That sort of result was anticipated. We need to win that bronze medal now. That'd be a great reward for our sublime efforts . We'll go unchanged :)

Argentina's captain John Paul hung on heroically amidst a devastating spell from Herbert Wookey to lead his team to a Bronze medal for cricket in the 1920 Olympics. The latter ended up on the losing side despite a Herculean effort with both bat and ball in the match for Canada, who finished at 4th place as a consequence.

Now nearing a century, Bardsley looked hell bent on breaking the most sixes in an innings record in the Olympics. He had already hit 6 sixes as opposed to only 4 fours.

After bringing up his century off 133 balls, Bardsley hit another six. He had now equalled the records of Gilbert Jessop of Great Britain and the late John Campbell of Argentina for having hit 7 sixes in an innings. He needed only one more to get past the legendary Australian Clem Hill, who headed the list with 8 sixes in an innings against the Mixed Team in 1904.

Australia won their third Gold medal for cricket, and their first since 1904. Great Britain were forced to settle for Silver this time after winning Gold in consecutive Olympic Games in 1908 and 1912. Argentina, who beat Canada by just 1 wicket in a thrilling Bronze playoff won their first medal for cricket in the form of Bronze.

Warren Bardsley's match-winning century won him praise from his team-mates and opponents alike. There was perhaps no greater example of a player saving his best performance for last in the Olympic Games.

Warwick-540x367.jpg

Australia's victorious captain Warwick Armstrong ended his 16-year Olympic career on a high note by bowing out with a Gold medal. Having been criticized for being considerably overweight, he went on to prove that one needn't have a Greek god-like physique in order to excel at their sport even in a tournament like the Olympics. His all-round returns of 82 runs at 82.00 and 4 wickets at 9.50, while conceding just 2.04 runs per over, helped Australia relive their former glory after two mediocre campaigns in 1908 and 1912. His overall career record after 16 matches between 1904 to 1920 read 406 runs at 40.60 and 19 wickets at 19.95.

Yes! I finally won a Gold medal. Great to see such a dominant performance against a strong team like Great Britain.

Cricket at the Olympics - Antwerp 1920

The Olympic Games are set to resume in Antwerp, Belgium, less than two years after the end of the Great War, one of the deadliest conflicts in the history of mankind. With millions of lives having been lost, governments and economies having collapsed, it is hoped the resuming of the Games in 1920 will in some way help heal the wounds caused by the war that still lie very fresh in Belgium, Europe and many parts of the world.

The Antwerp Olympisch Stadion will be used as the only venue for cricket. The Antwerp Cricket Club, which once hosted the Netherlands in 1911, was declared unfit for operation by the IOC officials and will not be used for the event. A total of 13 teams will participate in cricket. However, the list of participants does not include Belgium, the host nation, who sent over their national cricket team for the 1908 and 1912 Olympic Games. Cricket in Belgium has declined greatly since the war, with several of their prominent cricketers (including skipper Jack Raphael) killed in the war or relocating to other countries. Burma and Egypt, who impressed on their cricketing debuts in the 1912 Games will also not participate in the sport.

Three new teams in Brazil, Ceylon and Chile will make their cricketing debuts, while New Zealand makes a comeback as an independent team for the first time in 20 years. The list of participants for cricket in the 1920 Olympic Games are (in alphabetical order):

The standard cup tie or knockout format, which was used for cricket in the 1912 event, will be done so again. The best performing teams from the previous Olympics i.e Great Britain, United States and Australia will get a bye to the quarter-finals, while the rest battle it out in the first round to join them.

Summary

The 1920 Olympic Games, officially known as the Games of the VII Olympiad, were held in Antwerp, Belgium less than two years after the end of the Great War, one of the deadliest conflicts in the history of mankind. It marked the resumption of the Olympic Games after a period of eight years, with the scheduled 1916 Games in Berlin cancelled due to the outbreak of war. These Olympics were the first in which the Olympic Oath was voiced, doves released to symbolize peace, and also the first in which the Olympic Flag was flown.

The sport of cricket was on the Olympics' schedule for the sixth time, the same as the number of Olympic Games played so far. All cricket matches were played in the Antwerp Olympisch Stadion, built specifically for the 1920 Games. The cup tie or knockout format, which gained much popularity within cricketing circles when used in the 1912 Olympic Games, was retained for the event. A total of 13 nations participated in the 13-match tournament that followed. They were (in alphabetical order) Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Ceylon, Chile, Great Britain, India, Netherlands, New Zealand, South Africa, United States and the West Indies.

