Good to see a final opponent that is not Grest Britain for a change :p
I wonder where cricket would be if this team had Test status. Could T20 be at the same level as NFL and NBA?

Lineup rules

1) A proper wicket-keeper (:wk:/:wkb:) in your XI.
2) A minimum of 6 players marked to bowl.
3) Players ruled out due to injury cannot be selected.
4) Lineup restrictions/quotas as mentioned in the match details must be followed.
5) I don't usually wait more than 72 hours for lineups in this league.

Player rarities

In each squad, players have been marked with these icons to give you a fair idea of their playing skills and overall usefulness to your team.

:purpo: - Legend. Used for the players that are undoubtedly the best of the lot.
:goldo: - Gold. Used for players with a high level of consistency and ability to deliver during key moments.
:redo: - Ruby. Used for players that are extremely talented and can play in a way no one else can replicate.
:slvo: - Silver. Used for players that aren't as talented as their Gold/Ruby/Legend contemporaries, but still capable of holding their own against the best in business.
:bro: - Bronze. Used for players that are a level below Silver. They are more likely to put in good performances than players from the Sapphire/Crystal category.
:blueo: - Sapphire/Crystal. Used for players that are inexperienced or with a lower skill set compared to those from a higher category. They could either put in good performances or fail miserably.

Explanation on pitch types

Damp/Sticky - Massively in favor of bowlers and an absolute nightmare to bat on, unless you're Victor Trumper.
Evenly balanced - Provides an evenly balanced contest for all disciplines.
Green - A lot of movement on offer, which makes it ideal for bowlers capable of swinging the ball. Quite regular to find in most European countries.
Hard - Ideal conditions for batting. Good deal of bounce on offer for fast bowlers as well. Could go either way.
Dry/Slow - Ideal for slow and spin bowlers as the name suggests. Sometimes quite difficult to bat on.

Some random stats and trivia I've gathered up before the final that I thought you guys might enjoy.

- The results and statistics of this tournament will not be taken into account when updating the Olympics all-time stats for cricket.
- Great Britain have been the only team to even touch the 200-run mark in this tournament. There were no less than three instances of teams scoring more than 200 runs in an innings the last time an Olympic tournament was held in Athens in 1896.
- 2 matches into the competition, Australia are yet to register an individual half-century. Their highest score so far has been 35 by both Victor Trumper and Sunny Jim Mackay. The United States already have 2 half-centurions in their lineup in Bart King and Christy Morris.
- Australia have never lost an Olympic final. They have qualified for the final on no less than 5 occasions, and have gone on to win every single one of them.
- In fact, Australia have not been defeated in a single match in the Olympics since their defeat to the United States in 1896, in what was the first ever cricket match to be played at the Olympics.
- The United States have qualified for Olympic finals three times, winning one, and losing two albeit by extremely narrow margins.
- Monty Noble's economy rate of 1.25 is the cheapest ever recorded by a bowler to have sent down more than 10 overs in an Olympic tournament.
- Great Britain's CB Fry currently leads the run charts with 159 runs from only 2 innings in the competiton. The fact that he managed to remain unbeaten in one of this innings has given him a stratospheric batting average of 159.00, the highest ever recorded in an Olympic tournament.
- In spite of the bowler-friendly nature of the pitches found in this tournament, only one bowler has managed a 5-wicket haul thus far - Bart King.
- Bart King is undoubtedly the most dangerous player one can ever hope to come up against in an Olympic final, and for his batting exploits rather than his unmatchably skilled swing bowling. In regular Olympic matches, King averages a mere 21.13 with the bat with his runs coming at a sluggish strike-rate of 55.68 per 100 balls. In Olympic finals however, his batting average rises to a scarcely believable 102.50 with his runs coming at an even more staggering 107.33 runs per 100 balls. Might it be noted that 14 of his 16 career sixes have also come in just 3 Olympic finals.

