Your Cricket Spin Bowling thread

Thanks for providing us with those animations. When I first started spinning I was confused about which way I was actually spinning it, but I managed to clear that up.

Got a question, how come the Slow Left Arm turns so much? :D

Tommorrow I am gonna pratice on my lawn and see if I can get some turn and for the first time practice pitching.

Lol, it does spin a little too much as ive never known a slow left armer to get much turn to be honest.

A Left Armers main weapon to right handers is going over the wicket and then suprising the batsmen with rapid dip of the ball and then unexpected bounce, and then the odd one which moves miles from the bat :D

Turn is not the be all and end all of spin bowling, because I suppose massive turn but being all over the place (say 50/50 chance of a wide) is not good. There are many subtler components of spin bowling like dip (ball pitches shorter than the batsman expects, and bounces higher - caused by overspin or topspin), drift (caused by sidespin on the ball, drifts the opposite way, so a legspinner would drift off to the right and turn the other way), and bounce.
Having said that, if you're not turning it you can't really call it spin...

Why not Embi? Spinning the ball doesn't mean it has to go sideways. A ball can spin fowards or backwards without going sideways. True you'd be a pretty limited spin bowler if you could only bowl a topspinner, but a spin bowler you'd still be.

For me good flight and dip are the keys to being a spinner. Obviously turning the ball varying degress is going to make you a better spinner, but with just flight and dip you'd get more wickets than just massive spin.

My bad, I tried to include backspin and overspin in my definition of a spin bowler.
However, I don't think if your stock ball was a topspinner, you would be a very successful bowler. Having said that the overspinner is a powerful weapon.

Turning the ball is what a spinner should do best, so im gunna disagree with you, but ill also agree on some things

As a left armer myself i find it really difficult at the start of a season to get my spin going so like you guys said before i resort to trying to baffle a batsmen with subtle dip and then bounce, but once i get the spin going after 10 overs or so in a game i find that spin rarely can not be used. (except for the straighter ball but then that spins a fraction to straighten up)

Slow Left Armers are perfect to watch to see how to spin a ball aswell as being able to have massive dip and bounce. Watch Vettori or Panesar they dont spin the ball a great deal, but watch the ball now and again and it turns like Warne would be proud of. This is because SLA have differnt armery to baffle batsmen. Leg spinners have a wide range of deliverys which will all do differnt things to the ball, thanks to Mr. New ball per year Warne.

So SLA are a bit limited, but as any good spinner will tell you variation is the key. Spin it a mile everyball and the batsmen will just pick it out and despatch it, dont turn it enough and its a case of "see you later."

I can easily say for a left armer like myself that offspin or Slow Left Arm bowling is the easiest as it doesnt involve much wrist action and its all in the fingers. I am lucky enough to be able to use both SLA and Chinaman(Left Arm Leg Spin) in my game and if its not going right i usually resort to Off spin as to the right hander over the wicket you can make them uncomfortable.

Sorry for aiming at Left arm stuff, but im left handed so its easier for me to talk about it :D

I hate to agree with tubby over there, but Left-Arm spin is definately more fun to bowl. You have more angles, can rip the ball more, and the batsmen often have no clue!

Who you calling Tubby? :p

Scroll up and look at the animations JikJak made. They should help you.

You want a technique? Which type of spin (slow left arm (offspin), left arm chinaman (legspin), right arm offspin, right arm legspin) do you want to know about? Please be a little bit more precise..

I've got my legspin back!
Tried it with the tape ball, was ripping it with a nice high are action!! I just used my offie's action, changed to a legbreak grip, and my action changed a bit, but what spin! :)

Hmmm.....After a long layout, especially after i had shoulder surgery, i was given targets by my coach, and they were simply

1. Dont try to spin the ball, try to aim it, get your accuracy back!

2. Work up a bit of speed, try to turn your arm over quicker.

3. Try to add SLOW spin, nothing which puts too much pressure on the shoulder.

4. Now go all out and do it together, and get some rythem.

After about 3 weeks back in training my game was back although due to the nature of my injury, ive not been able to impliment the quicker the same since :crying

And i also lost a bit of spin, but with that ive learnt about dipping the ball and bouncing it :D Also flighting the ball, and trying not to get smacked :D
