The 1904 Olympic Games in St Louis were overshadowed by the Louisiana Purchase Exposition, much like the 1900 Olympic Games in Paris during the time of the Exposition Universelle. Both Games stretched over long periods and were far from the standards set by the original 1896 Olympic Games in Athens. The Olympic Movement is currently not in good shape and desperately needs to recapture the spirit of 1896. It needs to do so quickly, as to all those who did not participate in St. Louis, Rome 1908 will mean an 8-year gap. As a compromise, the first Intercalated Games have been scheduled to start in 1906 by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) as part of a new schedule, where every four years, in between the internationally organized games, there will be intermediate games held in Athens. The IOC as a whole have given the Greek NOC full support for the organisation of the event.

Ten different nations have offered their support for cricket to be included as an event at the venue where it proved so successful ten years previously in 1896, when the United States stunned the world to win a Gold medal ahead of their Test-playing peers from Australia and Great Britain. The teams participating (in alphabetical order) are

West Indies. The iconic Panathinaiko Stadium will once again play host to cricket matches, and the ten participating teams play in an intense tournament which is set to be in the cup tie or knockout format, where a single defeat prior to the semi-finals would mean elimination.​

Summary​

The 1906 Intercalated Games, more commonly referred to as the "Second International Olympic Games in Athens" or simply the 1906 Olympic Games, were held in Athens, the city that hosted the first modern Olympic Games in 1896. These Intercalated Games were started as part of a new schedule proposed by the International Olympic Committee (IOC), where every four years, in between the internationally organized games, there would be intermediate games held in Athens. These Games were at the time considered to be official Olympic Games, with proper Olympic medals being distributed to the participants. However, the medals are not officially recognized by the IOC today, and the various statistics and records set during the cricket tournament are also considered unofficial as a result of the 1906 Games no longer having official Olympic status.

In spite of the confusion regarding the status of the Games, and controversies caused by some of cricket's most prominent names who refused to play in the tournament such as Australia's Clem Hill and Great Britain's Sydney Barnes among others, the 1906 Games proved successful and the cricket quite entertaining. Unlike the 1900, 1904 and 1908 games, they were neither stretched out over months nor overshadowed by an international exhibition like the Exposition Universelle in Paris in 1900. The crisp format, which saw the games completed in a little over 10 days was most likely instrumental in the continued existence of the Olympic Games.

These were the first Olympic Games to have all athlete registration go through the NOCs, and also the first to have the Opening of the Games as a separate event: an event at which for the first time the athletes marched into the stadium in national teams, each following its national flag. Among other innovations introduced that would hold future Olympic Games in good stead included the use of the Zappeion as an "Olympic Village", the closing ceremony at the conclusion of the Games, raising of national flags for the victors, the use of the cup tie or knockout format for the sport of cricket, and several less visible changes now accepted as Olympic tradition. The list of participants for the sport of cricket, which for the first time included as many as 10 teams in an Olympic tournament, included (in alphabetical order): Australia, Belgium, Canada, Egypt, France, Great Britain, Netherlands, South Africa, United States of America and the West Indies. The cricket matches were played at the iconic Panathinaiko Stadium, the same venue where cricket was played during the last Olympic Games in Athens in 1896.

Netherlands and Belgium were made to play against Egypt and France respectively in a preliminary round, where the winners of the respective matches would progress to the quarter-finals to which Australia, Canada, Great Britain South Africa, United States and the West Indies had already gained direct access. Netherlands tied with Egypt, but progressed to the quarter-finals due to a superior innings run rate, whereas France, now a much stronger team compared to one that participated in the 1900 Olympic Games in Paris, crushed newcomers Belgium by a 9-wicket margin. However, both teams would go on to fare quite poorly in the quarter-finals against much stronger opposition.

In the first quarter-final, Australia bowled out the Netherlands for a paltry 62, with Frank Tarrant claiming a hat-trick by dismissing Willem van Waveren, Adolph von Ernsthausen and Friedrich Rincker off successive deliveries. They won by a massive 10-wicket margin with 40 overs to spare. The second quarter-final between South Africa and the West Indies proved a much closer affair, as Bertie Harragin recorded the only century of the competition on a terrible wicket for batting. In spite of his efforts, his team would go on to lose by only 2 wickets due to the grit displayed by South African leg-spinning all-rounder Aubrey Faulkner, who scored an unbeaten 57 to guide his team to victory after having already picked 3 for 29 with the ball earlier in the match.