A break-up of Bart King's career batting statistics in the Olympics

- Australia have a player of their own who generally saves his best for Olympic finals, as shown by 2 half-centuries from appearances in Olympic finals in 1900 and 1904. Unfortunately, Clem Hill is more than 8000 miles away from all the action having opted out of his tournament.
- Edward Cregar, who has found his way back into the American playing XI for the final was at one time one of the most dangerous bowlers in Olympic cricket. In 8 matches between 1896 to 1900, he claimed 16 wickets at an average of 11.19 while conceding his runs at a miserly 3.17 per over. However, his most recent Olympic campaign in 1904 saw those figures drop considerably as he could only manage 2 wickets from 5 matches at an average of 30.00 and was able to send down only 14 overs during the entire tournament.
- Only one Australian still remains from their original 1896 Bronze-winning squad - Syd Gregory. He spent the entire 1896 tournament on the bench and is yet to be capped this season.
- The United States on the other hand still have 7 players in their XI from their historic 1896 Gold-winning squadron. The only noticeable absentee being the retired George Patterson, who scored 396 runs at 36.00 and took 18 wickets at 20.50 during a 13-match Olympic career between 1896 and 1904.

Great Britain had sent in their opponents with the plan of bowling them out cheaply and setting themselves an easy target to chase. They got a lot more than they bargained for as South Africa became only the second team to put up a total of 200 or more in the tournament, owing mostly to Gordon White and Jimmy Sinclair. While White held the innings together with a patient 55 coming off 99 balls, Sinclair completely dominated the British bowling attack to bring up a quickfire 53 off just 50 balls.

Great Britain lost CB Fry, their leading run-scorer in the tournament to Johannes Kotze in the very first over of their run-chase. It didn't stop them from chasing down their target, with skipper Archie MacLaren's sheer bloody-mindedness inspiring them to chase down 200 to win a Bronze medal for cricket at the 1906 Intercalated Games. MacLaren, who scored 76 off just 86 balls added 135 alongside Johnny Tyldesley for the 2nd wicket. Gilbert Jessop then took over following Tyldesley's dismissal for a well played 51, scoring 41 off only 37 balls to bring up victory with more than 8 overs to spare.

He struck another huge blow off Clark in the 26th over, but the latter had his revenge the very next ball when he trapped him leg before with a superb inswinger. It was the end of a fine innings from Trumper, who did much to entertain the crowd during his stay. The 105-run stand between himself and Noble was finally broken by the Americans.

King finished his 10-over spell with yet another wicket, taking his tally to 5 for the innings. It was his second 5-wicket haul of the competition, whereas no other bowler managed even one. Australia, who at one point looked like scoring well above 200 would now have to settle for something much lesser.

As always, Bart King was off to a flyer with the bat in an Olympic final. But this time he made a slight error in judgement by driving one straight into the hands of his opposite number, who had him out caught and bowled for 17 off 13 balls. The United States task of chasing down 192 had just become a whole lot tougher in general.

The Americans kept milking runs off the Australian bowlers after King's dismissal. John Lester, who was enduring perhaps his worst ever season with the bat in the Olympics, started off confidently with a boundary off Noble. The out of form Conyers too managed to strike one off the seriously quick Tibby Cotter.

They lost another wicket in the form of Arthur Wood, who had been striking it well during the last couple of matches. Though they were well ahead of the required rate, the Americans were precariously poised having already lost 4 wickets and still needing another 134 runs to chase.

Harry Kortlang looked just the right sort of batsman to play a responsible knock in this situation. But he was undone by Bert Hopkins taking an absolute blinder at point to remove him for 22 just as he was getting settled at the crease. The United States had now lost half their team and had only two specialist batsmen remaining in Francis Bohlen and Christy Morris.

That was all they needed. Christy Morris and Francis Bohlen added 50 for the 6th wicket in quick time to put the pressure back on the Australians. The United States were now less than 50 runs away from victory.

