Indian Premier League - General Discussion

Ahmedabad and Lucknow as expected. The problem with IPL currently is lack of innovation. I get it that you are paying 7000 crore rupees (1 billion USD almost) but we should have had a team from Dharamshala or Kashmir ;) Would have loved to see teams playing in Kashmir or Dharamshala.

On the retention news buzz I have read, looks like you can retain max of 4 players. If they decide to retain 4 players, they have to spend a minimum of 40% of the total available amount. Each team has 90 crores for the players. No RTM allowed and Ahmedabad and Lucknow to get to pick 4 players each before auction. Based on the rules looks like following

Bangalore
  • Kohli
  • Siraj
  • Abd
  • Devdutt?
Chennai
  • Jadeja
  • Gaikwad
  • Sam
  • ??
Delhi - Totally worth spending 40% base on below
  • Pant
  • Iyer
  • Shikhar
  • ??
Kolkata - Is it worth to spend 40% base on the below?
  • Shubman
  • Iyer
  • Varun/Narine
  • Dre Russ
Mumbai
  • Rohit
  • Kishan
  • Bumrah
  • Hardik/Sky/Pollard
Punjab -?? I do not even know if they want to retain anyone? KL said he wants to move out, Mayank may be? Shami?

Rajasthan
  • Stokes
  • Archer
  • Sanju
  • ???
Hyderabad
  • Williamson
  • ?
  • ?
  • ?

Lucknow and Ahmedabad will have the opportunity to get some good names in Sky, KL, Mayank, Ashwin, Pandya brothers, etc. Punjab and Hyderabad too looks like will be building from ground up?

Damn, I really wanted a Kashmir team. Would have boosted the states economy so much and would have bought more tourism.

Probably a coincidence.

I mean they were given a list of cities to choose from. Ahmedabad has a capacity of 120,000 and Lucknow 50000 so it would make sense in terms of facilities. I am sure there was some politics behind it but which sport/country is out of it now a days?

Ironically Ahmedabad stadium is named after current prime minster from BJP and Lucknow former prime minister from BJP.

Lucknow and Ahmadabad is the next 2 franchise teams...

Looking at the current situation and people in charge, Gujarat and Uttar Pradesh is getting the IPL teams... I didn't had any doubt in that from the day 1, when they announced the 10 teams IPL...
This my reply at the time of 10 teams IPL announcement...

The amounts being shelled out are quite staggering! For Ahmedabad, it was widely tipped to be an IPL city-and I get the buzz. However, Lucknow going for 7200 crore is bizarre. For a company to invest this much amount into a Tier 3 city in India, its going to be tough for them to generate revenues from the same. If the BCCI expand it to a 12 team league (in 3 years time), the amounts that would be bid against the likes of Pune, Vizag,Kochi could be even more staggering than this.

Don't get me wrong- the league would expand from here on. I believe the idea is to create a mega 16 team league with promotions and relegations, akin to the Premier Leagues one has in football. Slowly, but steadily they are getting there.

Dharamsala was in the fray alongside Cuttack, Indore and Guwahati. Apart from Indore, none of the other cities got a bid. Again, for such cities to come back, some basic economic aspects need to be satisfied:
1. Classy International Airport
2. Availability of 5 star hotels
3. Ability to expand business
4. Support from local government

Not an expert, are both big BJP areas?

You are spot on! Lot of talk as to why cities like Pune, Vizag were excluded from the bidding here. The simple reason being that Ahmedabad and Lucknow belong to BJP strongholds which would be going into regional elections next year. The rationale from the BJP on this occasion being that they wanted to tap into the Hindi speaking market. IMO, presence of an IPL franchise wouldn't suddenly evoke the Hindi speakers to start following the game. In India, any cricketing activity can give you instant revenues.

I am not sure how the picking is going to work here. I believe the existing franchisees will be allowed to retain first and then the new ones can get a choice of 4 players- perhaps they'll use a draft system like they did back in 2017.

In order to make matters and the auction interesting, the BCCI should ask Lucknow and Ahmedabad to pick 4 players on the day of the mega auction itself.