The third quarter-final saw Great Britain and France face each other for the first time since their one and only encounter in the 1900 Olympic Games, in which the former crushed the latter by an Olympic record 278-run margin. The scars from that match had seemingly resurfaced with France's bowlers allowing CB Fry and Archie MacLaren to run amok and bring up 200 by the 29th over of their innings, before the match was interrupted by rain leaving Fry stranded on 97. Under the new playing conditions put into place as a result of the rain delay having cost several hours of play, France were set a near impossible target of 201 off just 29 overs. Needless to say, they failed quite miserably only just making it past 100 and losing by a 99-run margin. Nonetheless, it was a massive improvement when compared with their result from six years before. The fourth quarter-final between arch-rivals United States and Canada was also similarly interrupted by rain, reducing the match to a 36 overs-a-side contest. Bart King, the legendary American all-rounder scored 89 off 104 balls and later took 5 for 26 to bring up a 40-run victory for the United States. And so, Australia, South Africa, Great Britain and the United States were through to the semi-finals of the tournament, which would go on to be among the most intensely contested cricket matches witnessed in the year 1906.

The pitch used for the first semi-final between Australia and South Africa was perhaps the worst to the used throughout the entire competition, with only 7 out of 22 batsmen making it past double figures during the entire match and only one batsman making it past fifty - South Africa's Tip Snooke. Australia, who had been set a paltry target of 133 took as many as 41.1 overs to get there and lost 8 wickets in the process. But more importantly, they were through to their third Olympic final on the trot after having qualified for the final in 1900 and 1904. They won both those finals to claim Gold medals and had a realistic chance of claiming a third in succession or a hat-trick if they could win this one as well.

The second semi-final between Great Britain and the United States, the finalists of the 1896 Olympic Games, was undoubtedly one of the most thrilling matches to ever be played in the Olympic Games since it's inception in 1896. The United States, who had been reduced to a pathetic 35/5 at one stage by the British bowlers, recovered to post 168 on the back on Christy Morris' half-century from No 7. It proved enough for their classy bowling attack to defend, as Percy Clark claimed 3 for 23 and Ranji Hordern 3 for 29 to bowl the Americans to a thrilling 2-run victory. Bart King did little of note throughout the match but managed to claim Great Britain's final and most crucial wicket to deliver the killing blow. Ten years on from their famous triumph over Great Britain in the 1896 final which saw them defy all odds to win a Gold medal for cricket, the United States would have another opportunity to do so against Australia. Incidentally, the United States were also the last team to beat Australia in an official Olympic match, having beaten them by 2 wickets in 1896. Australia have remained largely invincible since that encounter, remaining unbeaten in all Olympic matches since and boasting a 14-match winning streak, one which included two Gold medals in succession for the sport of cricket.

Great Britain and South Africa, both using the Union Jack as their official flags during the 1906 Games, faced each other in the Bronze playoff for the prize of a Bronze medal. It was one that Great Britain claimed, and quite convincingly too as they chased down South Africa's impressive total of 200 with more than 8 overs to spare. Furious at seeing his team vanquished in the semi-finals by the United States, Great Britain's skipper Archie MacLaren was simply unstoppable during his knock of 76 coming off just 86 deliveries. A patient half-century from Johnny Tyldesley, who went past 50 for the first time in the Olympics since his record-breaking 273-run season in 1900 and Gilbert Jessop's usual fireworks with the bat took them to victory by 7 wickets, thereby earning them the Bronze medal at the expense of South Africa.

In the final, it was the United States who emerged victorious at the toss but rather than have a bat as is the most popular choice for captains in tournament finals, they decided to send the Australians in to bat instead. For a while it seemed like a terrible decision given how easily Victor Trumper dominated the American bowlers to put his team in a position of dominance. But just when it looked like Australia would post a total in excess of 200, they were unexpectedly ripped apart by Bart King during the final stages of their innings. King, who didn't have much success until that point suddenly had another 5-wicket haul for the tournament, making it an astonishing 2 from just 3 matches. Australia were restricted to 191/8 off their 50 overs, which was still defendable given the bowling attack they possessed comprising of Monty Noble, Tibby Cotter, Warwick Armstrong and Frank Tarrant, who had all been successful on the underprepared wickets found in this part of the world.

