Defending a target of 165 runs on a hard track in a Twenty20 match is never easy so it's important for South Africa to get a good start with the ball and pick up a couple of quick wickets to put some pressure on the West Indies. Chris Gayle and Devon Smith were the opening batsmen for the West Indies. Chris Gayle is a destructive opener and he can smash the ball to all parts of the ground right from the word go and South Africa will be looking to pick up his wicket early, otherwise they might see the match slip away from their hands. On the other hand,Devon Smith is a promising young batsman and the team plan will be that he should play sensible cricket and take West Indies into a good position without losing a wicket in the first few overs. But the should keep an eye on the required run rate as well.
Shaun Pollock was ready with the new ball with Chris Gayle on strike. Pollock started with an overpitched ball and Gayle was never going to miss that opportunity. Gayle will make sure that anything pitched inside his half was surely going to the boundary but Smith made a great attempt at the boundary to stop a certain four and restricting the batsmen only to two runs. Pollock then bowled a slower delivery outside the offstump and invited Gayle to drive through the offside. But it only resulted in giving a simple catch to Andre Nel who made a big blunder of the catch. The South African's were not happy with the effort from Nel and straight away Smith made some changes in the field. Pollock gave just 3 runs in his 1st over but it would have been 3 runs for the loss of 1 wicket only if Nel was alert at that moment.
But within no time at all, South Africa got their 1st wicket. Ntini was the man who took the wicket with just the 3rd ball of his opening over. Devon Smith driving thorugh the covers but straight to AB de Villiers who took the catch in the same position where Nel had dropped Gayle in the previous over. Devon Smith was out for 0 with West Indies on 8/1.
With the fall of Smith's wicket Marlon Samuels came out to the middle.
Samuels was enjoying his stay at the non-strikers end as Gayle smashed another four off Pollock to get the scoreboard moving along. But even after getting smashed for couple of boundaries Pollock concentrated on his good line and length and was always targeting the stumps. Soon he was rewarded with Gayle's wicket as Gayle tried to play across the line and was trapped in front, with absolutely no doubt in Billy Bowden's mind but to give that one out. South Africa got the important wicket of Gayle and now the match has become wide open for both the teams and a few more wickets will put South Africa in the drivers seat.
But still lots of batting to come for the West Indies as their captain Ramnaresh Sarwan joins Samuels in the middle.
West Indies are under bit of pressure and now they need to build up a partnership. But South Africa are bowling really well and Smith is doing a good job with his field placings, making it very difficult for the West Indies to score runs.
