Speaking of Plunkett :p, McGrath looks like he's pumped up for the Ashes now wit some vigorous training going on at his academy :D

Because I'm sure Giles would've spun earlier on in this match when Monty wasn't.

Monty has had several big turners today, Giles would've been no where near spinning them like that because he simply doesn't spin the ball.

It's because Panesar is actually capable of turning the ball and he just had an off day. Giles was always incapable of spinning it, and had the odd good day where he could spin it. Well, the rough played a huge part in that too

Panesar wasn't spinning it as such but in some ways he was, because the ball was coming from a wideish angle and straightening.

Once again this is not the England v Pakistan thread. Please use this thread for news relating to the future ashes series not any current happenings.

Yes, but the Panesar vs Giles debate has relevance to the Ashes, as we are arguing as to which one should be playing against Australia.

There is no need to have this discussion in two threads though. If you want to talk about how a player is performing in a current match use the thread for that series.

Understood. I won't mention any of Panesar's antics in the current series. Although the Giles vs Panesar debate is an import one, I won't discuss it in this thread.

But then Giles isn't playing in the Current series, whereas both might be playing in the Ashes, so surely this is the proper place to discuss it?

What Kev is getting at is that people are discussing Montys performances from the current game (Including me :D)

When discussing who the spinner will be on the Ashes tour, it is perfectly natural to discuss Panesar's performances in the current series. As long as discussion of the games themselves are kept in the appropriate thread, there isn't anything wrong with discussing Monty's bowling in the current series.

So on a message forum, a mod comes along and kills the discussion? Nice work.

They aren't killing the discussion, they are making sure we follow the rules and stay on topic.

So to get back on topic; James Anderson has stepped up his comeback from injury as he bowled a few light overs today so he could well play a part in te Ashes.

We've got Chris Read. You've got Gilchrist. Who Flintoff always gets out. It will be an interesting battle between them two.

Our batsman should be pretty good on Australian pitches, and our bowlers should be unstoppable... especialy if Freddie gets fully fit.

England are depleted, and if they bring their current team to Australia, I doubt that they would be able to even save a test...(ok i know that a bit harsh)
I see no way that England can keep the Ashes this winter. Australia are desperate, they want it more, they're at home, I just don't see England beating them.
Firstly, England fans are complaining that Vaughn will not be fit and theyre treating it like it's a huge blow. Ok, what im about to say is really going to get me bombarded by the england fans...but....ill say it anyways.....Vaughn is soooo overrated its not even funny. I agree he is a good captain, but Flintoff is nearly as good as captaining. Vaughn as a batsman is better than no other bat on his team, barring Chris read. Alaistair Cook can makeup for the runs that Vaughn would have scored, or would not have scored... Bell, Cook, Trescothic, Strauss, Flintoff, Petersen, Collingwood are all better batsmen that Vaughn.

If England are to challenge Australia, they need Simon Jones fit. They need Hoggard, Harmison, S.Jones, and Flintoff fit ready. Ashley Giles can provide useful runs at no.8, but his bowling is about as good as your average 17 year old indian kid. He would not find a spot on any other test team besides for Bangladesh and Zimbabwe. The guy is a bits and pieces cricketer, Penesar would be a much better choise, sure maybe each game Englands total would be 10 or 15 runs less, or maybe not... but Penesar would be 10 times more dangerous that Giles, and would help his team pick up more wickets.

If England can have bring the exact same team that won the ashes, then I think they would give Australia a challenge.....but I still strongly believe that Australia will eat them for breakfast.
