster eventually nicked one off the bowling of Chris Tremlett for Steve Davies to bag behind the stumps, ending a partnership of 120.

Gareth Batty was the pick of Surrey's bowlers, and he had Clare caught by Hamilton-Brown before trapping Mark Footitt lbw, and he ended the Derbyshire innings with his 5th wicket, that of Groenewald also caught at short leg by Hamilton-Brown as the away side closed on 482.

The home side knew a good start was needed in order to have any chance of gaining the upper hand, and Usman Afzaal was more than up to the challenge. The Pakistani born batsman put on 120 with Michael Brown as a first wicket partnership with both reaching 50 before Brown was given lbw off the bowling of Footitt. Steve Davies got in and got out again for 10 off 48 before Mark Ramprakash came to the crease.

At 40 years old Ramprakash is playing in his 23rd season in County Cricket. The two older men in Surrey's lineup showed absolutely no signs of their age as they started to pick apart the Derbyshire attack. Afzaal reached his century before rain brought the second day to a close after tea.

As the third day started both batsman didn't falter one bit, and overall the two added 208 on their 3rd wicket partnership before Afzaal was finally bowled by Tom Lungley, having added 176 runs in over four and a half hours at the crease.

Ramprakash reached his half century with Rory Hamilton-Brown as they continued the good work, adding 40 before 'Ramps' was caught in the deep by Greg Smith off Groenewald's bowling.

The South African got Chris Schofield out next for a paltry five, before Hamilton-Brown was bowled by Clare on 82. From there only Gareth Batty (46) and Chris Tremlett (33*) added any score of note as the home side finished on 593 all out.

With little less than a day left and Surrey leading by 111 the result was all but decided as the players took to the field under a distinctly London grey sky. Derbyshire lost park early for a duck, and Rogers was gone having made 15 as the away side were reeling slightly at 30-2.

They needed just one partnership to stabilise the innings and steer the side to a draw, and they got it. Smith and Durston scored runs, but more importantly ate up time in a partnership worth 84 before Smith was bowled by Batty. Durston managed to get to the 50 mark but was out soon after having nicked one through to the wicked-keeper off a vicious Tremlett bouncer.

Each one of Derbyshire's players managed to get in and eat up some time with Lee Goddard, as the 27 year old managed to stay in until the end, and despite a few late wickets by Batty, Derbyshire kept three wickets in hand to earn themselves a draw.

Surrey took ten points from the game while Derbyshire took nine. They face Leicestershire at home while Surrey travel to Hove to face Sussex, who comfortably beat Glamorgan by eight wickets.

Tremlett Tames Sharks on Day 1
15th April 2010

It was a case of two halves for Sussex on day one at Hove facing Surrey. On one half, Matt Prior (76), Ed Joyce (53), and Luke Wright (51) showed their class and international pedigree against a fired up bowling attack.

On the other half Chris Nash (8), Joe Gatting (3), and Yardy (6) have seen Sussex struggling on 273-7 after the first day. Chris Tremlett was pumped up on what looked like the perfect pitch for batting under a sun fit for the beach across the road.

The former England international made the most of the new ball, getting openers Nash and Gatting out early, the former caught by Gary Wilson, the one change in Surrey's lineup from last week's game against Derbyshire, replacing Steve Davies behind the stumps.

Joyce and Prior stabilised things for the home side with a 104 run partnership, reaching lunch at 74-2 and carrying on before Joyce caught a thick edge and was caught in the slips by Rory Hamilton-Brown. He was followed soon after by Prior who tickled one through for Wilson to take his second catch off the bowling of Batty as at Tea the score stood at 168-5.

Things went from bad to worse after the break as Tremlett trapped Yardy in front for his fourth wicket, before Luke Wright came in. The international all-rounder steadied things along with Sussex veteran Murray Goodwin, before Goodwin was given lbw by Nel as Surrey took the new ball.

That new ball was only six overs old when Nel bowled a snorter of a bouncer, which cannoned into new batsman Yasser Arafat's collarbone, causing him to retire hurt, and just before the end of the day Tremlett picked up his 5th wicket of the day, another nick, this time from Wright as Sussex finished the day on 273-7.

Sharks Bite Back
16th April 2010

Some incredible bowling and terrible batting have meant that despite a good first day, Surrey start day three following on. Four wickets from Murtaza Hussain and three apiece for Ragheb Aga and Corey Collymore have saw Surrey collapse to 142 all out.

Sussex started the day slightly behind in the running, 273-7 and despite the bowlers adding a few runs they closed on what looked like an under par 303 on a good batting pitch.

