Queensland draw with Tasmania
Man of the match: Joe Burns
Joe Burns was released from the test squad to play this match, and he made the most of it, with 177 runs across the match.
When KL Rahul and Murali Vijay strode out to the middle of Adelaide Oval after tea on day 4, India had an incredibly achievable task ahead of them. It would be their 6th highest successful chase in tests if it was achieved, but the pitch still looked good to bat on, and Australia had arguably one of their weakest attacks ever for a home test. Murali Vijay unfortunately could not make the most of it, as Siddle would claim his wicket after a poorly hit drive landed straight in Chris Tremain's hands at mid off. Australia's leg spinner Fawad Ahmed would get the wicket of Pujara, which brought the captain to crease at 2/56. The day would finish with India 2/77, with the match firmly in the balance.
Peter Handscomb takes the catch of Cheteshwar Pujara
Day 5 saw nothing but Indian dominance, as Virat Kohli and KL Rahul plundered the Australian bowlers all around Adelaide Oval. Kohli would pass 50, as Rahul closed in on a 2nd ton for the match. India would be 2/165 at lunch on day 5, with the target now less than 100 away. Kohli would finally fall for 83, but the damage was done, and India were only 42 runs away from the target. KL Rahul had brought up his century, his 3rd against Australia and Rishabh Pant would hit his way to 20* after a mini Scott Boland inspired collapse saw Rahane and Sharma fall cheaply. India would cruise to a 5 wicket win, and claim a 1-0 lead in the series.
Captain Virat was at his best in the chase, finishing on 83.
No surprise to anyone as KL Rahul was awarded with man of the match for his twin tons. His brilliant batting guided India to the first time it has won the first match of a test series in Australia. Scott Boland was the stand out bowler of the match with 7 wickets, and looks to have secured a place in the Australian line up. The next match is the first test match in the brand new Perth Stadium, as Australia will desperately looking to regroup and turn the series around.
KL Rahul's twin centuries guide India to a famous test victory.
Cricket Australia announce banned players will be available for Boxing Day.
Cricket Australia have dropped an absolute bombshell, with the banned players from the Cape Town test being available to play for Australia from the Boxing Day Test (3rd test), and onwards. However the permanent bans for Steve Smith, David Warner and Cameron Bancroft remain in affect, and there was no update around whether those bans would ever be lifted. There is one caveat with this announcement however, and it is that only 3 players from that side can be selected in one match. Cricket Australia hope that limiting the amount of influence these players can have on the field, will prevent another incident like the one in Cape Town from ever happening again.
Many players from that Cape Town test, will be hoping it wasn't their last.
In news for the 2nd test, Glenn Maxwell has been added to Australia's test match squad ahead of the test in Perth. Australia and India are both looking at playing with no front line spinner in Perth, and Australia may bring Maxwell's all-round abilities into the team to help balance a side with no front line spinner. He had a fantastic shield match with Victoria just days ago, finishing the match with 129 runs and 4 wickets, bringing his incredible white ball form into the red ball.
Scores of 95 and 34 against WA, have seen Maxwell added to the test squad.
India have been struck with an opening batsmen problem as Murali Vijay's fails in the first test highlighted how out of form the batsmen has been, and Prithvi Shaw has been sent home after a tour ending ankle injury. Mayank Agarwal and Hardik Pandya are being flown over to join the Indian squad, however they will not be available for the 2nd test. It is expected Hanuma Vihari or Rohit Sharma will open the batting along side KL Rahul in Perth.
Handscomb, Head 50's as Australia grind runs on gruelling first day.
With Australia 0-1 down in the series, changes would be swung to try and take advantage of the pace friendly wicket in Perth. Fawad Ahmed would be replaced by quick Michael Neser, who would be making his test debut, while Kurtis Patterson would find his way out of the side, with Glenn Maxwell being recalled to the test team to bring his all round skills to the team. India would also swing 2 changes, with Umesh Yadav coming in to replace Ashwin, while as expected Murali Vijay had been dropped, with Hanuma Vihari coming in to bat at 6, while Rohit Sharma moved up to open for the first time in his test career.
