I think we need to be fair in our expectations from our keepers. The primary reason why keepers have been shunted around is cause of the influence of MSD. Prior to MSD, we had Mongia, who wasn't that great with the bat (sorta Healy like). The likes of Saba Karim, Dighe, Dasgupta,Dahiya, Ratra were in the same mould. I'd rate Dighe to be far better tbh.

After Dhoni, the narrative changed and eveyrone expected the wicket keeper to be a strong batsman. This was the primary reason why Saha was kicked out. Fair to note that DK, Saha were accomplished batsmen and could contribute with those nifty 50s.

If keeping is what we are after, then we shouldn't expect Jurel to come in and save us every now and then. An avg of 30-ish is decent for a person of his standing, provided that the top order can hold fort. For a team in transition, I do expect Jurel to be in and out of the side- until they fix their KLR fascination, that is.

I don’t expect Rahul to be the regular keeper in India. They might go back to him in overseas conditions if Jurel is a disappointment with the bat but I expect him to be good.

I’ve long wanted Pant to play as a specialist batter even before his accident because he was our best test batter for a while. His style of batting also works much better with established batters rather than tail-enders.

They’ll still have the temptation to get Pant keeping as soon as possible due to the versatility that offers in team selection.

It appears that at least in limited overs format he will don that role more often (sort of like what Dravid did in the Ganguly era). Test cricket, yes, it would make sense to play him as specialist batsman.

It makes sense in ODIs, he’s one of the most dynamic and adaptable middle order batters around. Clangers in that format aren’t scrutinised as much and his DRS calls are quite excellent.

I'd still prefer for him to play as a pure batsman. The main reason KL kept was due to the balance of the side. I also thought Jagadeeshan had a chance, but he was overlooked by the selection committee despite decent track record.

That does track with how India have approached cricket in general over the last year. Just wait for things to fall in line instead of going out for it
Come to think of it, I feel bowlers in the Kohli-Shastri era relied of creating chances whereas the Dravid era bowling has been the opposite. That's one thing I dearly miss.

I’m not sure if it was a Shastri thing or Kohli being a good man motivator. The absence of Bharat Arun is also contributing here.

For me he is still the best number 3 batsman in 20 20 for india and this will be a massive let down as a indian cricket fan if they cant even pick him in the 15 man world cup squad.