There must be something besides salt in the air down at Hove, as Surrey's first innings was in stark contrast to a good 593 made against Derbyshire in their last game. Last week's man of the match Usman Afzaal followed his opening partner Michael Brown early on, as Surrey were 22 for 2. New man Gary Wilson looked promising, adding 49 runs with Mark Ramprakash to the total before being clean bowled by Aga. Ramprakash was the only Surrey player to even challenge a milestone, reaching 41 before being trapped lbw by Hussain having seen the last genuine batsman left, Rory Hamilton-Brown depart for 12, his timbers also rattled by Aga.

At this stage Surrey were 91-5, and needed a miracle from the tail end in order to salvage some pride. Any kind of decent partnership would have done to avoid the follow-on, which was becoming more and more of a reality. Chris Jordan made 18 and Andre Nel hit two sixes on his way to 14, but Hussain and Collymore made light work, wrapping up the innings and affording Michael Yardy the rare opportunity to enforce the follow-on.

Brown and Afzaal came out needing to stay in with light fading against a new ball, and the pair made a much better effort second time around, reaching the end of the day together having added 41 runs.

Surrey's Rescue on Day 3
17th April 2010

With Surrey's back to the wall, their batsman have risen to the challenge, digging their side out of a massive hole and getting them back into the game as everything's set up for a fantastic fourth day.

Having started the third day on 41-0 in their follow on attempt, and Michael Brown and Usman Afzaal returned to their form so far this season, reaching 100 together. They kept plugging away, reaching lunch at 138-0; and having already made 187 and 176 so far this season Afzaal moved onto his third century in as many games. It looked like the pair were taking Surrey to 200 before Afzaal was trapped lbw by Luke Wright. In came Mark Ramprakash and he was building a solid partnership with Brown before Brown was bowled by part-time bowler Ed Joyce for 72.

Irishman Wilson joined Ramprakash in the middle, and the two set about chasing down what defecit was left. The pair passed Sussex's first innings score, with Ramprakash reaching his 50. It looked like Wilson was going to join him before he was bowled by Hussain with only a few minutes left in the final session.

So as it stands, Surrey lead by 191 runs having lost only three wickets, and it will be interesting to see when they decide to declare tomorrow.

Elsewhere Derbyshire lead Lancashire by 21 runs with the Foxes six wickets down in their second innings. Middlesex lead Glamorgan by 84 runs with five wickets left in their second innings, while Northamptonshire need 324 runs to win on the final day with eight wickets remaining.

Two games were resolved in the first division, with Lancashire beating Wawrickshire by nine wickets, and Nottinghamshire beating Kent by eight wickets

Sussex v Surrey, County Championship D2

Disastrous Declaration Sees Sussex Win
April 18 2010

Sussex 303 (M. Prior 76, C. Tremlett 6-62) and 253-6 (J. Gatting 96, G. Batty 5-81) beat Surrey 142 (M. Ramprakash 41, M. Hussain 4-43) and 413-6 dec. (U. Afzaal 134, M. Hussain 2-131) by 4 wickets
Scorecard

8291448752_3b77e44a37.jpg

A misjudged day four declaration paved the way for Sussex to grab a comfortable victory at Hove in their LV County Championship Division Two game.

Surrey headed into the final day 191 runs to the good but having capitulated in the first innings the Hove crowd weren't sure how the away side would manage the final day. Badly it turned out, as just over an hour into proceedings the Oval outfit declared, leading by only 250 and leaving plenty of time for the away side to chase down the score.

That's exactly what they did and never looked in danger of not taking away the full compliment of points. An excellent second innings by Joe Gatting and a fantastic all-round performance by Man of the Match Matt Prior were the highlights of a win, which in all honesty was far easier than first expected.

Sussex won the toss and chose to bat on the opening day, and despite decent innings from Matt Prior (76), Ed Joyce (53) and Luke Wright (51) they would have felt disappointed leaving the field early on the second day having been gotten all out for 303. One nasty incident on the first day was Yasser Arafat having to retire hurt, having taken a nasty ball on the collarbone from Andre Nel, he'll be out for the next three weeks with a fractured collarbone.

They were feeling a whole lot better at the end of the second day though, having incredibly enforced the follow on to a Surrey side who, despite Mark Ramprakash's 41, were skittled for 142 all out.

The one bright note of the second day for Surrey was the opening partnership between Michael Brown and Usman Afzaal; worth 42 at the close of play, it finally earned the away side 194 runs before Afzaal was eventually dismissed for 134 runs, the highest score of the innings.