But these Americans were nothing like the teams they had been facing from Great Britain in Olympic finals all these years; they took the attack to the Australian bowlers during the early part of their innings, never allowing them to settle into a proper rhythm. Though they lost some early wickets in the process and were at one point struggling at 87/5, they had more than enough backup in Francis Bohlen and Christy Morris batting at Nos 6 and 7 respectively. The pair added 91 in just 16.3 overs for the 6th wicket to effectively win the match for the United States. Morris was eventually run out on 47, but Bohlen carried on batting to bring up a fine half-century, and was ably supported by Percy Clark coming in at No 8 who struck the winning blow off Frank Tarrant by driving him over his head to the boundary, bringing up a 4-wicket victory for the Americans. The United States won a Gold medal for cricket at the 1906 Intercalated Games as a result, leaving Australia to settle for Silver, and Great Britain for Bronze after having beaten South Africa in the Bronze playoff. Bart King was declared Player of the Tournament for his awe-inspiring all-round efforts which included 110 runs at 36.67 (1 half-century) and 11 wickets at 8.27 (2 five-wicket hauls) from just 3 matches - numbers that were good enough to see CB Fry miss out on the honor despite having scored 159 runs at 79.50 on some of the worst batting wickets ever seen in Olympic cricket.​

Cricket at the Olympics - Los Angeles 1932​

The 1932 Summer Olympics are set to be hosted in Los Angeles, the only city to make a bid to host the Games. With the world having gone into severe economic depression that has lasted more than 3 years since the Wall Street Crash of 1929 (now known as Black Tuesday), many nations and athletes have been unable to confirm their participation for the 1932 Games and it is understood that fewer than half the participants of the 1928 Summer Olympics in Amsterdam will be returning to compete this time. The number of participants for the sport of cricket has also gone down from 20 in 1928 to 16 for 1932. Among those not participating are the national teams of Bermuda, Burma, Ceylon, Rhodesia and Uruguay. In spite of all the gloom surrounding the Olympic Games and most of the world in general, cricket is set to welcome a new participant - Germany, who have been participating in the Olympic Games since 1896 but have never participated in the sport of cricket until now. West Indies. The Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, constructed in 1923, will be used for all cricket matches set to be played in the tournament.

It is hoped that the Olympic Games' return to the United States for the first time since 1904 can breathe some new life into American cricket, which has gone into a freefall since the end of the Great War. The United States were at one time one of the strongest cricketing nations in the Olympics, winning medals in five consecutive Olympic Games in succession from 1896 (they also won Gold in the 1906 Intercalated Games, which no longer has Olympic status as of 1932), when they stunned a powerful Great Britain lineup led by WG Grace to win a Gold medal for the sport. Since winning a Silver medal in 1912 however, they have won only one match in the three subsequent Olympic Games to follow and have endured two winless campaigns in 1920 and 1928 where they were knocked out without winning a single match. In a bid to add some much needed experience to their squad, the United States have recalled veteran Christy Morris, who is currently in his 50th year and is set to complete 28 years as an Olympic cricketer, taking him well past Bart King's American record of 24 years as a player in the Olympics.

Meanwhile, the IOC have also announced a slight change in the tournament's format - the First Round or Round of 16 will remain in the knockout format, but will be followed by a group stage of 8 teams divided into groups of 4 each rather than the usual quarter-finals. The top two teams from each group will qualify for the semi-finals, following which the bronze playoff and final shall be contested the same way as before. It has recently been argued that today's top cricketers do not get enough matches to play in Olympic tournaments, and therefore do not stand a chance of breaking some of the records set by players who played in the Olympic Games held between 1896 and 1908, before the cup tie or knockout format was implemented for cricket. Players in those tournaments were guaranteed a minimum of 4 to 5 matches regardless of their performance, whereas in knockout tournaments only the teams to qualify for the semi-finals got to play as many as 4 matches. The change in format will ensure that every team able to go past the initial Round of 16 will get a minimum of 4 matches each regardless of performance, and those qualifying for the semi-finals as many as 6 matches. With a whole new generation of potential record-breakers having emerged such as Don Bradman from Australia, George Headley from the West Indies and Wally Hammond from Great Britain, it would have indeed been a great shame if they were not afforded the same opportunities as players of yesteryears who went on to set several records in Olympic cricket that are yet to be broken.

- Sapphire/Crystal. Used for players that are inexperienced or with a lower skill set compared to those from a higher category. They could either put in good performances or fail miserably.

Explanation on pitch types

Damp/Sticky - Massively in favor of bowlers and an absolute nightmare to bat on, unless you're Victor Trumper.
Evenly balanced - Provides an evenly balanced contest for all disciplines.
Green - A lot of movement on offer, which makes it ideal for bowlers capable of swinging the ball. Quite regular to find in most European countries.
Hard - Ideal conditions for batting. Good deal of bounce on offer for fast bowlers as well. Could go either way.
Dry/Slow - Ideal for slow and spin bowlers as the name suggests. Sometimes quite difficult to bat on.​

Had a good look at the overall stats and managed to pick up a few things of interest:

