Bisping Returns to Winnings Ways with Win over Wandy

bispingwin_280x390_502995a.jpg

Manchester was the willing host of the latest UFC event as UFC 105 rolled into town. The arena was packed to the rafters creating an intense atmosphere, especially when one of the many British fighters was on show. The main event of the evening, Brit favourite Michael Bisping vs Wanderlei Silva tore the roof off, especially when it was announced that it was Bisping leaving with the victory. Antonio Rogerio Nogueira also recieved some major support after he left his UFC debut with a victory to his name.

Michael Bisping declared in his pre-fight interviews that the loss to Dan Henderson had inspired him to up his level of performance even more, and it was certainly on show in the first round. Bisping started with a few nice, crisp punches, before closing the distance on Wanderlei and showcasing his further improved wrestling ability. He secured a takedown on Silva early, and then went to work on the ground, moving first into side control before securing the mount late in the round. Just before the buzzer, in an attempt to sweep Bisping from the bottom, Wanderlei ended up just giving up his back; The Count was unable to capitalise on it though, as the buzzer saved Silva.

Round 2 was more of the same. Wanderlei managed to keep the fight standing for a little longer, but was unable to fire off any real offence, only countering the blows he recieved from Bisping. The round ended, with Bisping having secured a takedown, moving to mount and firing off more unanswered ground and pound. The 3rd round again saw a Bisping takedown resulting in him securing the mount. Wanderlei again tried to sweep, but only succeeded in giving up his back. Bisping tried to sink in a rear naked choke, but Silva successfully got out of it and ended up in a good position.

With Silva in side control Bisping had to move swiftly, and he did, showing his impressive ability to get from the bottom to his feet. The round eventually came to an end with the fight on the feet and Wanderlei landing a counter punch. The judges had to score the fight, and they all agreed on a score of 30-27 in favour of Michael The Count Bisping. His career is back on the right tracks!

Earlier in the evening Antonio Rogerio Nogueira defeated fellow Brazilian Luiz Cane. The fight was dominated by 'Little Nog' both standing up and then on the ground. Nogueira eventually got Cane down to the ground, transitioned to side control before securing a nasty Kimura arm lock. Cane had no option but to tap, giving Nogueira a victory in his UFC Debut.

Before Bisping's victory, it was an up and down evening for the Brit fighters. Dan Hardy was defeated by Mike Swick by decision whereas James Wilks, Ross Pearson and Andre Winner all secured victories.

UFC 106: Lesnar vs Carwin Announced; TUF Heavyweights Card and Big Name UFC Signing!

brock-lesnar-9.jpg

In a Press Conference held today by UFC President Dana White, the full fight card for the upcoming UFC 106 event was announced. The card will be headlined by UFC Heavyweight Champion Brock Lesnar as he takes on heavy hitting challenger Shane Carwin. The card will also see the return of a UFC favourite, Tito Ortiz as he returns to the Octagon for the first time since a back injury he sustained in 2008. Ortiz will take on MMA Veteran Mark Coleman. It's set to be a fantastic night for the fans.

The Main Event is what stirred the biggest reaction, with Lesnar's first fight since his domination of Frank Mir announced. Lesnar is now 4-1 in his MMA career, with his only loss already avenged. In only his 4th MMA fight he fought Randy Couture for the UFC Heavyweight Title and pulled off a mega upset to take the belt. Since then he's had 1 successful defence, beating Frank Mir via TKO in the 2nd Round.

Lesnar's opponent will be up and comer Shane Carwin. Carwin is 3-0 in the UFC with none of his opponents getting out of the first round. His UFC Debut came against Christian Wellisch and was finished inside a minute, with Carwin securing a knockout just 44 seconds into the fight. Neil Wain was his second opponent, and he lasted just 1:31, losing by TKO and then in Carwin's last fight he beat a very big name in Gabriel Gonzaga, coming back from being badly rocked early in the 1st round to knock Gonzaga out cold with a heavy left hand.

The war of words has already begun, with insults flying left and right. This fight is going to be a real slug fest. The fight will take place at UFC 106: Lesnar vs Carwin and will be held at the Mandalay Bay Events Center on November 21st in Las Vegas. Sure to be one heck of a night of fights!

The Ultimate Fighter Heavyweights Tournament Card

The 2nd big announcement from UFC President Dana White was the announcement of the full fight card for the TUF Heavyweights: Team Rampage vs Team Rashad Tournament event. The show will be headlined by a #1 Contender fight in the Middleweight division between Dan Henderson and Nate Marquardt. Also included on the card alongside the tournament itself is a fight between returning Karo Parisyan and veteran Frank Trigg.

UFC Sign Gegard Mousasi

gegard_mousasi.jpg

The Final Announcement from Dana White at today's Press Conference was to officially present Gegard Mousasi to the press as a UFC fighter. Mousasi has signed a 6 fight deal with the UFC after negotations between the UFC and Mousasi's management M-1. The move is seen as a positive step in terms of negotiations with M-1, who own the rights to Heavyweight superstar Fedor Emelianenko. White will be hopeful that with Mousasi on board, he'll be able to set up a deal with Fedor once his Strikeforce contract comes to an end.

As for Mousasi. He's seen as the future of the Light-Heavyweight division, and at the tender age of 24 already has a great deal of experience. Mousasi is 26-2-1 in his MMA career, and has already secured victories over the likes of Renato Sobral, Melvin Manhoef, Denis Kang, Mark Hunt and others. It will be very interesting to see where Mousasi goes in his UFC career, and his first fight is looking set to be at either UFC 108 or UFC 109.

