Trescothick stakes claim for World XI place
Marcus Trescothick batted with graft and style to guide the World XI reserves to a solid total in the first game of the World XI tour. Asked to open the batting with Pakistan big hitter Sahid Afridi, Trescothick looked at ease against the Windies opening pace duo of Best and Edwards. Best opened with a maiden, but in his next over Trescothick hit some big fours straight over Tino's head, unsettling the bowler. Edwards bowled some nice lines, and got rewards with the early wickets of Afridi (caught and bowled), and Sangakkara (lbw for a duck). Chris Gayle and Ian Bradshaw came on at first change, and continued Edwards good work. Gibbs failed to pick a Bradshaw slower ball, and hit it straight into the bowlers hands, and Graham Thorpe then edged one behind to Jacobs. Trescothick passed his 50 with a sublime straight drive off Gayle, but he was out almost immediately, clean bowled by a Gayle's 'doosra'. Andy Symonds and Lance Klusener steadied the ship, putting on 50 runs. The World XI finished with a solid score, but Brian Lara thinks the game is winnable. "We aren't too downbeat" said the legendary left hander. "This game can be won; we just need to bat with our heads. We have plenty of depth with guys like Sarwan coming in at 6, and Hinds at 8, so we don't need to panic if we lose a few wickets, just keep our heads. 20 overs is more than it may seem."

Lara smashes the Windies to victory!
Brian Lara hit a magnificent 50 to get the Windies off to a winning start against the World XI, even if it was the reserves. Matching the feat set by Trescothick in the first innings, Lara treated the bowlers with contempt, his 50 coming off only 34 deliveries.

Things got off to a reasonable start for the World XI players, hopeful of making the full World XI when that is selected. Brett Lee and Jason Gillespie tied down Chris Gayle with their pace and accuracy, and Gillespie finally got his man when a frustrated Gayle, clearly conscious of the run rate, tried to play a leg side shot to ball that was angling away from the left hander, and just nipped off the seam at around 93mph. Gayle edged it straight into the safe hands of Herschelle Gibbs at first slip. However, Lara and Chanderpaul steadied the ship, and set up the victory. Warne and Razzaq came on to bowl, and while Warne did OK, Razzaq didn't cause the Windies the trouble he caused them in the World Cup. Razzaq can be a very tricky bowler to face, with his 95mph deliveries constantly being mixed up with 60mph slower balls. However, Lara and Chanderpaul weren't backing off today, smashing him all over the ground, including a huge six from Lara, hooking a Razzaq shorter ball.

The next bowling change was strange, but somehow brought reward. Graham Thorpe came on to bowl some dibbly-dobbler medium pace, much to the amusement of the West Indies team in the pavillion. However, the smiles were soon wiped off their faces, as Chanderpaul misread just how slow Thorpe actually is, and scooped one straight back into the bowlers hands! Out, just one run short of a half century. Lara then set about to avenge his friends wicket by smashing Thorpe all over the show. Thorpe ended up with terrible figures, going for 38 off 2 overs. Andy Symonds also couldn't keep the economy down, and the Windies were poised for victory. Warne brought himself back on to bowl the 17th over, but a Brian Lara four to the cover boundary brought up his 50, and also the victory for the Windies.

Kumar Sangakarra can only look on in amazement as Brian Lara targets the dismal medium pace of Graham Thorpe.

Teams named for final warmup game

The World XI made several changes to their team for the second warmup game of the World XI's tour to the West Indies. Afridi, Sangakkara, Thorpe, Razzaq, Lee, Gillespie and even the great Shane Warne have all been left out of the new look team. In their places are several players hoping to make an impression and grab a place on the final World XI team. Openers Matthew Hayden and Virender Sehwag come in to boost a batting lineup that already featues Gibbs, Symonds and Trescothick (who made a 50 in the 20/20 game). The experienced Andy Flower replaces Sangakkara as the teams wicketkeeper, while the new bowling attack features England paceman Steve Harmison, South African star Makhaya Ntini and New Zealand spinner Daniel Vettori. Lance Klusener keeps his place, but Abdul Razzaq is replaced by Shaun Pollock in the final All-rounder spot. Shaun Pollock will also captain the side.

At the team's press conference, Pollock was quick to point out that he didn't see this as demotion, and that he feels this is just a chance to show the selectors what he can do. "Leading the side will be fun, we have a lot of great players who can win any game on their own. There is a lot of talk about me and Matthew (Hayden) appearing in this game, people are saying that this means we are out of the World XI team. But that's not true. The selectors are simply asking us to prove what we can do, and I don't have a problem with that. Playing for the World XI team is an honour, not a devine right. My aim is to win the game, and then be selected for the One Dayers coming up".

Brian Lara was in an upbeat mood following the 20/20 win, but refused to comment on the team selection for the West Indies. "The selectors choose the team, not me", although he added "Sylvester Joseph is a good player, he deserves a chance batting in the middle order. It's good to have competition for places". The bowlers are also changed for the game, but Lara said that "everyone deserves a go before the series, especially as we have so many good quick bowlers in the squad". On the World XI reserves team that has been picked, Lara said that he feels the Windies will have to be at their very best to win. "They have class in every area, right through the team. They are fighting for places, and thats a dangerous thing to be up against. We know they can play, but we have to concentrate on ourselves, and what we can do."

These are warmup games against the World XI reserves... the actual World XI games are down to the selectors, and I'm sure Sachin will feature in the series! Let me know if your interested in being a selector Surender, there may be a spot available.