Brown added a further 41 with Ramprakash before being bowled by Ed Joyce, Ramprakash added a further 100 with Gary Wilson before the Irishman was bowled by Murtaza Hussain one run short of his half century. Rory Hamilton-Brown and Chris Jordan were lost soon after, before Surrey declared on 413-6 having passed the 250 lead mark.

That declaration marked the beginning of the end for Surrey who took just 3 points from the game. Sussex take an early lead in the division with their 22 points and face Gloucestershire, while Surrey take on bottom of the table Worcestershire next Wednesday.

Elsewhere Derbyshire beat Leicestershire by 10 wickets, Gloucestershire beat Northamptonshire by 232 runs, Glamorgan drew with Middlesex; while at New Road Worcestershire beat Leeds University by an innings and 72 runs.

Choudhry the hero as Worcestershire stabilize

Worcestershire 360-7

By Rob Smyth at the Oval

Deft Touch: Choudhry hit an unbeaten 178 on the first day

A sublime knock by Shaaiq Choudhry saw a poor start by Worcestershire regained to get towards a competitive score. Surrey lost the toss yet again and were sent into field on an excellent pitch. That didn't deter openers Andre Nel and Chris Tremlett though, who took the early wickets of Daryl Mitchell, Alex Kervezee and Vickram Solanki before skittling Ben Smith for a duck, as Worcestershire were reeling on 36-4.

That brought Skakib Al Hasan and Choudhry to the crease, and they added almost 100 runs before lunch came. After the break the pair began to open up and play shots as Surrey brought on spinners Batty and Schofield in an attempt to break the partnership. In the end, it took the opener Nel, back for his second spell, to trap Al Hasan lbw to finally end a fifth wicket partnership worth 142.

Barry Robertson stuck around for fifty minutes to allow Rotherham native Choudry to add further runs before he was given out lbw to Schofield. Imran Arif lasted about the same amount of time, adding 17 before he was caught and bowled by Batty.

Things are looking good for Worcestershire heading into the second day, with an unbroken partnership off 96 between Ben Cox and Choudhry, with the latter continuing the second day on 178.

Hey, good going man. Loving the neat and quick updates. That declaration was bizarre and cost Surrey the game. Worcestershire are bottom of the table but, they already have 360 on the board after being 36 for 4 which is a remarkable comeback. Let's see how Surrey progress from here on.

Also, those summary cards don't look too good. You could use different color than that greenish shade.

It was my first ever scorecard on PS. Good old days, those!

Thanks very much man! Decided to scrap the scorecards for the moment, the effort they take isn't worth it. Will use them for international games :) The colour was supposed to match the colour of the County Championship but it doesn't look the best, you're right

Surrey Slipping on Second Day

Worcestershire 384, Surrey 174-6
By Rob Smith at the Oval
Published 18:04 GMT 22 APR 2010

darly-mitchell-gareth-1120895.jpg

It was Worcestershire's day again at the Oval

Despite losing Shaaiq Choudhry very early in the day, Worcestershire will see the second day as a success, needing only four runs to knock Surrey out and enforce their second follow on in as many games. Leading by 210 runs, the Royals now go into the third day most likely spending the entire day in the field; they will hope to keep up their good work so far and see the game off in the third day if possible.

Surrey's batting lineup, which again has failed at the first attempt, will have to be a lot sharper on the third day if they are to survive in this game, hard to stomach as a Lions supporter having had the Royals at 36-4 in their first innings.

Having played a day-long incredible innings on the first day, Shaaiq Choudhry must have lacked something in his breakfast this morning, out on the third ball chipping a tame drive to Chris Schofield off the bowling of Andre Nel, the South African's fifth wicket. Choudhry's partner Ben Cox was out soon after, before Imran Arif and Matthew Mason were swept up as Worcestershire closed on 384 all out.

Surrey's first innings started solidly, openers Michael Brown and Usman Afzaal survived until lunch, and got past 50 before Brown was caught by Choudhry off the bowling of Shakhib Al Hasan. The very next ball his partner was gone, Afzaal run out as the home crowd groaned, the former England international had made three centuries in his last four innings and was in fine nick heading into the game.

Things only went from bad to worse for the Kennington side after tea. Ramprakash, Wilson and Hamilton-Brown departed cheaply, the last having put on a stand of 50 runs which promised far more.

Schofield was leading the partnership with Chris Jordan and the pair looked like they were going to take Surrey to the end of the day, but the final ball of the evening summed up the home side's game so far, as Schofield was caught by 18 year old Barry Robertson off Matthew Mason as the hosts closed on 174-6
