( 16 Men Squad arrived at the Airport in Johannesburg )
Welcome back to the Star Sports and this time, we bring you the details of the squad which arrived in SouthAfrica Today afternoon. Within the short period after Champions Trophy, the selection of the team was done immediately & they arrived at the airport of Johannesburg in SouthAfrica.
Players At the Airport,Johannesburg
The team of 16 players were named for the SouthAfrican tour based on the performances in recent series in International level as well as Domestic level. Based on Domestic level performance, there was a inclusion of Dinesh Karthik who has shown several promising signs. The 16Men squad includes,
Indian Squad
* R Dravid (captain) * VVS Laxman (vice-captain) * MS Dhoni (wicketkeeper) * G Gambhir * SC Ganguly * Harbhajan Singh * W Jaffer * KD Karthik * Z Khan * A Kumble * Yuvraj Singh * MM Patel * V Sehwag * IK Pathan * S Sreesanth * SR Tendulkar
Well, Jaffer & Gambhir are both included with one going to be a backup opener if Sehwag fails in opening slot. Its evident that Sehwag did not have much dominating series in both Champions Trophy as well as in Malaysia.With the different conditions in SouthAfrica, the backup for opening was included by the team selectors.
Ganguly has been retained in the squad after a promising Century in WestIndies which was the last test match played & infact it was his comeback. With more pace bowling friendly, Only one of the spin twins are expected to be included in the playing XI.
Also, there is another player making a comeback in Test level. ZaheerKhan, after good domestic performances, is being included in this series. He actually made a comeback in ODIs in semifinals & went for runs but the conditions were against bowlers that time. So its expected more from ZaheerKhan in SouthAfrica. Also its going to be testing time for another left arm bowler, Irfan Pathan.
As soon as players arrived at the airport, Indian Coach & Skipper expressed their confidence on this tour,
:Well, this is going to be one of the challenging tours for us. Since we had a great last tournament it definitely helps in raising our confidence level. The conditions in SouthAfrica are quite different from Indian conditions but still, we are prepared to face the challenge.
:Having played well in Champions Trophy, India will go all out with loads of confidence for the Test series. We have got to play good cricket regularly if we want to win games especially withWorld Cup coming up.Its never going to be easy though to win SouthAfrica in their home conditions but nothing is impossible at the same time.. We will try our level best & lets see what happens!
Thus both coach and Skipper expressed their confidence for the upcoming series. Apart from these two, we also got comments from the former coach,Wright. India's former coach,John Wright has a few pointers for the current side :
" Winning in South Africa is tough but not impossible.The starts that India get at the top of the order would be vital to their plans.Individually, Indian bowlers have done well in South Africa, but as a team they have failed. More than anything, particularly with a young attack, you have to bowl in partnerships.Dhoni could be the special player for India in this tour. ", says Wright.
So everything ready for this tour to get started. India is to play a warmup game in just a one day break which is a 4day match. After that comes the test series which has lot of challenges for India to face the home team, SouthAfrica.
Thats all from the studio and we will join you again after the warmup game to see how Indians perform in their first game in SouthAfrican conditions. As mentioned earlier, the telecast rights for warmup game was not given to StarSports and so we wud be only able to show you the scorecards after the play. Stay Tuned for more cricketing actions.
