Speed Gun

Pretty sure the onus is on Star, who is producing the broadcast. And the speed guns should be installed by the grounds.

I thought it is the ICC who controls the gadgets- the speed gun .Hot Spot cameras etc etc. I don't think ESS has got anything to do with it.

You really thought they might have fixed it now, its been over a week. I cant remember any previous games in sub-continent having this problem, but thats a different broadcaster isn't it??

A couple of things.

Four years ago the host broadcaster were Century TV, who did a terrible job in terms of graphics and picture quality. I believe ESPN Star Sports have done the host broadcasting all ICC events since, starting with the World Twenty20 in South Africa in 07.

Also, in the 1999 World Cup, there was no speed gun until the knockout stages because the ECB/ICC couldn't find a sponsor to pay for it!!

I'm fairly certain it is up to the production company to set up things such as the speed gun since it is not required by any rules or laws of the ICC. Hot spot is different because it was going to be part of DRS. Before hotspot was being used in DRS, it was up to the company producing the broadcast (such as Sky or something) to pony up for the technology.

The broadcasting situation in the subcontinent is pretty messed up. There are a few players that I can think of: Nimbus, ESS, Ten Sports. I think Nimbus owns the broadcast rights for all games played in India. I think Ten Sports owns the rights for Bangladesh/Pakistan/UAE/etc.

Now here's where it becomes interesting. I believe the company that has the broadcast rights can choose whatever producer they want to actually produce the telecast. They are only going to be broadcasting what has been produced. I think Nimbus produces their broadcasts, as does ESS. But it is also possible that Nimbus is producing this broadcast on behalf of ESS. As I recall, ESS won the rights for production back in 07, as the poster above me mentioned.

It's all a bit complicated!

Poor work by the ICC with the speedometer and Powerplay notification displays. They strike the Powerplays out with a red line that almost doesnt show unless you really close into it. And the speedometer is an embarassment. Their other graphics are good, but these two are very bad.

Yep agree with this. The Powerplay display is just STUPID. It confuses even the hardcore fans, let alone fans who don't know what a PP is. The other thing that bugs me is on the bottom bar when they show the score of the 2 batsmen. There is an asterix against the player who is on strike even if he's on the right hand side of the screen. It's not intuitive. The player on strike should be highlighted better than that or on the left hand side.

The asterisk is a standardized way to denote which batsman is on strike.
