A great fightback by the Bullets after some fine play by Challengers XI, saw them come away from Bryanston Road with a hard earned 22 run victory. On a windy day in Surrey, Nalin Ali won the toss and decided to have a bat first on what looked like a fine pitch for batting. However, things didnt go to plan for the Bullets, the dangerman Derek Ainsworth, who recently has been out of nick, saw his off stump taken out of the ground by a brute of a delivery by young star Lee Wood. It was a big wicket for the Challengers and their celebrations showed how much it meant. That wicket brought out Shastwat Ali, and together with his brother Nalin, they settled things down and looked to be forming a partnership, before that man Wood again got in on the act, forcing Nalin to play at a beauty which was edged behind to Rod Bishop. That wicket left the Bullets reeling at 36/2 and out came a man who needed some runs after his recent lack of them; Sugriva Moodley. Rest assure he didnt dissapoint, and together with Shastwat, they somewhat rescued the Bullets from a dangerous situation and put on 145 for the 3rd wicket. Shastwat was the man to go, ending the partnership, hitting one straight to Banda Bocks in the covers. With the score 181/3 with only a few overs left, the Bullets sent out hard hitting Tony Pickford and his quick 31 helped not only the Bullets, but also Moodley to reach a fantastic century. The innings ended on a very modest 249/3, slightly dissapointing given the wickets left in hand, but still a defendable score.

Chasing 250 to win, Challengers knew partnerships were the key to victory, and with a relitively inexperienced bowling line up to come, the batsmen must have fancied their chances. Openers Anton Lungile and Lee Kekeletso set them off in fine fashion, punishing the bad deliverys when they came, and they put on 112 for the opening partnership before Storer forced Kekeletso into a rash shot which fell safely into the hands of captain Nalin Ali. 18 runs later, Storer struck again, this time removing the other opener Lunglie for a well made 53, and the Bullets seemed to smell blood. Captain Ali brought men in for the attack and encouraged Rankin to attack, and upon seeing this, Challengers captain Joe Edwards and his partner Lee Wood decided to attack. Rankin was left helpless as his captains tactics were being taken apart, but he would soon have his revenge, getting the big wicket of Wood who got the slightest of edges to Midworth behind the stumps. A partnership of 36 soon followed and Banda Bocks looked like taking the game away from the Bullets with his fine stroke play. However, Gillman was brought back and struck immediately, bowling an outstanding yorker to get rid of the captain and leave the score at 201/4 with 49 needed to win. Pradnesh Ahmed was brought back after his initial expensive spell to bowl at the death and he replied brilliantly, taking 2 wickets in 3 balls to leave Challengers reeling at 208/6. Gillman then took the game away alltogether, and this time it was he who took 2 wickets in 3 balls, including the wicket of former Bullet Abeyagunawardene to leave the score 211/8. Banda Bocks looked on in horror as he saw the team crumble around him, but he decided to give it a go and some fine shots to the boundary gave Challengers a fighting chance, but the inevitable happened as Ahmed and Gillman cleaned up the tail to leave Bocks stranded on 33 and the Bullets left with a very hard fought 22 run victory.

"Not our greatest performance by any means, but im pleased with the fightback the boys showed. Sugriva and Shastwat batted very well to get us back into it and then Fitz bowled brilliantly to give us a victory we probably didnt look like getting at several stages in the match. I think a special mention should go to Storesy too for his tight and economical bowling, he's come on leaps and bounds in the past couple of weeks. Hopefully we can take some good lessons from this and use them in the future."

a really close game, but you won, congrats briggsey keep it up

Ali took a while to make his 80 odd, that was partly what got you that alright total rather than a good total.

Yup but if you look at the situation he found himself in when he came to the crease, first 15/1 then 36/2, we were in trouble, and he changed his approach accordingly, probably did take too long, but if he would have batted more aggressively, he could have made a quick 30 and then got out and we might have been 70 odd for 3.

Be down at the nets later tonight!

Preperations For Tomorrow

League Game 8
Merthyr Tydfil CC v Briggs Bullets@ Merthyr Tydfil CG
Start Time: 10:30am

Pre-Match Notes:The Bullets travel up to Durham for their 8th league game of the campaign tomorrow, as they take on bottom of the table Merthyr Tydfil. Without a single win all season, Tydfil will certinally be up against it tomorrow against a Bullets team in fantastic form, coming off the back of 4 straight victories in all competitions. Tydfil however are coming off the back of some crushing defeats, the last of those seeing the man who led them to promotion last season, walk out on the club, leaving them managerless for the game tomorrow. A crushing defeat tomorrow would all but seal Tydfil's return to VI next season, and with but Bullets expected to name a full strength team, the results look ominous for the strugglers. A win tomorrow for the Bullets could see them finally move up the table from their current position of 5th, something which will no doubt give everyone at the club a huge lift.

