frankly looking to the existing quality - ESPN Star don't have a rival here in India...but I am seriously worried by the amount of money they are paying the BCCI for the rights...it only means that whichever channel gets the rights will try to make up for it by throwing in more ads than cricket...

Zee's initial proposal looked good because they seemed to offer a dedicated effort to telecast cricket matches in India and also the first class matches - which in my view are much better to watch than some minnow vs strong match...ESPN Star I don't think can afford such a proposal to telecast all the first class matches coz the day consists of only 24 hrs...but Zee's lack of experience and good commentators will make them poor starters...I sincerely hope its ESPN Star for intl matches but Zee should be given the chance to telecast the FC matches...esp. with the Ranji finals coming up and with the introduction of fresh pitches - the matches are getting interesting too...

you never know with espn ,they might even get a new channel for india to telecast the FC.
coz the money being put in is around $308 mn.
Any guesses about how much will be put in to the rights when they next come up for grabs in 2008-2009?
$ 500 mn?
Any how we'll get to know on the 17th feb who gets it.

ESPN Star is by far the best sports channel in India. But thats because the other ones are pure junk. The ESPN Star commentary panel are highly biased and at times get very irritating. Besides I remember they had included useless programmes like Shaz and Waz, where they had ladies who knew little about the sport live on air along side Ravi Shastri and Wasim Akram. They even had filmstars up there, talking about anything but cricket.

Their stats and analysis are good, but so are that of Ten Sports. Nothing great about that. Sky in the UK and Channel 9 in Australia top the list when it comes to pre,post and ingame analysis with all their latest technologies.

The Commentary team of ESPN Star Sports have some really good names, but are highly biased towards the home side (i.e India). Its only the foreign imports like Boycott and Wilkins who do a decent and unbiased job.

But despite of all these -ve points, they are still the best in India. So I guess I would be very surprised if they did not win the bid to telecast the Indian home matches.

Ten Sports - Good analysis, but still not as lively and interactive as ESPN. Good commentators with an unbiased look to the matches.

Doordarshan - Horrible production team. They do manage to get a few decent commentators, but they really arent good enough to handle any international cricket match.

Sony Max - well probably the worst option. They telecast the ICC competion matches, but have a terrible production team, commentary team, and useless analysis.

Zee - will be their first entry into the world of sports, so cant say anything about them.

people would not have liked it.
we like a bit biased comments.
yeah and even boycott's far too much biased towards india.

I don't mind Boycott although sometimes he does get on my nerves. I have not seen any of the Sky productions so I cannot comment on it. But I really don't mind ESPN/Star. I think they're pretty damn good. Hahaha... I think I would die if DD got the rights again. Another hike in DD SPorts and Fair & Lovely fourth umpire. Oh God!