Cameron White would win the toss and elect to bat. However it would be India who would take the early advantage, as both Harris (17) and Finch (14) would get starts, but be unable to go on with them. Peter Handscomb had been elevated to 3 with the departure of Patterson from the team, and would grind away as he was joined by White. They would put together a partnership of 55, before not long after the lunch interval, Ishant Sharma would claim his 2nd victim of the test, having White caught at 2nd slip by captain Kohli. This brought Travis Head to the crease, fresh off his maiden test hundred. He and Handscomb would combine beautifully, both passing 50 and taking Australia to 3/191, before the part time spin of Hanuma Vihari would see Travis Head caught in the the deep.
The unlikely partnership breaker! Hanuma Vihari dismissed Travis Head to end a 94 run partnership.
Glenn Maxwell, playing in his first test in Australia, would knuckle down in a very un-Maxwell like knock to see Australia through to stumps, along side Peter Handscomb who had battled nearly all day, to finish 65 unbeaten overnight. Maxwell would finish on 20, and Australia would wind up on 4/218 at the end of days play. Despite not picking up many wickets, India were brilliant with the ball, and made it extremely difficult for the Aussies to score. Quick wickets early tomorrow, and India are certainly still on top in this match.
Peter Handscomb battled away to finish 65* at the close of play.
Handscomb Ton sees Australia in control of 2nd test.
The game was very much in the balance on the morning of day 2, with Handscomb and Maxwell looking to build their partnership to push Australia ahead of the game. Unfortunately Maxwell would fall early in the morning to a brilliant inswinger from Shami, as he continued his brilliant start to the series. Matthew Wade would fall quickly after for 8 and it left Australia 6/251. Peter Handscomb would find a handy ally in debutant Michael Neser, as they would take the total close to 300, before Bumrah would get through Neser's defence for his first wicket of the innings. Handscomb would continue on however, and make a gutsy 299 ball hundred, spending 438 minutes at the crease and taking Australia over 300.
Peter Handscomb was the rock for Australia, as he brought up his 3rd Test century.
An to no one's surprise it was Shami who would eventually dismiss the Victorian for 103, and with his dismissal the Australian's innings would end rather quickly, as they were bowled out for 322. Shami would finish with 4/82, with Ishant Sharma claiming 3/65. 322 looked slightly under par for Australia, however the scoring rate of the Australian's showed that it was certainly not an easy pitch to score.
Mohammad Shami was the pick of the Indian bowlers, claiming 4 wickets to take his tally to 10 for the series.
When India came out to bat, their new look opening partnership got off to the worst possible start, as Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul were both dismissed for ducks, by a brilliant opening spell from Jhye Richardson. At 2/14 it was only Pujara and Kohli to rebuild the innings, and that's exactly what they did. Pujara would find his way to 46, before Peter Siddle would get Pujara to chop on, ending his innings. Kohli would get to 49 before Glenn Maxwell would get his first test wicket in Australia, with a sharp catch at slip by Aaron Finch. Ajinkya Rahane would later by Michael Neser's first test victim, another catch for Finch in the slips, before Hanuma Vihari and Rishabh Pant would see out the remaining overs, with India finishing on 5/160.
In his first test on home soil, in front of his home WA crowd, Jhye Richardson was scintillating with the new ball.
A quick end to this partnership tomorrow morning would see Australia looking at a chance of a healthy first innings lead.
Pant's 90 and Shami's brilliant spell leave test in the balance. India started day 3 in Perth at 5/160, still 162 runs behind the Australian first innings total. The Indian pair of Rishabh Pant and Hanuma Vihari would add 29 runs, before the latter was removed by Glenn Maxwell, trapped in front for 26. Shami and then Ishant Sharma would fall quickly with India still 90 runs behind. However this is when Pant found his useful ally, as Umesh Yadav would battle away as they took India's score from 8/232 to 9/284, when Rishabh was finally dismissed by Boland on 90. Umesh would go on the attack himself after the dismissal of Pant, but could only add another 12 runs for the final wicket, as India were bowled out for 296, 26 runs short of Australia's first innings.
Rishabh Pant's 90 (151) helped India be within touching distance of Australia's first innings total. The Australian 2nd innings started with a disaster as Marcus Harris would be run out in a terrible mix-up in just the first over. Aaron Finch decided to put the foot down, and took the attack to the Indian opening bowlers as he smashed his way to 36. Desperate for the partnership to end, Kohli would bring Shami back very early in the piece, and this was a masterstroke of a decision. He would first get Aaron Finch with a short ball that would fall into the lap of Umesh Yadav at deep fine leg, before getting Handscomb LBW for 9, and knocking over the dangerous head for 1. Just like that Australia had lost 3/5, and were 4 down with a lead of only 74 runs.
