the australian A side have done worryingly well if you're a south african fan.

and phil hughes scored 5 proving that this match can be taken as a decent indicator of how the players are going perform in a test match scenario.

bahahahaha You forget that two of those useless batsman made each a 100 as SA scored 236 for 2 to win by 8 wickets

That's because they were faced with useless bowlers like Johnson and others. My point was that against good bowling squads, both SAF and Aus will fail in batting, just like India and England will. There's no team in the world that are good against quality swing bowling.

Very much looking forward to Friday!

Who thinks Australia will go with 4 quicks? I think we will but I hope we don't.

I just wanna know what the hell is going on with the fitness team in the Australian camp? Why are people being injured? I mean practically all the bowlers have been injured and probably all the batsman as well. The only person not to have been injured in the past few years was Cowan and i'm not sure that he was injury free.

----------

Also very nice to see Doolan, Quiney, Maxweel and Paine getting runs. Also why isn't Paine the keeper for Aus?

Watson hurt in Shield clash | Cricket | Fox Sports

Oh boy carnage in the lead up to the test. Interesting times if both him and Ponting are ruled out.

Surely you mean disastrous times my friend. No-one in domestic cricket is batting well enough, to inspire confidence that they can come in and score runs vs that attack if those two are out.

Bailey & Hughes would be the front runners to come in as things stand however.

bit harsh on Doolan, he scores 3 tons in a month, South Africa couldnt dismiss him for 160 odd, isnt old, in super form, if thats not standing out then i dont know what is.

Doolan brings up the 100, he is starting to make a name for himself this season. Just a shame this isn't a proper FC match so that it counts towards his record.
Why wouldn't it? 11 a side and 3 days long is FC. First class cricket and even a lot of early Tests in England used to be 3 days.

Yes i'm aware of what Doolan is doing. Admittedly i've never seen him bat, but this is just a month of good batting, after being totally obscure. Are we really ready to consider this bloke for a test match vs this s africa attack, if the worse case scenario occurs & Ponting & Watson are ruled out?

Plus i always takes performances in these unofficial first class matches with a heavy pinch of salt. The intensity of the S African quick will just be the same in the test match.

One of many examples I can recall, is when Australia toured the west indies in 2003, Carlton Baugh smoked a big hundred before the 1st test in Guyana. Then when main wicket-keeper ridley jacobs got injured and Baugh played in the real tests, he was awful & we know where his career is now.

Also, who's the Bowling Coach for Australia. The fact that mcdermott left may have an effect on the bowlers who may not swing the ball this time 'round.

New bowling coach is Alastair de Winter - former Tasmanian player.

Very much looking forward to Friday!

With Watson not being able to bowl (if he plays at all), I think there's now a better chance of 4 quicks. To me 4 quicks + Watson would have been stupid - you don't see SA considering 4 quicks + Kallis. But now Clarke would be the next best bowler out of the batsmen, so he could play as the spinner and bowl 10 quicks overs every day. Otherwise, McDonald I suppose would be the all-rounder replacement option for Watson - or perhaps if they went outside the box a bit, maybe Maxwell or Steve Smith. Both made runs for Aus A, and 4 quicks plus a spinning all-rounder isn't the worst idea. Or of course, just pick the best 6 batters, 3 quicks and Lyon and don't worry about part time/all-rounder stuff.

To cover for Ponting, yeah I guess Doolan's in the mix...but Rob Quiney has to be the man right? He and Cowan have been the leading run scorers over the last 2 seasons. Quiney also made runs in the Aus A game. He'd get first shot as Ponting's cover in my mind. Downside for him is that he's a leftie, I'm guessing they'd prefer to not have all lefties in the top 3.

Finally a thought on Watson. What kind of message would it send to Watson if they won't pick him as a specialist batsman?? If the selectors don't think he's good enough to play without his bowling, I would question his place and it would be a serious kick in the nuts to Watto.

Would also like to nominate John Hastings as a man who could get a look at some point this summer. Very tidy, and would do well in a 4 quick attack holding up one end. Can also bat which may be helpful if McDonald/Maxwell get picked as an all-rounder, weakening that top 7.

If we had a more stable lineup Maxwell would be a very good option. Isn't much on the batting front if both Watson and Ponting are out, just the usual suspects that got dropped.

Quiney called up, good luck to him but really feels like a stop gap measure with no real future.
