Is British society on a degenerative cycle?

After watching a programme on iPlayer, it just highligted to me, how messed up British society is. Basically we now have kids as young as 13 who steal cars, go and drive them around and crash them. As they get taken away by the police they have big grins on their faces and are waving to the crowds. They spit and swear at the police and their parents are just as bad, generally living of the dole, smoking and drinking away and contributing sod all. We have kids in gangs, carrying knives and getting drunk, before they even start secondary school. Kids, dealing and taking drugs and skipping school, punching teachers and getting pregant in their early teens.

I personally think the time has come for much harsher punishments to be used, aimed at the parents. A kid of 13, doesn't really know right and wrong, it is the parental influence which should show play an important factor. If a parent thought that they would either go away for hard time, or else be made to pay a large fine they would get their children back onto the straight and narrow. These parents also need to be encouraged back into full time work, with a bit more pride in themselves, instead of just sitting at home watching Jeremy Kyle. There are plenty of single parent families out there, where the kids are well behaved, go to school, go to uni and make a go of themselves, because of the fact that the parent had pride in themselves and brought them up correctly. This never used to happen in the past due to there being a much stronger community spirit, which is no longer present and people not wanting to be thought as a bad British citizen by the local community.

Britain is becoming a society where crime is the norm and prison and the police are no longer respected/feared. If society continues like this for much longer without action being taken, it will continue to grow and grow and God knows where that will leave us, in 20, 40 or even 100 years time.

I can't be bothered to read all that but I will say this. Everyone needs to realise a lot of chavs are pretty decent people.

As David Cameron would say
Hug a hoody.

Thank you

Did anyone see the program on ITV the other day In the Line of Fire? People really do underestimate the depth of the problems in some areas. What really shocked me was the prison time of some of the people who were arrested a youth got 18 months for a triple stabbing! Seriously too little.

Good to see a bunch of Tories on planetcricket. And by good, I mean bad.

You cannot make a judgement on a case when they tell you such little information about the case as, "a youth got 18 months for a triple stabbing!" It completely ignores most of the legal process and is awful to base an opinion on. Then again, the public don't care about reality so the media will keep it so brief.

It's nothing new, Tom. It's been happening for ages it just used to be "Kids will be kids", but Joe Public likes to get hysterical over things that are blown out of proportion. The UK is hardly ever going to have a broken society, we live in a fantastic country, you want a "broken society" try reading some of jordox's posts (or his good blog) about Zimbabwe.

I think the show that Tom watched is going a tad over the top. It's also not just to do with the parents also. It's society and how it's run. 50 years ago if you had a baby at 14 you would be dead. These days it's more acceptable just through society. Think about this; A mother with a daughter(14) and the daughter gets pregnant. The daughter when she grows up is going to be more tolerant to that sort of stuff and it goes on.

I saw recently but just in Australia that crime down under has gone down around 15% from 1980. So all the stereotypes that say "you shouldn't leave your back door unlocked because its not safe.....".

What also is bad is that the Parents are so busy they got no time for there kid. So who knows what they do from 3-6 after school? But i'd much rather a hands-off mum than a helicopter mum.

Wot the fack you torkin' baat brav? Dant got time for you, gotta go impregnate my sister before she goes back to Year 7.