Interestingly, the host nation Belgium did not participate in cricket this time, after having sent over their national cricket team to the 1908 and 1912 Olympic Games. The war had severely depleted Belgium's cricketing resources, causing a number of prominent players to die while fighting to defend their nation, some others to relocate to different countries and many more to hang up their boots for good. Burma and Egypt, who provided good competition in 1912, also chose not to compete in 1920.

The three withdrawn teams were replaced by three debutants in Brazil, Ceylon and Chile; all of whom failed to make it past the first round. West Indies beat a strong New Zealand side by a narrow 9-run margin to progress to the quarter-finals. 20 years on from their debut in 1900, New Zealand were yet to register their maiden Olympic victory. Argentina and the Netherlands overcame Chile and India, while Canada and South Africa defeated Brazil and Ceylon respectively.

Great Britain, the United States and Australia were earlier given a bye to the quarter-finals for their performances in the 1912 Games where they won Gold, Silver and Bronze respectively. West Indies faced the reigning Gold medalists Great Britain in the first quarter-final, competing favorably until they ran into the prolific duo of Jack Hobbs and Patsy Hendren. Argentina and the Netherlands faced each other in the second quarter-final after progressing from the first round, with the former emerging victorious in an extremely low-scoring contest, something which was to become the theme of most matches Argentina were involved in.

The United States had lost several of their key players from their 1908 and 1912 Silver-winning campaigns to retirement, and looked a depleted side when they played arch-rivals Canada in the third quarter-final. The Canadians won by a narrow margin of 2 wickets to progress to the semi-finals, thus making it the first instance of the United States crashing out of an Olympic tournament without a medal. The fourth quarter-final involving Australia and South Africa was the most one-sided of the four, with the Australians registering a crushing 188-run victory over the team that denied them a Bronze medal in 1908.

The semi-finals which saw Great Britain take on Argentina, and Australia take on Canada were equally one-sided. Great Britain crushed their opponents by 10 wickets and Australia by 6 wickets to set up the third such clash against each other in an Olympic final. Argentina and Canada played each other for the consolation prize of a Bronze medal.

Australia continued their 100% record in Olympic finals on the back of a century from Warren Bardsley, by defeating their Ashes rivals by a comprehensive 117-run margin to claim their third Gold medal for cricket. Great Britain finished with a Silver medal for the fourth time, having been denied a hat-trick of Gold medals since they started winning them in 1908. Argentina beat Canada by 1 wicket in a thrilling low-scoring Bronze playoff to claim a Bronze medal, their first Olympic medal for cricket. Great Britain's star batsman Jack Hobbs was adjudged Player of the Tournament for scoring 191 runs at an awe-inspiring average of 95.50 from the 3 matches he played.

Most of the members of this team were the ones who whitewashed England in the 1920-21 Ashes. Now i'm even less surprised by our victory.

One notable absentee is the host nation France, who participated in the sport of cricket the last time the Olympics were hosted in Paris in 1900. Like Belgium before them in the previous edition of the Games, France have also drifted out of the sport since the Great War, having last played an international match in 1910.

The standard cup tie or knockout format which was used for the previous two editions of the Olympics in 1912 and 1920, has been retained. The only change this time being that every participating nation will have to play the first round of the competition, with none getting direct byes to the quarter-finals. The cricket matches will be played across two venues - Stade Olympique de Colombes, the main stadium for the 1924 Games; and Vélodrome de Vincennes, the stadium which hosted cricket matches during the 1900 Games.

Player rarities

In each squad, players have been marked with these icons to give you a fair idea of their playing skills and overall usefulness to your team.

:purpo: - Legend. Used for the players that are undoubtedly the best of the lot.
:goldo: - Gold. Used for players with a high level of consistency and ability to deliver during key moments.
:redo: - Ruby. Used for players that are extremely talented and can play in a way no one else can replicate.
:slvo: - Silver. Used for players that aren't as talented as their Gold/Ruby/Legend contemporaries, but still capable of holding their own against the best in business.
:blueo: - Sapphire/Crystal. Used for players that are halfway between Bronze and Silver. They are more likely to put in good performances than players from the Bronze category.
:bro: - Bronze. Used for players that are inexperienced or with a lower skill set compared to those from a higher category. They could either put in good performances or fail miserably.

We played really well in the previous season. Our captain is now the legend player but will surely miss him from the next season. Hope he plays well and gets a good send-off.