- Argentina's Herbert Dorning is set to break the record for the longest Olympic career, and for that matter the longest international career ever recorded. Dorning, who made his Olympic debut all the way back in the 1900 Olympic Games at Paris, will have completed a whopping 32 years as an Olympic cricketer when Argentina face New Zealand in the first round of the competition. Wilfred Rhodes, who has had the longest Test career ever recorded at 30 years and 315 days is well short of Dorning's record.
- Herbert Dorning, with 35 wickets as of 1932 is also just 6 wickets short of Bart King's Olympic record 41 wickets, the most in the history of the Olympics. He needs 7 wickets to overtake King and become the all-time leading wicket-taker in Olympic history. For that to happen, Argentina would obviously have to beat New Zealand and qualify for the group stages first, which shall guarantee them a minimum of 4 matches in the tournament regardless of performance, thereby giving Dorning a realistic shot at claiming the record for himself.
- Herbert Dorning, now in his 58th year is easily the oldest cricketer to ever appear in the Olympics. There have been only three other instances recorded of players playing past the age of 50 in the Olympics - Netherlands' Friedrich Rincker was 51 years old at the time of his final Olympic campaign in 1928; Ireland's Bob Lambert also played in the 1924 Olympics, by which time he was aged 50; and Brazil's Charles Miller was also in his 50th year when he represented his national team in the same tournament that year. - Another record that looks all set to be broken is that of the most dismissals affected in an Olympic career. Charles Winter, who had a 20-year career for the United States between 1908 and 1928 currently sits at the top of the list with 16 dismissals from 11 matches. Australia's Bert Oldfield is just one short of the mark with 15 dismissals from 9 matches, and would go past the now retired Winter if he affects just 2 more dismissals during the course of the 1932 tournament.
- It is highly unlikely that Jack Hobbs' record of 804 runs will be broken anytime soon or at least anytime during the 1932 Olympics. He is still 376 runs ahead of the nearest competitor among active players i.e South Africa's Herbie Taylor, and 393 runs ahead of Australia's Bill Ponsford, the only player apart from Hobbs with a career batting average in excess of 50 after having scored 400 runs in a career.
- Herbie Taylor, the only batsman to score more than 1 century in an Olympic career may soon be joined by others. Don Bradman, who scored a century in his maiden Olympic campaign in 1928 at the age of 20 has since racked up 13 Test centuries and averages a scarcely believable 112.29 from 18 Test matches as of February 1932. His Olympic career average also towers above all other batsmen with a minimum of 200 career runs at 113.50 from 4 matches.
- Clarrie Grimmett is the only player in Olympic history to represent 3 different teams in the Olympic Games. He made his Olympic debut in 1912 for Australasia, bowling them to a Bronze medal with a spell of 3 for 26 from 10 overs against South Africa. When the Olympic Games resumed 8 years later following the end of the Great War in 1920, he represented New Zealand in just 1 match before emigrating to Australia, where he seems to have finally found a permanent place having represented them in 8 matches since 1924.
- Had the stats from the 1906 Intercalated Games been made official, Bart King would have become the first bowler to take more than 50 wickets in an Olympic career with 52 at an average of 14.12 from 25 matches. His batting stats would have also improved from 543 runs at 30.17 in 22 matches to 653 runs at 31.10 in 25 matches, making him just the 4th player following Clem Hill, Victor Trumper and Jack Hobbs to score more than 600 runs in a career. But unfortunately they're not, and so his career tally remains at 41 wickets at 15.68 and 543 runs at 30.17 from 22 matches between 1896 and 1920.
- Australia's Victor Trumper would also have had 717 runs at 35.85 for his Olympic career if the above were the case, making him just the second batsman to score more than 700 career runs, and taking him well past his contemporary Clem Hill who still holds the record for the most runs by an Australian batsman in the Olympics with 685 at 40.29 from 20 matches between 1896 and 1912. Trumper is second only to Hill among Australians with 613 runs at 34.06 from 18 matches between 1900 and 1912, and third overall on the list of the highest run-scorers in Olympic history.
- Among bowlers from non-Test playing nations with a minimum of 15 wickets in an Olympic career, Edward Cregar of the United States averages the cheapest with his 18 wickets coming at just 13.28 from 13 matches between 1896 and 1904. The only other bowlers averaging less than 15 runs per wicket in the Olympics after having picked a minimum of 15 wickets are Bill Lockwood (23 wickets at 10.65), Tom Richardson (19 wickets at 14.16), Sydney Barnes (25 wickets at 14.16) and Wilfred Rhodes (23 wickets at 14.78) from Great Britain; Herbert Wookey (21 wickets at 14.33) from Canada; and Bert Vogler (19 wickets at 13.11) from South Africa.