Judging on my last league match and Merthyr Tydfil's last league match, and depending on the teams for tomorrow, the summary would be as follows:

Code:
                [B]Briggs Bullets[/B] [B]Merthyr Tydfil CC[/B]
Top Order: respectable mediocre
Middle Order: competent woeful
Lower Order: abysmal [B]V[/B] abysmal
Seam Bowling: respectable abysmal
Spin Bowling: respectable worthless
Fielding: woeful woeful

Should be a pretty comfortable victory for the Bullets if ratings are anything to go by. The last league game saw pretty similar ratings for The Exes and they were humbled well and truly by the Bullets, and with no manager and morale at an all time low, will Tydfil have anything in the tank to lift them in time?

Briggs Bullets Lineup to face Merthyr Tydfil CC tomorrow (from):
1.Ainsworth, 2.Sohail, 3.Midworth(wk), 4.Ali(c), 5.Jepson, 6.Pickford, 7.Archibald, 8.Burdett, 9.Gillman, 10.Bignot, 11.Storer

Briggs' View
"Tomorrow should be a similar game to last Friday, this lot caused our bowlers a few problems at the Dome earlier in the season, but our batsmen demolished them so I dont think we have too much to worry about. We lost Moodley last night though, he fell awkwardly and injured his elbow, he's had ice on it this morning and he's hoping to get a net in sometime tomorrow to see if he will be okay for Sunday. Ainsworth returns to the team with Shastwat making way, Midworth will bat at 3 in the absence of Moodley."

A fine all round performance from the Bullets saw them leave Merthyr Tydfil CG last night with another victory, thus keeping their promotion hopes alive, and all but dooming Tydfil to relegation. On a pitch which looked to offer a lot to the bowlers, the home captain Roy Craig m suprisingly chose to bat first, a decision which he was probably regretting an hour later. The Bullets opening bowlers Burdett and Storer gained plenty of swing early on in the piece, beating the bat of the captain and his partner Owens, on several occasions, and it wouldn't be long before the breakthrough came, Owens knicking Burdett straight to Pickford at slip who took a fine low catch. The opening pair would them combine for the 2nd wicket to fall, Mitchell Miah the man to go, hitting Storer straight up in the air for Burdett to run around and take a comfortable catch in the covers. At that point Tydfil were 20/2 and the captain was struggling to get into his normal free flowing self style of play and disaster would soon strike, a mix up between himself and Blissett saw the captain comfortably run out leaving Tydfil 24/3 and in all sorts of trouble. The wicket brought Niall Huckerby to the crease, and also some signs of resilience from Tydfil. Blissett stood firm blocking out the tricky medium pacers from Nalin Ali, and seeing off the spin from Bignot, however Bignot would soon strike dismissing Huckerby for 12 after the slightest of edges landed comfortably in the hands of Pickford at slip. Fitz Gillman was then brought into the attack and he would strike immediately, removing new batsman Mike Illett with a brute of a delivery which Midworth gobbled up with ease behind the stumps. The resilience of Ben Blissett would soon after come to an end, his 71 ball innings ended by an outstanding yorker from Storer, and leaving Tydfil 67/6 and next ball it would be 67/7 as Hyoms edged straight to Pickford at slip. Next over the captain would chip in with a wicket of his own, clean bowling Swayne who seemingly mis-read the line of the delivery. Bignot would then come back and finish off the innings, picking up the final two wickets with replica delivery's, forcing the batsman to play at spinning deliveries which comfortably found their way from the edge into Midworth's gloves to end the Tydfil innings at 78.

25 minutes later, Ainsworth and Sohail made their way out to the crease to begin the Bullets reply, and just over 30 minutes later, they would be back in the pavillion celebrating a comfortable victory. The Bullets openers showing no mercy to the bowling attack, Christian Pembridge in perticular who was hit for 49 in his 4.4 overs. Ainsworth announced his return to form with a huge six which landed in the river behind the pavillion. Sohail would finish the innings, a finely placed lob over the top for the winning runs and a big victory for the Bullets, especially going in to next weeks big game against top of the table Postwar's.

"Nice work out for the boys, the bowlers got in their longest work load for quite some time, and they all bowled brilliantly which was a good sign. Storer continues to improve and he will be a stall walt come next week I feel. I was pleased in the manor in which Ainsy and Sohail knocked off the total too, they could have gone out and taken time and nudged it about a bit, but they went out their and played positively which was great to see."

Preperations For Tomorrow

Sri Krishna Team v Briggs Bullets @ Sri Krishna Ground
Start Time: 4:30am

Pre-Match Notes:The Bullets travel to India on Sunday for a friendly game against Sri Krishna Team. With both teams in red hot form at the current time, it should be a fascinating game, and on a ground which in the past has suited spinners, the Bullets may go all out and play 3 spin bowlers for this one. Sri Krishna Team currently lie top of the table in their league in India, fresh off the back of a commanding 9 wicket victory on Friday. The Bullets are fresh off the back of a 10 wicket victory on Friday but lie 3rd in their league. Expect a typical sub-continent wicket for the game, and, with the home fans sure to give their team an extra man for the game, the Bullets will have to certinally give it their all as they prepare for the start of the Planetcricket Battrick Championship next week.

