GROUP A Preview

A very tough group with the hosts, the young guns and the underachievers. South Africa hold some of the most destructive batsman in the world, and will go in as big favourites to win this championship on home soil. South Africa will be led by young captain, Graeme Smith. South Africa will be the team to beat this tournament along with Australia. Bangladesh will give them a big challenge with their young side that should suit the shorter form of the game. More surprises can happen in 20 overs and they will certainly be up for creating some surprises this tournament. Mohammad Ashraful will lead them out and will be looking to create some Bangladeshi history in the process. West Indies come in as one of the weakest teams in the competition. With many poor results and with such an inexperienced team, they are far from the team of the great 70's and 80's. Without Brian Lara they come with Ramneresh Sarwan as captain and he hopes to push his team out of their bad run of form.

Game of the Group

Now this is a tough one with Bangladesh vs either team being a big game, especially after South Africa being beaten by the Tigers during the World Cup. But the opening game of the tournament has to be the game of the group. South Africa vs West Indies at Johannesburg. The match has already sold out and with many stars on show it should be a great day out. The game is showed live on Sky Sports 1.

Players to look out for

Graeme Smith - Possibly the biggest hitting opener of the tournament along side the likes of Jayasuriya, Gilchrist and Hayden. Can turn a fantastic bowling attack in to a village line-up with some huge hitting. His un-orthodox technique gives him big room to free his arms and hitting all around the ground. Leg side is his favoured side, so spectators, watch out!

Shivnerine Chanderpaul - By far the most experienced West Indian player who can take attacks apart as well as hold an innings together. With his brilliant timing there is no need for him to slog as he can get runs quickly using pure cricket shots. With his crab like movement at the crease it can put bowlers off and he is more than capable of taking advantage. Bangladesh and South Africa beware.

Mohammad Ashraful - Could become the greatest Bangladeshi batsman to ever have played cricket. At only 23 years of age he has scored 3 test match hundreds and 1 ODI hundred. He has already played over 100 ODI matches and has the potential to become a fantastic captain of Bangladesh. His innovative batting style allows him to score all around the wicket and cause opposition captains much discomfort. A player that can win matches for Bangladesh and may well do in the 2 matches in group A.

Predicted Group Standings

South Africa 1st - 6 points
West Indies 2nd - 3 points
Bangladesh 3rd - 0 points
