SOUTH AFRICA MAKE SLOW START TO WORLD CUP

South Africa have set Scotland 239 to win, in both teams' opening match of the 2011 World Cup. Graeme Smith was out for 1 in the first ball of the second over and, soon after, Jacques Kallis was bowled by Johann Nel, putting the South Africans at 9/2.

Kallis was soundly beaten by Nel's yorker.

De Villiers was beaten by Nel soon after, but Craig Knox and Nic van Woerkom came to the crease. The two 29-year olds put on 116 for the fourth wicket, batting for almost half the innings, before Knox edged a catch to backward point. Van woerkom reached his century just before getting out, but Ashwell Prince then slowed the run rate, with his 9 ball 2. Warryn Hauptfleisch and Rory Kleinveldt combined well at the death, putting on an unbeaten 28 for the last wicket off 4.3 overs.

John Blain had figures of 10-2-33-2

Gavin Hamilton bowled 10 wicketless overs for 45 runs. But will he be needed with the bat?

SCOTLAND STUN SOUTH AFRICA!

The minnows of Scotland have beaten South Africa in an amazing run chase at Galle today in Group A of the 2011 World Cup!

The Scots started in an attacking mood, needing 239 to win. The opening over of the innings was bowled by Ugasen Govender and opener Jim Oxton went postal on him, scoring four consecutive fours, and 19 runs were scored on that over. Oxton went soon after, for 19 off 9 balls. Fellow opener Fraser Watts was preparing in his mind to be the anchor man of the innings, so he nudged and nurdled, while at the other end a stream of batsmen went at almost a run a ball - Watson 36 off 39, Poonia 16 off 16, McCallum 8 off 18. However, this ended as Ross Lyons came to the crease with the score at 140 for 3.

Ryan Watson leaves the crease, bowled by Zondeki.

Lyons took the attack to South Africa, and managed to guide Scotland home, shocking the South African seamers with his aggression, as he scored his first List-A and ODI half-century, and as he brought the team home with a crashing boundary of Jacques Kallis, he'd managed to score 74 off 70 balls and leave South Africa dangling over the edge of the cliff, and Scotland with a real chance of qualifying.

At the Galle International Stadium

South Africa 238 for 6 - 50 overs
Nicholas van Woerkom 103
John Blain 2/33

Scotland 241 for 4 - 47.4 overs
Fraser Watts 76*
Rory Kleinveldt 2/33

Man of the Match: Nicholas van Woerkom

Rahul Dravid prepares for his fourth world cup, and his second as the captain.

Rahul Dravid's interview in preperation for his team's first World Cup match with Channel Nine anchorman Mark Nicholas:

MN: Well, Rahul, the moment that Indian cricket has been looking forward to for a long, long time is finally here, the 2011 World Cup. Hosted by the four subcontinental countries - how important is it for the Indian people that you do well in this trophy?

RD: I think that the events of 15 years ago, the 1996 World Cup - I only managed to get into the Indian team after that competition - the scenes that we saw then as India lost to Sri Lanka at Eden Gardens, that shows how much cricket and an Asian World Cup means to the Indian nation.

MN: Your first match is against Namibia at Multan, will you be viewing that match as a glorified practice for your match against Pakistan?

RD: I think that South Africa's showing against Scotland proves that there are no easy matches in the World Cup, if we aren't in top gear against the Namibians, then we are running the risk of being dumped out of the World Cup at the group stage. It is a good chance to get into form, yes, but winning has to be the top priority.

MN: What's the reasoning behind the team balance that you've gone with for the match?

RD: Well some players are always going to be on the teamsheet, Virru [Sehwag], the Captain, Sach, Tahir [Ghandi], Munaf [Patel] and Inesh [Raul], who have just shown such amazing form in ODIs that they have to play. Cole Muzumdar has shown great promise this season, his temperment at the top of the order has been outstanding, and he's a natural opening batsman. Number Six over the past year has fallen to Hemang Badani, a player who I feel has the talent to be the best "finishers" in the world. Srivastava keeps, and then we have the two spinners, Chawla and Acharya. It's such a spinners' pitch out in Multan that playing two specialist players + ten overs of parttime spin if we don't choose Cole [Muzumdar] to bowl is the best choice. We feel that this is the best teams for the conditions.

MN: OK, thank you Rahul, good luck in the match against Namibia, and in the World Cup.

The two teams in today's game between India and Namibia, along with their ODI averages.

Rahul Dravid called tails at the toss and lost. Opposing captain Louis Burger elected to bat first.

It will be a tough task for Namibia, with Munaf Patel, Inesh Raul, Mudhusudan Acharya and Piyush Chawla on top form...

Munaf Patel is in the form of his life.

Number Three batsman and all-rounder Gerrie Snyman will be important to the Namibian effort.

NAMIBIA 95/6 [20]

Namibia find themselves on the back foot in this Group B clash. The early damage was done by Munaf, removing opening batsman Prinsloo, but his opening bowling partner Inesh Raul kept bowling, delivering his ten allocated overs straight through, taking three wickets for 43 runs. Madhusudan Acharya bowled well also, taking two wickets in his fifth over. With Piyush Chawla the other front-line bowler, Rahul Dravid now has a choice to make: does he bowl Chawla, Acharya and Patel through, and hope that they bowl Namibia out, or does he go to his part-time bowlers and then bring his front-line bowlers back later, to avoid the possibility of a slog in the final overs off Sehwag, Tendulkar or Badani.

L Burger 29 (36 balls) (4 x 4s)

NAMIBIA 163 [39.2]

Namibia have been bowled out cheaply by the Indian bowlers, who after a short misfire, pushed through to dismiss the African team for 163 runs.

76713.jpg

Piyush Chawla bowls one of his ripping leg-breaks. Chawla failed to take a wicket, but only conceded 36 runs from his 10 overs.

However, the Namibian lower order did a good job, with lots of the players chipping in, but Munaf Patel came back and bowled his final 5 overs, taking three more wickets with his express pace.

David Botha cracks the boundary in his score of 18.

Munaf Patel and Rahul Dravid celebrate the final wicket of the innings.

Namibia 163 all out --- 39.2 overs
Andries Burger 32 (30 balls) (6 x 4s)
Louis Burger 29 (36 balls) (4 x 4s)
Nicolaas Scholtz 15* (11 balls) (3 x 4s)

Inesh Raul 10-0-43-3
Munaf Patel 9.2-0-44-4
Madhusudan Acharya 10-0-38-3
Piyush Chawla 10-1-36-0

India require 164 runs to win at 3.3 runs per over.
