Ponting Triple Hundred Denies Australia Victory

106841.jpg

Ponting's 300 was magical, he didn't present any chances to England as he pummelled them to all parts of the WACA

The third test from the WACA was always destined for a draw and thats what the cricketing gods gave the fans. Australian captain Ricky Ponting peeled off one of the greatest centuries in cricket history, smashing a clean 300 from 458 balls which included 39 fours and 2 massive sixes, the decision to bat on however was a controversial one with many thinking Ponting's desire to reach 300 preventing his team from taking an Ashes lead. Keeper, Brad Haddin played a star role in the innings, bringing up his third test century in front of a loud Perth crowd. The pick of the bowlers was Graham Onions, claiming another four wickets - he has truly been the standout bowler for the English this series. After amassing a huge 599, the English knew the only result possible for them was a draw. England no. 3 Kevin Peitersen peeled off another test century as England batted it out for a draw but fell short of the follow on and could only manage 358. Clark was the best of the bowlers with 4-72 from 43 overs, with an amazing 15 maidens bowled. With England below the follow mark, Ponting sent his tired bowlers back out there to try and bowl England out quickly and possible sneak a victory. But another big hundred from Strauss, 152, and a fine knock by Prior, 86, ensured England had enough runs in the bag to prevent Australia from taking a final day victory. The match teetered out to a boring draw in the end with Australia having some fun late in the day, smashing 53 runs from just 6 overs. The series now goes to the MCG with the series level at 1-1. Boxing Day could make or break the series for both teams.

Onions has been a revelation this tour and is the leading wicket taker this series

Punter was a bit selfish. Jaques was a bit shaky and McKay struggled a bit again. Are you planning on make any changes for the 4th Test?

Hooper - I started playing ICC (properly) as South Africa in International Career. Made 4/250ish (Smith and Kallis got 50's, AB got a 100) and got Australia at 1/17 off 4 overs. Going alright and loving it. Good game..

Jaques will keep his spot, McKay is struggling yes - don't think he'll play at the 'G. I'll probably go with Hilfenhaus or Lee. But Lee has struggled this year and Hilfenhaus just doesn't take bags. Selecting Andrew McDonald is a mistake I think as well - he doesn't really do much for me.

Haha, nice work man. I knew you'd like it better then Cricket Crap '09.

how does a triple century from Ponting deny Australia victory?

Because we could have declared 100 runs earler, still had a healthy total of 500 on the board and then have more time to bowl England out twice.

I'd say it was Australia's inability to bowl England out

I guess you could say that, my bowling options were terrible.

So true. It ended in a tie! I got them all out with an over to spare, on the edge of my seat!

They are dominating me in their chase though in the 2nd ODI.

Haha, your kidding me! Thats what ICC is all about, the thrilling matches. Gets pretty exciting, I easily prefer cricket management games over the real cricket games (EA07, AC09).

Why'd you choose to be the Saffers? Don't tell me your one of them...

No..a through and through Queenslander! Haha. Just wanted something different (but still a team I had some knowledge about their players).

England Win Last Over Thriller - Anderson the Hero

England have won the Boxing Day test match by 182 runs on the final over of the match, going 2-1 in the series with only one test remaining. James Anderson had the nervous task of bowling the final over of the test to Ben Hilfenhaus, the Australian number 11, and took his wicket with just 4 balls remaining in the match. Earlier, England had laid the foundations with a decent score of 354 in the first innings thanks to half centuries from Pietersen and Strauss. Another injury to Mitchell Johnson really hurt the Aussies as Hilfenhaus claimed 4-68 in a rather timid bowling effort. Australia came out to bat on day 2 but should of stayed in the rooms after being bowled out for a measly 206. Not one batsman passed 50 as Onions the destroyer claimed another 5 wicket haul. England went back into it with a healthy lead and captain Strauss blasted another century with support coming from Ian Bell, 83. Once Bell was out, 17 short of his first Ashes ton, Strauss brought the innings to an end with Australia needing more then 500 for the victory. With 4 and a half sessions remaining in the match, Australia looked destined for a loss which would just about cost them the Ashes. But Phillip Hughes thought different as he went on to score a century in tough batting conditions, he was joined at the crease by Michael Clarke after both Jaques and Ponting offered little resistance. This partnership of 197 runs threatened to take the match away from the English as time was slipping away and with only 3 wickets down, Australians around the ground were praying for a miracle of some sort. But Hughes and Clarke fell in successive overs, leaving the rest of the batting to hopefully stick around and fend off the attack for the final session. Not having Johnson down at number 8 really hurt the Australians, with England claiming Watson, Haddin and McDonald all in the final session. Clark was looking to be the saviour as he had every fan's heart in their mouth's, blasting the bowlers to all sorts. Clark made a very courageous 32 from 36 balls which included 4 fours and two sixes - but this was not enough as he ran out of partners in the final over. With only one wicket needed for the win, Hilfenhaus was on strike to face Anderson. But the Tasmanian couldn't hold on and was bowled from the second ball of the over to hand England the victory in which could be the most important one for the team in a long time. England are now 2-1 up in the Ashes with the Sydney test to play and both Johnson and Siddle injured. The Australians have a big task in retaining the Ashes in Sydney as England only require a draw to take the series.

Clark was inspirational with the bat, but ran out of partners in the final over

Fifth Ashes Test Match - SCG, Sydney

The fifth Ashes test starts on January 2, with Australia needing a victory to retain the Ashes. England will be going for the draw as they lead the series 2-1. The Australian selectors have a lot to think about with injuries to pacemen Johnson and Siddle really hurting Australia's bowling stocks.

Disappointed Johnson didn't do a "Graeme Smith" and face the final 4 balls!

Hooper, should we get onto Sureshot and make that the next feature in ICC?
