Windows 7

Of course I have a right to complain. You have no right to talk! No one on this forum knows you. I'm not some kind of hi-tech computer person, so from a normal computer users point of view, Vista is annoying so shut the hell up.

Calm down mate i get you but that's quite harsh to say to someone

Probably wasn't the case in the States when Vista was launched and certainly isn't the case now. I built a system in the early days of vista and had 2gig, now running with 4gig (The original 2gig is on the shelf as its too slow now). Memory is cheap as chips at the moment I for one wouldnt have tried running vista with 1gig anyway. It is a bit wasteful, to require that much memory, but then if you want flashing bells and whistles on an operating system you have to accept it I guess.
With Moore's Law still holding true, programmers these days (myself probably included) are not optimizing their code to have as small a footprint as possible. This was obviously an important part of software a decade back since disk space and memory were expensive, but now with an almost infinite amount of these available (especially with the advent of 64-bit systems), no one really goes through that last iteration of optimizing anymore.

Nope, its faster and cheaper to buy more hardware these days. Moore's law certainly does work. I build a system with 2gigs of ram. 18 months later 4gigs is cheaper than the 2gigs. In 18 months time 8gigs will be cheaper, then 16 etc etc. But it still grates a bit that programming has become so sloppy. Most probably because the last time I did any programming 2k was more commonplace than 2gig ;)

I don't see why you are disagreeing with me when I'm saying the same thing...

It comes down to being user-friendly. Which Vista is certainly not. Initially I used to think its a matter of time before I adjust, but even till today, my every experience with XP is so much smoother than Vista.

I agree with Kev's theory about bringing in something new, updating and changing it, and then disposing it altogether when the need arises. No offence, but Microsoft has no significant competition. They can do it all at their own pace.

Well, for anyone who didn't know, Microsoft has released a public beta of Windows 7. Anyone can download and install it on their computer (hopefully a spare computer).

The beta was initially supposed to have a 2.5 million cap, but after servers crashed, Microsoft decided to make it open to everyone (observe and learn, Apple!). They have both 32-bit and 64-bit editions. I'm going to install it on a virtual machine on a USB drive about an hour from now. :)
