With the boundary ropes being brought in closer everyday and the batting paradises we see everyday, I'm surprised no one has done it. They all tend to choke just going past Anwar's record much less 200.
There's a whole host of things that would need to be just right :-
- boundaries close enough to make for plenty of fours and sixes
- batsman at the crease long enough to face the balls required to score that kind of tally. A run a ball would mean they'd have to face 2/3 of the (legal) deliveries, more likely they'd have to hit a double off 150 balls or less
- batting conditions favourable, bowling attack not threatening (much) and
- a bit of luck, to be hitting enough fours and sixes would not be easy without offering up a chance - a good bowler would throw in enough yorkers and slower balls to make attacking every ball risky
Let's face it, I don't think it's choking or because it can't be done, more likely that in spite of flatter wickets and bigger scores, it is just VERY difficult to do. Like scoring 400 was a rarity and took a very long time before someone cracked it, it needed a lot of factors in favour of Lara on top of his ability and the match situation such that records could be factored in alongside or ahead of winning. It would probably have to be an opener which reduces it to a smaller number, or number three coming in early.
Gotta laugh at the suggestion Afridi could do it, he averages a meagre 23.18 in ODIs, his SR is good enough but the problem is that he only stays at the crease 26 balls on average. (SR x average, not an exacted figure gained from somewhere) With only four hundreds in 275 knocks and a HS of 109 I think I could put my house on Afridi not getting 200. He's opened 145 times so it's not as if he hasn't had chances to make bigger scores.
At the moment I'd suggest Sehwag could do it, might need a bit of help from a groundsman making a nice flat track with boundaries nice and short and perhaps a seven match series against Bangladesh - might need to win the toss and/or bat first mind
