You didn't watch any of the matches did you? His knock against Bangladesh may have come against a weak attack but chasing 296 on any pitch is difficult. The dew may have made it easier but the intense mental battle still existed and he certainly did not wilt.

At this point, Umar Akmal has the edge because he has test match experience and has shown that he can score runs in the toughest format of the game. That said, I do think Virat Kohli has a much cooler head on his shoulders and much better temperament than Umar Akmal. Umar has all the talent in the world but sometimes he just gets carried away and doesn't know when to stop. Sure, he's good, but he needs to realize that nobody is good enough to put every single ball to the boundary.

Kohli on the other hand has come a long way from the brash, egocentric player he was just 2-3 years ago. In IPL 1, Ray Jennings said something along of the lines of Kohli having a lot of talent but being too full of himself. Since then, Kohli himself has admitted that he had a slight attitude problem and has fixed it which coincidentally has worked out very well for him in the recent past.

Eoin Morgan has show his ability in ODIs but his first class record suggests that he can't transfer that ability into the longer format of the game. At the moment, he's a bit of an ODI specialist.

I will agree with you on the fact that yes 294 is difficult on any pitch. He is a definite match winner and a very good batsmen expect him to very good for the future. However, I just think that those 2 matches against Sri Lanka are really disappointing he should have done something better. Plus, no offense to any Bangladesh's player but there bowling attack is generally weak.

This is why I would say that Kohli can be a great batsmen but at the same time he may have that inconsistency of many other middle order batsmen like half the Pakistan team.

Haven't seen much of Kohli, but between Umar and Morgan, I'd have to say Umar is the better player.

If it wasn't for him playing for Pakistan, he'd probably be a lot better. Not anything against Pakistan, but with their inconsistent batting line up, he has had too much pressure put on him to perform.

this pressure can actually polish his talent.

Bit hard to judge really since two haven't played the ultimate form of cricket. So you would have to go for Akmal by default. Akmal has the goods to be on top of the other two when they do play Test cricket though, I've been impressed with the way he plays reverse swing and his attacking nature.

I would rather compare Hughes, Barath and Akmal. All 3 of them have played tests, scored test centuries and are around 20.

If Umar matures as a player, and becomes more responsible I reckon he'll go far.

Umar is really talented fella. The way he played in NZ was fantastic for a youngster. When playing the likes of Shane Bond & Dan Vettori, you need to be at the top of your game. Having said that, he still has some distance to cover if he wants to cement his spot, a bit like Virat has.

Umar really hasn't got much competition. Virat has plenty. Both are under pressure, but in different ways. Umar is under pressure as the third best batsman in the side while Virat has to prove he is better than Raina and the other fringe players and that he has more to offer than Ravindra Jadeja.

Spot on Shravi!

Umar Akmal stands ahead due to most of the reasons mentioned in the thread. Kohli seems to be a bright talent, but as a batsman he will have to prove himself in foreign conditions to fully showcase his talent and temperament.

Speaking of temperament, that is one thing the younger Akmal can improve on. He is young and all that crap comes in mind, but the fact was he could have taken Pakistan home in the 2nd Test only to play a lose shot, indicates a point where he needs to improve. Kohli, from what I have seen recently doesnt easily give his wicket away. And I think he is overrated to an extent

Wait that makes no sense. How isn't Umar under pressure he is 19 and he could be out of the side any minute, everyone knows the geniousness of the Pakistan Selectors. You never know what could happen. Plus, his brother jus got kicked out of the test team so he should be feeling a little bit of pressure don't you think.
