A Decade At A Close - what has been the best innings of the last ten years?

Test: Nathan Astle's 223 against England (2002)
ODI: Herschelle Gibbs' 175 against Australia (2006)
T20: Chris Gayle's 117* against South Africa (2007)

It seems I have fresh memories of that brilliant game. Definitely one of the best innings of the decade if not the best.

The back bone of South Africa's innings that day which allowed them to chase such a massive total.

Kevin Pietersen's last day 158
Kumar Sangakarras 192 against the Aussies

Brian Lara scored an almost flawless 400 in 2004, and is barely getting a mention. Work that one out.

Antigua is as flat as glass though, even Gayle hit a triple there a year later.

Hmarka, yeah, Sangakkara's 192 was brilliant, koertzen giving him out wrongly is still one of my most frustrating memories from cricket. Should have made a double and would have liked to see what happened given the target rapidly getting closer.

It was a shocker eh, ball hits him in the head and he's out! lol

a) Flat pitch
b) Dead Rubber
c) English bowling ;)

Great innings, but lacks any context. Didn't win a game or save a series or master a fantastic bowling attack on a difficult pitch or anything.

Came to the wicket at 4 for 41, NZ chasing 350 for victory.

ODI: Mark Gillespie - 28 against Australia, in the same match.
I was out of my seat for this one. He Came to the wicket when we needed 50 off the last 5 over's, with just two wickets in hand. He played some of the best shots in the book, including numerous french cut and edges, as he blasted 28 off just 15 to take us all but home.

Of course I'm being a bit biased. :D

Mike Hussey v SA MCG 2005, brilliant knock.

Gilchrist 203* V SA 2002, brilliant stuff.

Mark Butcher 173* v Aus 2001

Lara 200 v Aus Adelaide 2005

Gilchrist ton v Eng Perth 2006

Steve Waugh v Eng SCG 2003- awesome stuff

Still scored the runs, and made a score which has not been matched by anyone in the history of Test cricket. Other players have played on flat pitches, in dead rubbers and against English bowling of course (:p) but not made 400. It was an incredible demonstration of concentration, manipulating the field and sheer talent. How anyone can disregard that innings just because it was on a flat pitch is beyond me.

I'm not sure I'd rank it as my favourite innings, or the best of the last 10 years, but it certainly deserves a mention, and should certainly be in the top 5 at the very least.