Mohammad Shami does it again for India! 3/5 in 8 balls, as he blows the test wide open on day 3
Cameron White and Glenn Maxwell would see the day out, building a strong 60 run partnership that has now steadied the innings for Australia. Their lead is still only 134 and India know that with early wickets in the morning, they could be chasing a sub-200 total.
Gripping Day 5 to come as test hangs in the balance.
Australia would resume play at 4/108, with skipper Cameron White and fellow Victorian Glenn Maxwell at the crease. They would look to continue to build the Australian lead as their partnership passed 100 mark, and Glenn Maxwell passed 50. With Australia's lead sitting at 173, Jasprit Bumrah would get the breakthrough India needed, getting Cameron White to edge one to Sharma in the cordon. Matthew Wade and Maxwell would continue on their way, with a counter attacking partnership, but that would be short lived as Shami would strike, claiming Maxwell as his 4th wicket of the innings.
Maxwell has made the most of his test return, hitting a fantastic 88 in the 2nd innings.
Australia at 6/199 and a lead of 225, needed the tail to wag to set a defendable total. Matthew Wade would play a brilliant innings as he attacked hard, while the tail attempted to hang around with him. By the time Scott Boland was dismissed by Bumrah, Austraila's tail had added 71 runs, and set India 297 to win. Matthew Wade would finish on an unbeaten 65 off 87 balls, his best knock of the series. Shami would finish with 4 wickets, while Bumrah claimed 3.
Matthew Wade played a crucial hand, finishing unbeaten on 65.
India would come out to bat and again Sharma would be dismissed for 11 by Maxwell, with his first stint as a test opener being a failure in both innings. Cheteshwar Pujara and KL Rahul would steady the ship, and make a big dent in the chase, before Peter Siddle would get a mistimed drive from KL Rahul to fall to Michael Neser at mid off. This brought the skipper to the crease, who alongside Pujara would see India to stumps, finishing on 2/128, still requiring 169 to win.
Pujara and Kohli see out the day, finishing on 49* and 22* respectively.
Pujara and Pant see India home, as BGT is retained.
India's task of 169 runs to win looked simple enough heading into day 5, and with Kohli and Pujara at the crease, it looked as if they would do without breaking a sweat. Kohli and Pujara would continue to build into the lead, as they both passed 50 and took the chase within under 100 runs to win. Peter Siddle would eventually find Kohli's outside edge for a brilliant 77, ending a 141 run partnership between the captain and Pujara. Jhye Richardson would then provide a double strike, dismissing Pujara and Rahane within 1 over, as India lost 3-8, to give Australia a glimmer of hope.
Cheteshwar Pujara's best innings of the tour sees him to 87.
Vihari and Pant again would come together and steady the ship for India as their 36 run partnership took the sting out of the game, leaving India only needing 35 to win. Shami would come in and hold up an end, while Rishabh Pant would continue to score freely from the other end, seeing India home, and achieving their 6th biggest 4th innings run chase in their history. Mohammad Shami would be awarded with man of the match, and India have already retained the Border-Gavaksar Trophy. This leaves with only needing at least a draw from the remaining 2 games in Melbourne and Sydney, to become the first Asian team to win a test series in Australia.
Cool as you like, Rishabh Pant guided India home in Perth with an unbeaten 45.
5 additions to the Australian Test Sqaud ahead of Boxing Day.
Australia are looking to turn their fortunes around on boxing day, and with the bans having being lifted on 8 of the players involved in the Cape Town debacle, they certainly will feel they can turn this 2-0 deficit around. 5 players have been instantly recalled to the test squad. Batsmen, Usman Khawaja and Shaun Marsh return to the squad, while bowlers, Josh Hazlewood, Pat Cummins and off spinner Nathan Lyon also are recalled. Only 3 of these players are able to play in this test, so 2 will miss out, but all of them will bring vital experience and energy to the squad that could help rejuvenate Australia's chances of a comeback in the series.
Shaun Marsh has been fantastic for WA, with 572 runs @ 81 so far this season.
Unfortunately with these players returning, it means their is players that are removed from the squad. Kurtis Patterson and Chris Tremain, who both made their test debuts in the first test have been dropped from the squad, as well as Joe Burns and Fawad Ahmed. A tough break for Burns after his fantastic shield form looked likely to get him back into the test side, however the return of Khawaja and Marsh who are both capable of opening the innings, sees him lose his spot in the squad.