Lesnar Overcomes Carwin Challenge; Ortiz Returns With Victory

Brock_Lesnar_652988a.jpg

Brock Lesnar's 2nd defence of his UFC Heavyweight Championship ended in victory after he overcame the challenge of Shane Carwin via 2nd Round TKO. Many MMA purists were backing Carwin's heavy hands to lead to victory, but Lesnar made another massive statement to the MMA community with the win over Carwin. UFC 106 also saw the return of The Huntington Beach Bad Boy Tito Ortiz as he took on UFC veteran Mark Coleman. Ortiz didn't show any signs of ring rust beating Coleman via submission in the 1st Round.

The first round of the Main Event was a big shock, as it was Carwin who took the fight to the ground from the off. He went straight in for a takedown, maybe to prove his claims that a Division 2 wrestler can dominate a Division 1 champion. After abit of a scramble, Lesnar defended the takedown, but Carwin did eventually get Lesnar to the ground with a single leg trip. Once on the ground Carwin tried to go to work with punches and strikes. Lesnar did a fantastic job of covering up and preventing Carwin from posturing up though, and didn't really take any shots of note. The round was definitely taken by Carwin though, as he was in top position for the entirity of the first round.

The 2nd round started just as the fans expected the 1st would, with Lesnar being the one shooting in for the takedown. His takedown attempt was far more successful than Carwin's in the 1st, getting him down with ease. Brock then went to work from guard, with Carwin trying to lock in a few triangle choke attempts. Lesnar defended the submissions well, before finding a gap and transitioning to side control.

Lesnar was now in the position he found himself in before finishing Frank Mir, and fired off a few shots on Carwin. Lesnar wasn't done there though, and showed fantastic Jiu-Jitsu in transitioning from side control to mount. From here, he showed excellent control and balance before laying down some vicious ground and pound. Carwin just couldn't defend the massive blows from Lesnar, and once a cut was opened up above Carwin's left eye, the fight was all but over and 1 punch later Herb Dean jumped in and stopped the fight, giving Lesnar a TKO win in the 2nd Round. A brilliant performance from the Champion in the 2nd round.

UFC 106 also saw the return of big star Tito Ortiz after a long lay off with back surgery. Ortiz looked very much back to his best as he ended his fight with Mark Coleman in the 1st round. Ortiz started the fight on the back-foot as Coleman used his wrestling to secure a takedown. Coleman wasn't able to lay down any attacks though, and it was only a matter of time before Ortiz did something to turn the fight; and turn the fight he did. 3 minutes into the 1st Round, Ortiz used good wrist control to isolate Coleman's right arm, before locking in a tight Triangle Choke. Coleman had to tap, and after 3 minutes of the 1st round it was over.

Elsewhere, Paul Daley made it 2-0 in his UFC career with a devestating KO victory over former Welterweight Champion Matt Hughes. Dustin Hazelett continued his winning streak also, with a 3 consecutive UFC win, securing a 2nd round submission victory over Martin Kampmann. Sean Sherk and Gabriel Gonzaga also recorded impressive victories.

UFC 107: Penn vs Sanchez Announced

UFC President Dana White today announced the full fight card for the UFC 107 event. The event, due to be held in Memphis at the FedExForum on December 12th will be headlined by a Lightweight Title fight between current champion BJ Penn and Ultimate Fighter 1 contestant, Diego 'Nightmare' Sanchez.

Penn is coming off an impressive submission victory over Kenny Florian at UFC 101, and will be looking to perform as impressively against challenger Diego Sanchez. BJ Penn has looked a new animal since his 2nd loss to Georges St-Pierre, and is training harder than ever, and is as detirmined as ever to become the best fighter in the world; and a 3rd straight title defence would put him in a very dominant position in his division.

Diego Sanchez is coming off a decision victory over Clay Guida, in what was one of the most exciting fights in UFC history. He's 2-0 in his time at Lightweight, with wins over Guida and Joe Stevenson, both fights winning the Fight of the Night award. Sanchez started his UFC career on the cast of the first series of The Ultimate Fighter; winning the Middleweight competition with a win in the finale against Penn's last opponent Kenny Florian. He's since gone 9-2 in the UFC and a win over Penn would definitely be the high point of his career so far.

Also on the card is a fight between the Ultimate Fighter Heavyweight Coaches Quinton 'Rampage' Jackson and Rashad Evans. These 2 guys have been chomping at the bit to get at eachother, and they will have the chance to do so at UFC 107. UFC President Dana White announced that the winner of this fight will be next in line for a shot at the Light Heavyweight Title. It's sure to be an exciting battle.

In what has been described as one of the most stacked cards in UFC history, UFC 107 also features fights between Forrest Griffin and in his last UFC appearance, Chuck 'The Iceman' Liddell. The fight is seen as a passing of the torch amongst journalists, with Griffin going up against his coach from the 1st series of the Ultimate Fighter. The fight will bring an end to the superb career of Liddell, who in his time in the UFC has become the most popular fighter in the world. A win for Griffin in this fight would be a real career boost, and get him back on the right tracks after his loss to Anderson Silva at UFC 101.

UFC 107 will take place at the FedExForum in Memphis, Tennessee on December 12th. Make sure to check your local listings for PPV details.