Morris, who had already hit Jack O'Connor for six, replicated his feat off the bowling of Bert Hopkins. With every hit the Americans were inching closer to victory and there seemed to be little Monty Noble could do to stop them, despite having already tried out seven different bowlers.

Not with Bohlen still around and Percy Clark with him. Despite a first-class batting average of just 12.81 and an Olympic batting average of 11.89, Clark always bats with heart and can usually be relied upon in times of crisis. The 37-year old Bohlen, Australia's chief tormentor with the bat from their 1893 humiliation at the hands of the Gentlemen of Philadelphia, rediscovered his form of yesteryears to post a half-century when his team needed it the most. Ten years after winning a Gold medal for cricket at the 1896 Olympic Games at Athens, the United States had managed to win another Gold medal at the 1906 Intercalated Games at the very same venue of their first triumph.

Ten years following their 1896 triumph, the United States of America had reclaimed their former glory by winning a Gold medal for cricket at the 1906 Intercalated Games ahead of their more fancied Test-playing peers from Australia. Despite having lost the legendary George Patterson to retirement, the core of their team remained more or less the same as it was in 1896 with Bart King, Percy Clark, John Lester, Francis Bohlen, Henry Baily, Arthur Wood and Edward Cregar still part of the team. Though Lester endured a very poor tournament with the bat by his usually high standards and Cregar looked a pale shadow of the player he once was, new imports such as the talented Ranji Hordern from Australia and Philadelphia's very own Christy Morris more than made up for their lapses.

5AEjrjf.jpg

Australia were consigned to a Silver medal on this occasion, after having won two consecutive Gold medals on the trot in 1900 and 1904. It could be argued that they were a team in transition having recently lost great players such as Hugh Trumble, Joe Darling, Bill Howell to retirement, while some of their best players such as Clem Hill, Reggie Duff and Jack Saunders chose to stay behind in Australia rather than travel all the way to Greece for this so-called Olympic tournament whose status remains in doubt among many prominent sportspeople. But they still had Victor Trumper, Monty Noble, Warwick Armstrong, Tibby Cotter and Frank Tarrant among others in their team. The reality was that they just looked a tad underprepared, especially the batsmen as shown by the fact that it took them until the final match of the tournament to register so much as an individual half-century, and the absence of someone like Clem Hill didn't really help. As a result of their defeat in the final, Australia had now lost a match in the Olympics for the first time in more than 10 years. The team that last beat them before this match? You guessed it - the United States of America!

Xo1tV0N.jpg

Great Britain, who were among the biggest victims when it came to players refusing to tour (they could convince none of Sydney Barnes, KS Ranjitsinhji, Stanley Jackson, Jack Hearne or Tom Hayward), finished with a Bronze medal after defeating South Africa in the Bronze playoff. They made it mostly on the back of runs from the classy duo of CB Fry and Archie MacLaren. A costly 2-run defeat to the United States in the semi-final however, cost them the opportunity of qualifying for the final to battle it out with their Ashes rivals for Gold. Though the result might have been all too likely seeing as they've lost every Olympic final they've played till date, including three on the trot since 1896 of which two were lost in succession to the Australians.

Bart King, now arguably one of the best cricketers in the world and quite easily the best to not be playing Test cricket by a country mile, endured a stellar tournament during which he scored 110 runs at 36.67 (1 half-century) and claimed an awe-inspiring 11 wickets at 8.27 (including two 5-wicket hauls) from 3 matches. He was duly named Player of the Tournament for his feats, one of which including captaining the Americans to a Gold medal for cricket. CB Fry, who scored 159 runs from 3 matches at an average of 79.50 on some of the worst batting wickets seen in the Olympics recent history, could consider himself unfortunate to miss out due to a freakish player like King who could both bat and bowl on such wickets with utter surety.

The medal allocations for cricket at the 1906 Intercalated Games were as follows :-

We let the middle order milk runs way too easily. Congrats to the USA, a well deserved win. It'll be sad to not see them anynore in the Olympics.