Judging on my last friendly match and Sri Krishna Team's last friendly match, and depending on the teams for tomorrow, the summary would be as follows:

Code:
                [B]Briggs Bullets[/B] [B]Sri Krishna Team[/B]
Top Order: respectable mediocre
Middle Order: mediocre feeble
Lower Order: worthless [B]V[/B] abysmal
Seam Bowling: competent mediocre
Spin Bowling: respectable competent
Fielding: woeful feeble

The ratings suggest Sri Krishna team have a pretty good all round line up, while their batting leaves something to be desired for, their all round bowling seems to be their strongest point, their spin department looks dangerous and on a dusty wicket, it could cause some trouble for the Bullets, however if the away side perform to the best of their abilities, it should be a comfortable victory for the Bullets.

Briggs Bullets Lineup to face Sri Krishna Team tomorrow (from):
1.Ainsworth, 2.Midworth(wk), 3.Moodley, 4.N.Ali(c), 5.S.Ali, 6.Pickford, 7.Sohail, 8.Ahmed, 9.Gillman, 10.Rankin, 11.Storer

Briggs' View
"This will give us some good preperation for the games coming up next week. We have 2 huge games next week, obviously with the league game against the leaders and then the start of the PC Championship, so to play against one of the teams involved in it the week before is always helpful. They should test us, they have a good team and are top of their league, the lads always enjoy a testing game in difficult conditions and thats certinally what they will get tomorrow, so they will have to show their true character and show no complecancy tomorrow to come away with a victory."

A jaded Bullets team left India a happy unit as they completed a successful victory over high flying Sri Krishna Team. On a beautiful day in Mumbai, Bullets captain Nalin Ali won the toss and decided to bat on a pitch which looked as if it would deteriorate as the game went on. Ainsworth and Midworth made their way out to the middle, but Midworth's stay would be a short one, lasting only one delivery as he was adjudged LBW to the bowling of Dwight Searle. Replays suggested it was going over, but the umpire had no hesitation in giving the youngster out. at 8/1 after 2 overs, the Bullets were in a spot of bother, but Mumbai born Sugriva Moodley made his way out to the crease, and together with Ainsworth, the two formed a partnership worth 66, but it was broken when young spinner Al ameen caught the inside edge of Ainsworth's bat which sent the ball crashing into the stumps. That brought the captain out to the middle, however Moodley would soon depart to yet another spinner in Prateek Abdul kadir. Moodley pushed out at a wide one and edged straight into the hands of Sagren at slip to leave the Bullets 97/3 and in bother. That wicket brought out the captains brother, Shastwat, and together the two would proceed to work the Bullets out of trouble with some quick scoring and brutal shots. The brothers put on 153 for the 5th wicket, smashing boundaries at will, and Nalin hit 2 huge sixes out into the streets of Mumbai, however he would soon see his younger brother depart in the chase for runs at the end of the innings. Shastwat looked to hammer Searle out of the park, and nearly succeeded, only for the Sagren to take an outstanding one handed catch on the boundary edge to bring an end to Shastwat's 88 ball innings of 82. Nalin however was looking for a century, and he was joined at the crease by Pickford and together the two scored quick runs, but Nalin would play all round a Searle delivery with the score on 265/4 to leave his team 5 down and himself 7 short of what would have been a fantastic century. The Bullets innings eventually ended on 278/5, not the best of totals, but defendable none the less.

The Bullets came out needing quick wickets, opening bowlers Ahmed and Storer bowled tightly but were hit away early in the piece, Ahmed especially, with his raw pace sometimes has the potential to give run scoring deliveries, and Moodley would capitalise on that, hammering the youngster for a huge six. However, Storer would make the breakthrough with the score on 17, clening up Harley with a brutal yorker, something he is becoming renound for. Ahmed would then strike next over, removing Moodley who hit a wide ball straight to the captain who was standing in the covers. That wicket brought Sagren to the crease and he would waste no time getting after the young Ahmed, hitting him away for a couple of boundaries and forcing captain Nalin Ali to take him out of the attack and introduce the spinners, and it would pay dividens immediately, Rankin trapping Virat Paki plumb infront ending a 43 run partnership. Ghandi would fall in Rankin's next over, the experienced spinner flighting one up to Ghandi who smacked it straight into the hands of Gillman. at 73/4 the game still looked finely balanced, but Sagren would soon fall to the spin of Pickford, playing all round a delivery which spun sharpley at the last minute. Rankin would then go on to claim his 3rd wicket, this time dismissing Abdul kadir who swung and missed at a ball that didnt spin. The combination of Gillman and Storer would then go on to finish the innings, Gillman picking up 3 wickets in the process, to give the few travelling Bullets fans something to cheer about.

"Not a great performance by any means, but a win is a win and we had to work hard to get it. The batting was dissapointing, the Ali brothers saved us from embarassment, Midworth was unlucky having seen the replays but Ainsworth and Moodley gave their wickets away at vital times and I reminded them that when they came back to the pavillion. We again bowled brilliantly, young Pradnesh had a lot to learn but this experience will have done him some good and he will continue to improve. Rankin and Gillman bowled brilliantly and kept it tight, the margin of victory probably flatters us a bit as we didnt perform at our best, but hopefully we'll be back to it next week."