Nathan Lyon's been in fine from in the shield with 24 wickets @ 19.92.
The question for the Australian's now is - which 3 players of the 5 do they choose to return to the test team. If they choose 3 at all of course. One things almost certain, with Fawad Ahmed's removal from the squad, it's almost a guarantee we see Nathan Lyon lining up at the MCG. So that will leave Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, Usman Khawaja and Shaun Marsh battling for 2 positions in the side.
Australian Test Squad for 3rd Test
Cameron White (c) Aaron Finch Peter Handscomb Marcus Harris Travis Head Usman Khawaja Shaun Marsh
Matthew Wade (vc)
Glenn Maxwell Michael Neser
Scott Boland Pat Cummins Josh Hazlewood Nathan Lyon Jhye Richardson Peter Siddle
Home town heroes stand up for Australia on Boxing Day.
Cameron White's impressive run at the toss continued on boxing day, as the local Victorian would win the toss and ask his new opening combination to walk out to the middle. Shaun Marsh had won the battle to reclaim his test spot, but due to the fantastic form of the middle order, he was forced to move up and open the innings, alongside Marcus Harris. Aaron Finch would be the man to fall out of the side. Pat Cummins and Nathan Lyon would also return to the test side, replacing Peter Siddle and Michael Neser. India made 1 change with Mayank Agarwal making his test debut in place of Rohit Sharma.
Let the redemption arc begin! A 50 on return for Shaun Marsh.
It was India who would draw first blood as Ishant Sharma would break through the defences of Marcus Harris early on Boxing Day morning. Shaun Marsh was fantastic on return, and he and Handscomb would stabilize the innings, putting together a partnership of 78, with Marsh bringing up 50 on his return. With the skipper now at the crease, 2 Victorians would find themselves together on Boxing Day against a fired up Indian attack. And hometown boys were not deterred by the fierce bowling of the Indians, seeing through to tea with the score at 2/160.
The Australian captain finally goes on with a start, finishing unbeaten on 73.
It wasn't long for India to strike after the tea break, as that man again, Mohammad Shami would strike trapping Handscomb dead in front for 69. Travis Head would fall soon after to a bit of Jadeja brilliance and Australia were now 4/187, with India gaining momentum fast. But again, another hometown hero would see Australia through as Maxwell came out and counter-attacked in typical Maxwell fashion. Together with the captain they would see Australia to stumps, having put on 57 and taking Australia to 4/244. 1 wicket for each of the Indian bowlers on a grinding day.
Advantage Australia in Melbourne after Maxwell century.
Glenn Maxwell and Cameron White were looking to continue on their merry way on day 2, but with just the 2nd ball of the day, Jasprit Bumrah would take the outside of edge of White, and Vihari made no mistake in the gully. Maxwell would be undeterred, and continued on his way, passing 50 in 79 deliveries, while Wade battled away at the other end. The 2 would put on 83, taking Australia to 5/327. Wade would be dismissed by Shami for 33, with Maxwell closing in on his 100. However finding an ally in the tail was proving difficult as Australia would go from 5/327 to 8/345 within the blink of an eye. Maxwell would flick into T20 mode, as he started to brutally smash the Indians all around the ground, bringing up a spectacular 100 off 152 balls. His 2nd test century, both having come against India. He would eventually be the last man to fall, on 132 from 193. Australia were bowled out for 387, Mohammad Shami again the pick of the bowlers with 4/95 from 35 overs.
Glenn Maxwell's 2nd test century saw Australia take control of the Boxing Day Test.
As India came out to bat, it was disaster for the debutant Mayank Agarwal, as he would fall for a duck to the bowling of Jhye Richardson. KL Rahul and Chesteshwar Pujara would put on a nice partnership before Nathan Lyon would strike, giving him his first test wicket in over 9 months. Yet again it was Pujara and Kohli in the middle, attempting to build the innings. It looked likely they would manage to do it again, as Pujara passed 50, and the partnership being 67 runs strong. But again it would be that man again, Nathan Lyon who would force an errant drive from Kohli who would drag it back on to his stumps. From there Ajinkya Rahane and Pujara would see out the rest of the day, with India finishing 3/126, 261 runs behind Australia.
Pujara remains unbeaten on 73 to steady India's innings after early wobbles.
