Dhoni is India's new captain, was it the right choice?

It doesn't really matter if he's captained well in other sides. Vikram Solanki has captained brilliantly for England A and has captained a lot of England's senior side. Would he be named as England's captain if Colly or Vaughan stepped down? No, because he's nowhere near the first team.

Kaif is near India's first team though.

Sorry I used the wrong wording. I meant, "No, because he's nowhere near the captaincy"

This is because England has a solid domestic infrastructure and a nice wide base of players with good leadership skills.

India does not. As you said, you can't figure out anyone to do it. And if there is no viable option in the active squad, got for the reserves.

He just doesn't seem the type of character to make a good captain in my opinion. He's a playboy, playboy's don't make good captains. Plus I agree with what Kev says, as soon as he loses a game his head will be straight on the chopping block such is the fickle nature of a lot of Indian fans.

Also, asking him to wicket keep, captain and to be the pioneer of six hitting is practically ruining his career before it's properly started.

Playboy? from where do you get that impression?

It's nothing to do with him, it's the way everyone hounds him and how every woman and homosexual man on the planet fancies the pants off of him. I just don't think he has the nerves of steel that a captain requires.

Kaif is a good choice, but I too agree he needs to first come to the team and give some decent performances. We can always change our captains later when performances arent upto the mark.

Right now, Dhoni is the favorite for being the ODI captain. For test matches, Sachin until we find a good guy who can handle our test team. Dhoni is not ready for the tests. Or give it to Dada for the tests. But our ODI team needs to have these youngsters. On a maximum, only 1 of the seniors should play in each match. The youngsters showed today that they can do well in the shorter format.

I expected him to give up the ODI captaincy but not the Test captaincy. That surprised me.

Shame. He made some bad decisions, and got the criticism. Is he retiring, or just giving up the captaincy, and continuing?

I can already see more people giving a toss about this then Fleming stepping down/being replaced.

:/
That's because there are like 6 New Zealanders on planetcricket.

I think Dravid just bowed to pressure in the end, India need a more stable leadership setup than their recent changes of vice captan for each tour.

He has just relinquished captaincy. He is not retiring any soon. We can very well have Dravid, the batsman who is one of the best in the world.

Once the seniors retire, it could become easy to have a stable set up.

Good at least he is staying around.

guys they will contact sachin first i think he will say no then they will have to ganguly for that 12odi agiast pak and aussies i think u need a senior player for this series sachin or soruav cant have yuvi or some one else

Sachin would be the only choice. They can't give it to a younger player like Dhoni or Yuvraj yet because they might not be experienced enough for the responsibility, although they look promising. Dhoni seems like a better choice than Yuvraj, but he'd also have to wicketkeep...it'd be a lot of responsibility and he's still relatively young. Ganguly isn't a good choice because it's not long before he retires. Tendulkar seems like the only choice because he has more time left on him than Ganguly and has the required experience. Didn't he even show an interest in the captaincy when Chappell retired?
