I'd now love to debate on which is the best dth service currently. Now ADTV has 4 HD channels- NGC HD, ESPN/Star Cricket HD, Discovery HD World and Movies Now HD

Call me sour grapes but I am not bothered to watch Set Max HD anyway. Too bored of IPL that I don't even watch full match of my home team.

Direct-to-home: Internet movies coming soon

India?s third-largest direct-to-home (DTH) operator Tata Sky is in the final stages of negotiations to launch a Netflix-like service in India.

US -based Netflix is the world?s leading internet subscription service, which enables members watch unlimited movies and TV shows for a monthly fee of $8.0 (around Rs 355). Movies and serials are streamed to users over the Net and can be viewed on computer, tablet PC and television.

India is set to become the country with highest number of DTH connections in the world by 2012, edging past the US, according to a study by research firm Media Partners Asia.

?An announcement about the launch of a Netflix-like service on Tata Sky will be made in the next two-three months,? said a source close to the deal. ?The talks are in advanced stages and both parties are very close to sealing the deal.?

?The Tata Sky+ HD set-top box has already got USB and ethernet ports. Users can connect to the Internet using the ethernet port,? said Vikram Mehra, CMO, Tata Sky. ?For every port we add on the set-top box, our costs go up. We already give our subscribers a hefty subsidy on set-top boxes. We have to make these investments bring back some money to us.?

Tata Sky already has a movie-on-demand service called Showcase using which customers can watch a movie at certain set timings by paying a pre-decided amount. ?A Netflix-like service enables viewers to choose movies and shows from a huge catalogue and the selected movie is then delivered over the Internet and is stored on the set-top box. You can view it as many times as you want and whenever you want,? Mehra said, refusing to comment on the new service that will be launched soon.

The service, however, will work only on Tata Sky set-top boxes that have the ethernet port.

Dish TV is the market leader in the DTH segment with 9 million subscribers, followed by Sun TV with 6.4 million users. Tata Sky comes in at No. 3 with over 6 million subscribers.

You would need 2mbps unlimited internet for this service to work well. Has 2mbps unlimited become common now in India?

I have Tata Sky and Tata Sky HD, we've got both for TVs in different rooms. :P The only thing that sucks about the HD service is that you can't transfer the recorded shows on to PC. Unlike Sky's UK counterpart. Sucks on me though, I have 21% of free space for recording.

That's the only drawback in Tata sky HD, and there were about 5-6 HD channels earlier and they're adding new channels later this year. They're stuck at 1080i and a further push to 1080p, in spite of having little difference can
get some benefits.

Although 2mbps speed has reached India but not everywhere. As far as my knowledge tata sky is going to provide an additional wire for this and they will be acting as ISP.

@KBC - Tata Sky has locked the hard disk. If you want you can unscrew the tata sky box and you will find a hard disk inside it which you can unplug from tata sky and connect it to your pc/laptop.

It will void your warrenty though.

Well, it's patented and i'm assuming any alteration would backfire, probably erase the HDD. So that sucks. xD Sky are adding new channels this month, Neo Cricket HD is added today. Good. There are Epic fail moments too, cos there are no advertisements and you can hear the commentators doing "test 1234" 10 times between the overs. xD Funny.

Is that proof enough for you . Although both channels are event based at the moment. They come on air during the match time and then go off again.

Dude I have a tata sky HD too

I know Neo Cricket HD is available but was not sure about Ten Cricket HD like I know it was available for West Indies series, but SAF VS AUS series I am not sure
