India Team Discussion

To be honest the Semi Final exit actually might play out well. Kohli will have less say in things. He got his 4 years and although we reached the semis the glaring issue of number 4th position was wide open. I liked what Harsha Bhogle said, we need an as good number 4 as Kohli plays at 3. Iyer can definitely play that role of a run a ball inning. Pandey is not consistent.

Also what is it with players showing disappointment in public over not getting selected. Gill and Gaikwad both were fantastic as openers in A games but do we need them no. With Dhawan back in the mix and management still showing some confidence in Rahul, Gill needs to keep working hard. He is really close and he was in the XI in NZ.
I can not completely deny what u said but Gill is such a batsman who can bat anywhere. His shot selection, range of shots, foot work and what not are just awesome. If u spend some days with a coach like Dravid, this will happen. Dravid's contribution is immense in shaping the Gill's abilities. Unfortunately we are missing Prithvi Shaw. But I feel, Gill has more composure than Shaw.

Guess the current set of selectors will stay in their current posts till the upcoming BCCI AGM (Annual General Meeting) on October 22. That's when the BCCI elections will also be held. Once that's done, a new set of selectors should take over.

Let's hope and pray that the incoming group is not as silly as the current lot. I hope the CoA adds more pedigree to the selectors role and makes it a priority that the selectors have played for India for a good chunk of matches and have done decently well in their roles as players. It becomes a laughing stock when guys like MSK Prasad are picked as selectors and that too as the chief selector.

On the MS Dhoni topic - (purely based on the reports that have been circulating in the media) I guess he will drag it on, similar to the likes of Harbhajan/Yuvraj/Gambhir/Sehwag and then when he is also ready to stop playing the IPL, he will probably announce official retirement at that time. But for all practical purposes, his India career is over. I don't buy this "Dhoni will be backup in case Pant gets injured for the T20 WC". If that happens, Karthik should step in as he has enough experience to replace Pant in case of injury. And we better groom a backup for Pant instead of hoping that Dhoni will fill that. Going back to Dhoni in case of injury, is such a backward step and one that will be ridiculous.

About Dhoni retirment - I think a lot of things are happening at the back. He willingly took a break of two months for army training. Fitness wise he is as good any other player in the team but the age factor we need to consider. No matter how fit you are, must respect age. From my observation abt Dhoni, he don't really believe in farewell n all. He just leaves without any noise. He has played enough and seen enough. Time for Pant (or any other) to take responsibility. This Grooming thing is a BS. If at all Indian team n Selectors really requires Dhoni's presence, make him as a mentor ;)

Gill needs to calm down and focus on his game and needs to avoid talking in media. So soon if he starts showing disappointment at not being selected, it could harm his reputation down the line. Due to seniority, Iyer and Pandey got above him. He just needs to keep working harder and push through.

Gill will be that guy who can open or bat in the middle order. He will give us flexibility. He is the future of India's batting and got to keep his head down
True. If he express his opinions like this, he might end up like Rayudu even after having great talent. He should understand that Indian team selections are different. Along with talent, patience plays a big role in one's selection.

Have anyone read this article. Is Indian team again going to have Ravi Shastri as Head Coach? I pray to God that it shouldn't happen. One more interesting news is that Jhonty Rhodes has applied for the India Fielding Coach position. One SA'n helped in bringing the WC after 28 years and hope another SA'n(if he has appointed) helps to lift the Indian Fielding standards a bit more

First of all it is an unnamed BCCI source - on top of that it is ETV

I would suggest ignoring this report.

Will Shastri comeback as the coach? Quite likely, if Kohli is given a say in the selection process

I think now the panel to select a coach is headed by Kapil Dev. I hope he will select the coach based on efficiency but not on the captain say

Recent reports have suggested that Kohli will have no say whatsoever in the new coach selection process. That gives hope that Shastri wont be re-elected as head coach. Anyways Shastri cant stay till 2023 WC since he will be past 60 in 2022 and BCCI has a rule where people over 60 cant stay in the support staff posts.

I know Jonty Rhodes is a world class fielder but not necessary that he translates all that into India's fielding. TBH, R Sridhar who is not as world class as Jonty, has uplifted India's fielding tremendously. You dont need a big name. All you need is someone who knows the techniques and has the drive to impart it onto the guys in the best way possible and encourage them to break the ceiling.

Same can be said for Bharat Arun.

It is official that Dhoni is spending two weeks with the Indian army at Jammu and Kashmir. Is it really the right thing that it is being announced in the media about his stay? How many army officers are going to be entrusted with the job of protecting Dhoni for the 2 weeks that he will be staying with them?

I wonder what is MSD trying to achieve with this brief stay with the army.

Yes. I wont mind if Bharat Arun and R Sridhar stay back in their posts. I dont want Shastri and Bangar to stay on. Bangar has been of no use and has not helped the batsmen much at all.

Byjus has taken over the sponsorship from OPPO who weren't willing to go ahead paying almost 5 crores a game. Literally it's an insane amount tbh but the new sponsor is going to pay what OPPO was supposed to pay and the contract period is same too.

Byjus is one hell of a shady company too. Not an enterprise that I would want on the jersey of our country.

"I was waiting for the Indian senior team to be announced on Sunday and I expected to be selected for at least one of the squads," Gill told CricketNext. "It was disappointing not to get picked but I am not going to spend time thinking over it. I'll keep scoring runs and performing to the best of my ability to impress the selectors.

"It was a fantastic series for me and team as well since we won with a 4-1 margin," Gill said. "Personally, I would have liked to carry on and score at least a couple of hundreds in those fifties. But I will learn from this experience. The biggest lesson that I have learned from my first West Indies tour is to try to curb my natural game depending on the match condition."

This is exactly what Gill told the media. I don’t see anything wrong with it personally. The man even ends it on a positive note saying that he is focusing on further impressing the selectors. If we are to crucify our players for expressing the slightest of natural disappointments, we might as well send in a bunch of robots to play cricket in the near future.

Also, Gill needs to play in the top three. We don’t need yet another ‘build an innings’ type of player in the middle order, especially when the rest of the cricketing world is moving ahead with playing proper middle order batsmen.

1. Rohit
2. Dhawan
3. Kohli
4. Iyer/Pandey (whoever impresses in the nets for the first game)
5. Pant
6. Jadhav
7. Jadeja

This will probably be my lineup for the ODIs. Can’t be arsed to select a lineup for the T20s when the BCCI themselves don’t treat it with as much importance as ODIs despite there being a World Cup in a year. :rolleyes

Probably just trying to give something back for the honor bestowed upon him by the army. He will be training with them as a patrolling office in Kashmir.

And this isn't the local police or something where they will have to give him protection etc. The army wouldn't take him up on his offer of service, if there was any risk involved.
