My default gateway is withing the range of those ip addresses (its also the same as the address for my router). Is there anything i can do about that?

Are you checking the gateway for the router/modem or for your computer?

The gateway for your computer is the router IP.

The gateway for the router is your service providers IP.

The router's gateway (not your computer's gateway) should not be a private IP, since the router is connected to the internet.
